Signature sizes

Some relevant points from the signature guidelines, posted by Mania:
  • Images used in signatures should be no larger than 800 pixels wide and 300 pixels high. (These guidelines were chosen to try to give members some flexibility in their signatures. I'd really rather not see every post end with an 800x300 image.)
  • Signature images shouldn't be any larger than 300KB in file size.
I've noticed people creeping over this limit more and more, and have started receiving some concerns about it, especially animated images.

If your image is over 300 px already, please shrink it. I really didn't want to have to enforce this, but since people are taking more and more liberties, it seems I'm going to have to. Also, if your signature will work well in a size lower than 300 px high, then please consider making it smaller. When 90% of the page is taken up with signatures and 10% is peoples' one-line posts it becomes a bit silly.

It would be nice if people followed the rules and stuck to the 800x300 sig size. ;) It does get to be a little irritating to try and load a bunch of sigs all at once, especially for one line posts, as Wain said, and especially if you're on a computer that doesn't handle it well. Some of mine are sitting right at the limits and I'm going to go make them smaller to make it a little easier on the site and everyone else.

It would also be nice if people remembered that we also have a limit of one image per signature on the site.

Thank you Wain for posting this. :)

Mine doesn't go over the height and width size... but oh my god 998KB
I guess I'm gonna be hunting for something else to put in my signature, eek.

Found some. Now it's just a matter of choosing between the ones I have.

Ash, you could easily lop off the top and bottom where there is nothing :3 That would help with the size. I'd even go so far as to crop all the way to the point of the ears and the bottom of the paws. It'd look great too ;D

It would definitely be nice if people checked the rules before making their sigs so big. I always politely PM people when I check their dimensions and see it's waaaay too high.

I feel like images are still pretty big :x
Maybe people are just ignoring these announcements? XD

Most of the sigs around here are 800x300. :) That is a pretty large size and more than fair, imo, for a sig, especially since a lot of sites I've seen keep them on the way smaller side.

Depends. Have you checked their sig sizes? Most that 'look' big tend to follow it. 300 in height and 800 in width. It's a lot bigger than you might think. Check it out in paint or something to get an idea.

I personally don't want the size the change cause I think it's a good size. Any smaller makes the quality look cruddy.

I don't know how it works in other browsers, but in Firefox (and presumably others) you can right click on any image on a page and select "View Image info". That will give you the size of the image in a matter of seconds :)

Yup. I meant the MS Paint thing so people can see just what a 300 x 800 image looks like in size at max

Chrome is a bit more annoying. I've found if you click Inspect Elements, it'll sometimes show up.
