Warcraft Pets are reporting that at least two of the minipets you can buy with currency from the new Deadmines pet dungeon currently come in multiple breeds (Foe Reaper and Tricorne). This can be a concern because the pets cannot be caged or removed, so you're permanently stuck with the one you obtain even if it's a substandard breed.

Hopefully they'll fix the pets so they only come in one breed. They've done this before in similar situations. The problem is that there's a risk they won't hotfix existing pets, thus permanently lumping early collectors with substandard breeds. I can say this is a realistic worry because they've done it before: the Brilliant Kaliri (unique) from the pet collection achievement reward originally came in multiple breeds too, and when they hotfixed it to a single breed they very consciously left existing/early collectors with the breeds they already had, meaning some players were permanently stuck with substandard battle pets. Players who worked the hardest at their collections ended up disadvantaged for it, though it was only one pet out of many hundreds.

So if you're buying Deadmines pets there is a risk of this. Maybe it won't work out that way, but personally I won't be buying those pets until I know what they intend. But if you're not concerned about breeds then go right ahead :)

This may be a stupid question ... and I aplogize if it is but I have to ask ... what makes a breed more preferrable than the others? Is it based on the pet type like Beast, Humanoid, Mechanical, etc.?

I've read through WarcraftPet's site so I kinda understand the basics but I've always just gone with whatever rare quality pet happen to cross my path.

Breeds are mostly important when it comes to more competitive battling. Every companion pet has a hidden 'breed' which determines which of its stats (health/power/speed) are stronger (there are addons which reveal these breeds, otherwise they're not even displayed really in the game). Some have high health and low damage, for example, some are more evenly distributed. That's a very simplified way of explaining it, but if you're just a casual collector it probably won't matter too much. Specific breeds can be useful when it comes to going up against tough fights though and you want to min/max their potential essentially.

In this instance, it would be disappointing to get a version of one of these special Deadmines pets that had crappy stats that are determined by a roll of the dice if you wanted to use them in battles.

Thanks for the reply Veph.

I get the differences between each breed but I'm not 100% sure how to go about min/max. For instance, let's say I wanted to get into PvP Pet Battles and wanted to create the best possible team for the job. Is it pretty much a luck of the draw if your breed fares better than your opponents?

I'm a casual collector so it really doesn't matter I suppose. I was just curious.

The reason the breed matters (for min/maxers) is because some pets have abilities that benefit more from certain stats than others.

Examples:
- Rabbits have Dodge, 100% chance of dodging an attack for 1 turn. But a rabbit with higher speed than the opponent gets a dodge that effectively lasts 2 turns, so it's a huge benefit.
- Many dragon whelps have Tail Sweep, which hits for extra damage if the pet attacks last. So speed is not beneficial if you're using that ability and you would actually want as little speed as possible. In that case power is usually preferred, since it makes the hits even stronger.

Yes I was the one that started the "my Foe Reaper is stuck with a breed I don't want" - and it's not a matter of thinking that particular pet is going to be something useful in the future, it's just the fact that a player cannot do anything to change it, even if it's simply releasing it to try for the breed you do want.

And yes I'm going to be holding on to my Deadmines currency for now, in case they come up with some sort of fix in the upcoming weeks that isn't retroactive.

Update: As it currently stands you CAN release the Foe Reaper (and maybe Tricorne, unable to test as I don't have it) if you have more than one in your journal. The option for releasing it is no longer showing now that I'm down to one again. At least I finally got the breed I wanted, even if it took 3 weeks!
