At least, for BM hunters they did. Pre-patch, their defensive ability had a 42 second cooldown thanks to Exotic Beasts. Now it's 1 minute.

The reason for the cooldown nerf was to limit pet CC, so it's probably just an unintended side effect. Pet buffs, DPS abilities and Spirit Mend all has their cooldowns reduced to compensate, so I don't see why purely defensive abilities should be left out.

My poor beetle is not quite as tough as he used to be :( . I'm wondering if a tenacity-specced carrion bird would be a better option for heroic scenarios.

Not so much a nerf to them as it was a nerf to the Exotic Beasts thing. :/

A terrible idea, because it affected EVERYTHING tied to that spell, not just CC-type stuff.

If they wanted to tweak pet CC, why didn't they just adjust the spells individually instead?

Because they wanted to balance both. They also tweaked the individual stun cds.
