Which families most need additional or updated looks?

Unread post by Wain »

What would you most like to see? Feel free to post on this thread your ideas for new looks for existing families, or just why you feel a particular family needs more love.

You can post ideas for new families on the other poll thread.

I've restricted it to 5 votes maximum so people are forced to make some hard choices. But you may change your votes at any time.

If I had to pick just one my vote would be for a new hi-rez dire bear looking model that has some nice color shading to it for bear skin taming options.

Each family has gotten a nice amount of attention with additions and updated looks... or never looked bad to begin with (like the outland basilisks). But the poor bears, hyenas, wind serpents and warpstalkers... I'd love to see an updated model and it's a shame we didn't get the latter two in WoD as they're natives of draenor.

Can I vote for Bears 5 times? Also Spirit Beasts because it's been a while since we had truly unique ones like Loque.

I chose hyenas and dogs, hyenas because I miss the old stance, and dogs because I'd like to see some other RL breeds rather than just a mastiff.

Bears, first and foremost because not only is the model so outdated, but it's...so anatomically incorrect...I love bears, but the wow model...needs help!

Hyena's, I would love to see the models updated!! Of course I might be a bit biased there...but still, they have needed a LOT of adjustment since the last time Blizzard "broke" their necks.

Spirit beasts, I know we have a few models in the family, however, most are nothing more then "recolors" of existing families. There was a LOT of potential for the family with the first spirit beast being a completely new and never before seen model, something completely unique...and then they dropped the ball and went with recolors...

Foxes, I love foxes, I love this family, but it has a very limited selection. It would be awesome to see foxes with more unique coat patterns. Spice up that mono pelt with some patterns!

Warp Stalkers, Wonderful model, but so much wasted potential with the color combinations. Come on blizz, get bold and go wild with the color combos!!!

But any family that has 6 or less colors to choose from...needs some attention. I get that blizzard loves cat's and wolves...but come on, there ARE other families that need love to Blizzard...

Bears are my first pick. They're such a staple animal and I'm honestly amazed we have not seen any new models for their family since Vanilla.

Core hounds could certainly do with some more variety, but mostly I'd like to request the use of the lovely updated model we had for the anniversary event. It could easily replace the red version and I'm sure it wouldn't be too much work to recolour it to green as well. I mean the work's already been finished, I don't see why they don't use it as it keeps the integrity of the original models perfectly.

Hyenas! A family that sorely needs an update. They're such expressive, unique pets and I would love them to be retextured so I'd want to use them more often.

Serpents would be nice to see some updates for, the cobra models, and I'm still rooting for the new python versions to be tameable. I think they look just fine as a wild beast and would work as a tameable pet just as well. :)

Spiders are my final pick. I admit I'm biased, and I know they've had a lot of new variety over the years, but I'm craving a new tarantula model in particular. The poor things need an update so badly and they could look so good with the current art style!

(Warp stalkers too though! I was equally sad we didn't see a version of them on Draenor as they're some of my favourite WoW creatures, I just didn't pick them because I will forever be happy with my purple and green one and they still look pretty good, but I would be thrilled to see new models!)

If we are including Dread Ravens in with the Carrion Bird family, I'd switch one of mine with the quickness. My hunter needs some dread raven in his life.

Wain this is a lot of work to go into for fun polls (thanks btw!) I hope our lurker stops by :D

I chose bears, cats, hyenas, snakes and warp stalkers. But to me ....................... all of them!!! All the old world models need a really good grooming. Especially wolves, cats and gorillas.

1. Bears.
Image

Seriously, these are the classic hunter pet besides wolves and panthers, and they look god-awful. I would love some updated bears, let alone new types of bear models.

2. Tallstriders.
Image

In my opinion, Terrorbirds were some of the coolest prehistoric animals to have ever lived.
Giant birds with big, chompy, slicing beaks bounding through the tall grass after you: Terrifying!
Low-poly overgrown chickens with a single, outdated model? Not so terrifying.

3. Warpstalkers.
Image
One of the biggest missed opportunities for Warlords of Draenor, if you ask me. More types of giant lizard pets that don't skate when they walk beside you are always welcome. Frilled lizards, monitor lizards, plated lizards, extremely spiny lizards...

4. Serpents.
Image Image

There are so many types of fascinating snakes in the world, and even more in the realms of fantasy. So why do we only have an old cobra and (more recently) floaty arcane wyrms? Giant pythons, constrictors, vipers, all sorts of snakes with great coloration... the possibilities are endless.

5. Hyenas.
Image
Image Image

Hyenas in WoW have unfortunately remained within the "old, outdated model" category for a long time and could sorely use an update, if not entirely new types of hyena-like creatures (like thylacines). This is another missed opportunity for Warlords of Draenor, if you ask me. With all the focus on "savage" and "primal" beasts, it would have been a perfect chance to introduce some #savage prehistoric hyenas.

Honorable mention goes to Spiders, who have a wide variety of models but could really use proper tarantulas and maybe some wolf or jumping spiders as well! Really, just "new furry spiders" would be fine, as not every type of spider is spindly and glossy.

And to everyone who voted in the poll... though I realize our little community may not have any impact on Blizzard's decisions, if you voted for Spirit Beasts, Cats, or Wolves... please, think of the older, not-top-3-popular pet families and how little love they get.

The scaled snake picture made me think of how cool a giant scaled/spined serpent would be. Like spiny scales sticking out everywhere.

Monkeys look like they need a serious update to me... Their hands and feet creep me out.

Mostly bears though, for being one of the most iconic Hunter pets, they're WAYYY outdated.

PS: I want to tame a panda on my panda. Worgen can tame wolves after-all! (Yes, I know it's a bit more complex than that.)

There are already two very obvious favourites here, bears and hyaenas, and it's clear that what people want for them is brand new models not just new skins. In these two cases it's probably very reasonable, though it'd take a lot of work. Hopefully the next expansion is in a place where bears and hyaenas exist!

There are other things that haven't been as popular in the vote but would still be worth considering because they'd only need some new colours and would be easy for artists to do. Especially shale spiders (took me no time to make new skins here so should be easy for professional artists), or new core hounds based on the new model.

So hopefully when we do see more looks we'll see a mix of both :)

I did bears, spiders, monkeys, moths, and dogs.

Bears... really need help. There -is- a new bear model in game and yet the only tamable mob that uses it is Arcturis and he isn't even a bear. Their web-feet and blocky butts are just ... not where the game is, anymore.

Spiders - It still bugs me that the lava bits on the lava tarantulas don't glow. I love that model but they just don't look good anymore. We got the flame spiders, sure, but all of the natural looking ones look horribly outdated.

Monkeys - I don't know how this model even made it in game. It's like a tiny combat pet blown up big and it's just... bad. Bad bad bad bad.

Moths - Moths currently use the 'flat' technology that Bliz tends to use on armor to make dangly bits. Because of this, at certain angles, the antennae visually cross over one another, or look like both are coming out of the same side of the moth's head, and the wings do some pretty Eschery stuff too. Once you see it, you can't unsee it, and I've been unable to even use them since. They need... fixing. A lot of fixing.

Dogs - The dog models are pretty good (though the hellhounds are kind of coarse like all old models) but I picked these just because I want to see more realistic dog breeds than just mastiffs. Right now you've got your choice of Dribbly McFlopface, or... a helldemon. -And- the hellhound models are still too small. More like hellpuppies.

someday I'll find someplace to host a sig that isn't stupid money-grubbing photobucket
