Vindicaar: same-faction attacking?

A guild member asked me, frantically, today how he was being attacked by a fellow Horde player while walking on the Vindicaar (he was at the bottom part, on his way to the portal to Dalaran).
He says he was walking to the portal when suddenly he was attacked from behind (lost 25% of his health), and when he turned all he could see were Horde players. He did rush to the portal however, since he was worried about getting killed (he says he was unable to attack back since he couldn't figure out where the attack came from).
Anyone have any ideas about what could have happened?

Hackers normally. Not unheard of for someone hacking to attack when they can't be attacked, if your friend had looked at his combat log they would know the name of the attacker and could make a report after taking pics. Only other thing I could think of is the pandaland item that makes you attack-able to everyone, but your friend would see a red see-through yak person with a red name.

Is he certain it was a Horde player? The fact he looked to see who was about makes it sound like he wasn't sure who did the attacking. It could have been an opposing faction rogue, couldn't it?

That wouldn't matter he was in the Vindicaar, a sanct zone.

he said all he saw were people with blue name tags, no red ones at all.

Well then I would say hacker and he should have gotten a pic of his combat log.

AH, well, he's too new to the game, he wouldn't have thought of doing that.
He only let me know hours after it happened.
