With the recent announcement to let spec/ability changes, as well as all the incoming model updates, I wouldn't be opposed to more slots. I personally probably won't use them all, but I understand that many hunters would.

I think there are far too many stable slots.
There was a much deeper bond with a pet when you used just 3 (one for each spec), you had to feed and teach and level them...
hunters nowadays have a "gotta tame them all"- collection mentality which emerged when Blizz reduced pets to be random buffs in Wrath, rather than your battle companions.
I'd be more than fine with 2 pages in the stable menu.
As it's now, I only use the first page, and yes, that includes all the rare elite tames from all the way back in classic.
Admittedly, I play...several hunters.
