Sargeras' mission from the get-go was to destroy Azeroth so that she couldn't be corrupted by the Void Lords. When the Well of Eternity was destroyed, Sargeras had a vision of Azeroth slumbering within the planet. A single eye opened up and looked at him. His mission then changed to not killing her, but having her join him.
That is why Sargeras is not initially seen attacking Azeroth. He may have been preparing to corrupt her or waking her up. But when he was being imprisoned, he stabbed her. His hope was that this would kill her so that the Void Lords couldn't get to her.

Also - We haven't even got this patch yet in the EU, but somehow he's already been defeated? I'm very impressed, that's all I'm gonna say.

Normal is always downed very quickly by good raiding guilds. Heroic may take a bit longer for some, but the Mythic guilds will usually clear that one rather quickly. Mythic is the one that'll take days or weeks to clear.
