Need help finding a rare? Check here first!

Unread post by Vephriel »

Let's see if we can cut down on the amount of repeat threads that ask how to find a rare spawn pet. :) Instead we can redirect those conversations here in order to keep everything one in place, and also to serve as an easy reference for others. This topic will be a sort of all-purpose thread for asking questions or posting tips on particular rares.

List of Rare Pets
If you're planning on taming a rare beast be prepared to dedicate some time to the hunt. Though it's always possible to be lucky and find a rare on your first try, don't be discouraged if it takes some camping and long hours to locate them.
  • One of the best resource sites to check first would be WoWhead:
    http://www.wowhead.com/

Simply lookup the name of the pet you're after and the page will show you a zone map including its known spawn points. You can check the Comments section as well to learn more. Posts that have green text are ones that have been voted up by others, and they are most likely ones that will have the information you're looking for.

Also worth noting is that in the page URL of the pet is a number at the very end. That number is the NPC ID which is useful for an addon like NPCscan.

If you are still having trouble finding a rare pet or need some information post a question here and the community can help or point you in the right direction for answers. Please note that nobody can tell you exactly when a rare will spawn, at best they can provide rough estimates on the timers.

Good luck!

Zaricotl Help :(

Unread post by Silivren »

Mod Edit: Merged into this thread. Regarding Zaricotl.

I'm searching for this elusive bird..and have no idea what his spawn timer is..nor do I have any idea if his spawn points are correct on WoWhead since I have heard of him spawning far away from his supposed spawn points but I've no idea where.. Help me please? :( (Also if you have any creepy name ideas for him I'm all for em.. So far its between Croatoan or Ripper)

For Zaricotl, I can confirm that a spawn point is at the bone pile just west of Lethlor Ravine, marked on WoWhead's map:
http://www.wowhead.com/npc=2931/zaricotl

I'm unsure of a new spawn timer. His original one was 5-8 hours, but it has most likely been shortened a bit now.

You won't miss him. :) Though he's technically flying, he's hardly high off the ground. You don't need to look up in the air.

Okay. Figured I might as well condense this info here.

Cata Rare Facts 101:

-Terrorpene hits like a truck. FR and Stam gear is a good idea. He is NOT trappable, as far as I'm aware.
-Ghostcrawler hits like a truck holding a truck holding Arthas holding a truck. In other words, he hits frakking hard.
-Ghostcrawler is also capable of phasing and disappearing. Don't worry if that happens, follow his normal route and he'll pop up again.
-Sambas, Terrorpene, Karoma, Madexx, and Ghostcrawler (supposedly for him, at least. No one has killed GC.) drop Crystalline Tears of Loyalty. They are worth 25 gold. This means it's better off to tame or let someone else tame the pet than kill it. But if you find it, fair and square, and no one is around to tame, and you aren't stealking anything, go ahead and kill it. Don't see why not.
-None of these pets are part of an acheivement.
-Madexx can spawn in five different colors: Red, Blue, Bronze, Green, Black

Those are all random strat tidbits, but I figure they could help in SOME way.

To add to the notes on Terrorpene, a shaman or paladin's resist totem/aura will work wonders on his laser beam, if you can get one. And no, he isn't trappable.

He is ice trappable. This is a wise idea, since his hopping around can be annoying, painful, and may break tames if there's someone other than you there (because he ping-pongs).

Also, while the model is very recognizable, I found that it was remarkably small in the wild, compared to a lot of the oversized rares. Use NPCScan or SilverDragon, for sure. At the very least, a /target macro. Don't trust your own eyes. He's easy to pick out if he's spawned in a couple of the beast-less areas, but he'll be 'just another red dot on the tracking map' if he's amongst the Worgs of the area.

Try and look late at night. This goes for all rares, of course, but because Twilight Highlands is such a highly-patrolled and farmed area, rares may not last more than a couple minutes alive during prime times.

And above all: *BE PATIENT*. For every person who gives a 'I found him after only TWO HOURS!' or 'I did my first flyby out of chance and there he was!', there will be ten or so who are saying 'Cata has been out for months and I'm still looking!' or the like. People want to post about their good luck. So there's a disproportionate number of 'good luck' postings to 'normal luck' ones.

Spawn timer for Lupos?

Unread post by Araela »

Hey all,

I finally broke down and decided to make an Orc hunter to continue my wolf pack obsession. :D Anyone know the spawn timer on Lupos? I'm sitting here trying not to be noticed by the multiple alliance running around the area, and he's not here yet. Thanks!
