So with some testing I have found, you CAN turn any hunter pet appearance buffed if:

The pet dies BY IGNITE DAMAGE from a Fire Mage wielding the Artifact.

The spell Ignite has to tick down and be the killing blow to the pet in order for it to turn black, flamed, and smoky. It is still a rare proc, but this is the only way we saw this happen. I believe Ignite killing the pet is also why we so rarely see this happen in the wild - it's not a super powerful spell.

1) Go to an open-world arena
2) Get naked
3) Have your pet's killing blow be by the spell Ignite
4) Get lucky
5) Rez
6) Don't go into a queue Arena or Timewalking or you'll lose it!

Variables:

We tested this in an arena (Ring of Trials in Nagrand), not a duel.

EDIT: Have done this to three other pets now, no hidden appearance needed. It's definitely Ignite that does it.

Nicely done! What a fun appearance to have. I'll have to consider if I have any pets I'd want it on, but either way, it's good to have the confirmation. I hope more people can get it and post pictures of their fiery pets.

If I stable my pet and take different ones into an areana or timewalking dungeon, will it still keep the flame appearance?

Well now.... this is good news and a great find, now I'ill have to find me a fire mate STAT!

This. I have a fire mage though. I just am not sure I could multibox it like that. Lot of mages in the guild though

Yes, it is only when it is summoned into an instance like an arena or timewalking that it loses all of the buffs it currently has on.

Whatever causes the debuff Ignite to start ticking, that's what works. It just has to be that debuff ticking down, regardless of what spell applied it, to be what kills it.

Still rare! Took two minutes for one, 10 for another.

Rats! I lost the effect. Didn't do any timewalking dungeons or arenas, so not sure what caused my raven to reset. ;(

So managed to apply the effect to 4 pets last night. About 30 min after I was about to do a dungeon and in a party out the front of the entrance, called out one and was showing it to a mate, dismissed it and summoned another and its effect was gone. Summoned back the 1st one and the effect was gone off that too.

Waited til after some runs and and then pulled other let out of my stable with effect and it was still there. So it seeems to be all a little unstable.

Will try some others later.

Can you tell me more about what you were doing before then? I can't imagine this is a case of a time to buff dropping off because you wouldn't have been able to keep both pets out for the same duration. Ehat dungeon were you in front of and was there anything strange like a toy out?

Did they fix it? Just tried for about 15 mins, repeatedly killing pet with Ignite. No dice.

No, not yet. It's just very random, with no assurance. I set 5 pets on fire in the space of 20 minutes total, then gave up on a friend's after 30 minutes of nothing. A turtle yesterday took around 25. It's complete RNG, but it wasn't fixed an hour ago (and unlikely to be stealthed, as it's totally harmless).

EDIT: I also did lose the buff on one of my stags earlier today - during the Ayamiss the Hunter fight. Not sure what did it, if maybe the pet was grabbed for a sacrifice, but I would treat these pets as fragile. I'd use them for RP and showing off, but get a couple extra as backups if you want to bring them into combat until I can figure out why it drops off.

Hmm, I guess we were just unlucky. I did have a mage kill the pet about 30-40 times though... that's some serious RNG.

All these reports of the buff falling off makes me care a little less though. My Oil-Stained Wolf has been rock solid for like 8 years or however long its been, so this one must be applying the effect differently.

(Think it could be cool if, us that has firemages above lvl 78 (at wich you get ignite) could "lend" or "rent" them out to eachothers hunter chars! )

Just a side note (tested and approved) This effect stacks with the already applied, prior flaming boar effect.
My blazing boar has gone from fresh and flaming, to a blackened apocalyptic inferno of bacon. (with combine total of four visual effects ~ Skin blackened, Fire burning under the model, Flames emitting from middle/center of the boar, and added Black Smoke rising off above)

I have been trying to do this for 2 hours yesterday, had even 2 mages killing my pet. We couldn't make it
Has this been fixed or maybe we were doing it wrong?
Also, we were in Stormheim, PVP zone - is that OK or needs to be any other place?
Anyone on EU succesfully did it and could help me?
