I saw this on television last night and just had to share it. Granted, it's not an RL pet of mine, but he belongs to someone. It's nice to see a cute ad for adopting shelter pets instead of the usual sad/depressing ones:

Oh man. I actually saw a similar ad recently. I mean, one that was like "adopting pets is super cool!" and not a sad depressing video. My only regret is that I can't remember it now. :(

I like this new shift in focus, though. It makes me feel super cool for adopting, too!

As for that first video... I was that cat when I brought Spunkie home and was, like, anxiously waiting for him to use the litter box just so I knew he wasn't constipated with stress or anything. JUST POOP ALREADY!

I completely approve of these, I have a shelter dog myself and she is the best possible pooch for my family, although she's old, lazy and a bit chunky. But for a not-terribly-active household with two small kids, I couldn't ask for a better, kinder, more patient doggie. While I worked at the shelter, I got to know some of the most amazing little personalities, and I'm always SO terribly glad to see adoption promoted in an upbeat way. Personally, I cannot justify purchasing a breed dog or cat from a breeder while this vast issue with stray, homeless animals continues.

Dottie also approves.

Edit: Also wanted to add, that I do not in any way whatsoever judge people who DO buy a breed from a breeder, provided that the breeder is a responsible person with the welfare and health of their breed at the forefront of their mind! My family owned breed dogs in the past as well, and I wouldn't trade a single moment away, even though now I try to gravitate towards shelter dogs, at least when I am planning a dog in a country that has a serious issue with it, such as Croatia. In Finland I would likely get a cat from the shelter and a dog from a responsible breeder. Just wanted to make it clear that the most important thing of all is the health of the animal and the bond they have with their human, not where you got them!

Thank you for that! I am completely on the side of shelters; I adore them, and we've gotten some of our most beloved animals from them. But we've gotten two of our golden retrievers from breeders who were wonderful. Just gotta make sure the breeder is focusing on the right things. Our golden came from a breeder that focused on keeping cancer out of her dogs, it was wonderful.

Oh absolutely, I am very much in favour of breeders who are focusing on improving the health of their breed and who dare to make a difference! Those who truly breed for the love of the animal, and not for the money. When I lived in the UK, I became very acutely aware of the multitude of problems that decades of inbreeding have caused in some breeds there (most of the popular ones anyway), and I was immensely impressed by those who dared to stand against years of "this is the way it's always been done" and pressure from their breed clubs to bring the issues to light.

On a side note, I remember seeing pictures of your Goldie(s), and I recall a lot of fluff and cuteness. :P
