Question about Machano Pets

Do you have to continue to be an engineer to maintain your current machano pets and to tame new ones? It would seem at the moment I am able to maintain my current ones, so I'm hoping I can continue to tame them, as well...

You don't have to be an engineer yourself in order to tame mechanical pets, you just need to learn an item that's
created by an engineer which gives you the ability to tame them. I imagine if you already have this item then you can continue to tame new mechanical pets going forward.
