Our 31st family is the creepy spider family!

Spider facts

~Spiders have been tameable since Vanilla WoW.

~Spiders have five models and 27 different skins.

~Spiders have 18 tameable rares. These are Anthriss, Chatter, Chitter, Creepthess, Darkmist Widow, Deth'tilac (unique skinned), Gretheer, Kirix, Krethis the Shadowspinner, Leech Widow, Mother Fang, Naraxis, Rekk'tilac, Shanda the Spinner, Skitterflame, Solix (unique skinned), Sri'skulk, and Terror Spinner. Spiders also have two non-tameable rares, Crystal Fang and Hyakiss the Lurker, which are both instance bosses.

~With so many spiders, only two are unique skinned named members. Both are rares listed above: Deth'tilac and Solix.

~Back in Wrath, spiders were tamed by 4.5% of level 80 hunters. Placing them at number 6 on the list. (Source)

~Back in Wrath, bonespider_grey was the most tamed skin at 39.9%. Minespiderskinjungle was the least tamed skin at 0.3%. (Source Note: Necrotic Webspinner shows up as "skin unknown" as they where made tameable late Wrath.)

~Smolderweb Hatchling is a spider minipet matching minespiderskincrystal. Formally obtainable from the quest En-Ay-Es-Tee-Why pre-Cataclysm. Now Mother Smolderweb drops a smolderweb egg for players to raise into a hatchling.

~Giant spider models (also known as spiked Outland spiders) have no swim animations.

~Spiders have a gem skin, five different color fire skins, magma tarantula skin, and five undead bone spider skins.

~Chitter got his name from the Petopia forums!

~Darkmist Broodqueen makes nerubian sounds.

~Two spiders might been found in the oddest of places, even in the middle of cities. Both Deadwind Widow and Deepmoss Webspinner drop down on players from above. When kited long distances, they can bug and become immune to all damage (except area AoE effects such as Explosive Trap) and will follow the player anywhere on it's respective continent. When a player leaves the continent the spiders will stay at that spot until the player returns. They even stay up if the player is logged out.

~Terokkarantula is one of the largest beasts hunters can tame. Pictures of her from early MoP beta where pets retained their wild sizes can be seen starting here. She is even taller than wild devilsaurs!

~Two spider had faster than 2.0 attack speed in Vanilla. These where Spawn of Mar'li (1.4) and Spire Spiderling (1.5). Spire Spiderlings used to have 1.0 attack speed when Blackrock Spire was introduced, but the spiders had to be toned down for players to survive their attacks!

~Gretheer looked and sounded like a tallstrider in early Vanilla, yet still tamed as a spider!

Spiders is one family that I love some of their skins, especially minespiderskinjungle and bonespider_black, but I've had a hard time bonding with one. I'm not an achnophobe. Spiders are cool. I guess my current hunters just don't fit well with a spider by their side.

I have a spider currently on Ptaysanwee, who was Gretheer in the wild, but I haven't use him in a long while. I have almost no bond with him and will release him when I remember to.

One spider I did bond with was during early MoP beta was with Terokkarantula due to her huge size. I named her Zaltana, meaning "high mountain." I have a bunch of pictures posted in the thread I linked for Terokkarantula. My picture of her was even featured on Mania's blog! When she went back to normal size I sadly released her. I would love to have my giant spider back someday, but for now I have screenshots saved of her.

Eeee, spiders! <3

It still shocks me to my core that this is the pet I have more of than any other - by a wide margin. I've written about Orpheus before. I've also written about my unexpected lava spider family. I have multiple Chatters and Chitters on alts. And despite all this, I still don't understand the appeal. I understand the tarantulas by choice, but the lava spiders....that was a completely different story. They look fantastic and are incredibly practical....but somehow, there is something about them beyond that that I just can't put into words. There's a reason Orpheus is named for Calliope's son, after all. :D

Chitter, by the way, was most definitely named by Veph after she searched for Chatter for me. He's ours, 100% confirmed. There's no alleged origin here. We know that Noah is real and this is fact. :)

EDIT: Helps if I link correctly to the lava spider family story...

The only spider I have and use is also one of my favorite pets. I'd always had a strange relationship with Deth'tilac- he's beautiful, but I found him a little, well, overused. Overhyped because he was the "big bad". I hated, hated, HATED seeing hundreds of Deths around because hunters wanted to show off their cool, rare pet. (No offense to anyone, just a pet peeve of my own.) So whenever I saw Deth, I just said "No" and left him alone. I didn't want him. I certainly didn't want to be one of a thousand hunters running around with the "Big bad" of the time. I went back to my other pets. I was happy.

Deth wouldn't leave my head.

Finally I logged on and looked around the Molten Front. Every single rarespawn that could be up, was up. Nobody was there. I agonized over it for a while, then tamed Solix, who has a coloration I much prefer. I love the orange and the blue. So beautiful. But he didn't… feel right. Finally I gave in, and I asked a friend for help. We traded off sacrificial spiders until Deth was at my side. As hyped up as I was, it wasn't really hard. At all. xD

And he was perfect. So perfect. I ran around with her, thrilled, and eventually wondered what to name her. All I could think about was how blue she was. "The bluest blue ever," in fact. And really, at that point, there wasn't any other option. TARDIS is my gorgeous blue spider and I love her. She isn't Deth, she isn't rare, not in my books- she's just TARDIS.

Spiders. Don;t get me started an how much I love them. I <3 my Deth. even though he sort of hates me...(he's such a pain to tame.)
I love to take pics of these guys. it's funny.

Image
I love that pic. Sadly, I never tamed the little guy, But I still loves him cause he's goofy. Maybe, in Mists, I might go back and claim him as a friend.

I hated, hated, hated WoW spiders for the longest time. I'm arachnophobic and the little spindly leg spiders look and move so much like spiders in real life that it would scare me every single time I saw one. I literally cried and bawled my eyes out the first time I ever fought Hadronox.

But, over time, I eventually got over my fear of spiders in game (although the black widow models still creep me out) and I started taming some of them on my hunters. My worgen has Solix, which was a harder tame than anticipated and I died like 3 times, trading off with a troll at one point until he let me have at the tame again and I succeeded (my worgen was an orc at that time). He's really quite a beautiful spider.
Image

One of my absolute favorite spiders ever totally snuck up on me and belongs to Rosaliah.
Image
Rose has had a couple of different spiders that I like with her--the brown bone spider and Naraxis--and as much as I loved the way Shadra (Naraxis) looked with her, it still didn't feel quite right. One day as I was out completing Molten Front dailies on Rose, I decided to explore just to see who might be up. Low and behold poor little unloved Skitterflame was up and just bobbing in her lava peacefully.
Image
After staring at her for a minute, I knew in my heart that *this* was Rose's spider. It didn't matter that she had a common counter part; she was perfect. I think I messed up the tame a couple of times before finally getting my timing right and capturing her to call her mine. And I knew exactly who she was and what name she would have--she was how Shadra had wanted to look all along, I just needed to level and figure that out.
Image

Tsara has the teal, glass gem looking spindly leg spider and I'm still not quite sure how I feel about him yet.
Image
He matches Tsara's coloring perfectly, but something about him still kinda puts me on edge and I'm not sure if I'm overly happy with the name I gave him. Plus, as a PvE'r, I don't find as much use for my spiders; I much prefer using Pokeweed, Tsara's crab.

You know, when I first saw the lava spiders in the Molten Front preview, I wasn't really impressed. Then I saw them in person and was like ooooo. I love the flame effects and the glowies. I had to have at least my BANARCHY SPIDER. And then as I saw them... they kinda grew on me. I may have to let someone go for an MoP pet, but I am definitely keeping a lava spider or two. :3 I will always cherish the friends and stories I made while hunting down the MF rares, even if I have a few grey hairs.

... also I love the way the lava spiders wriggle their legs. Da da da *point!*

Love my Deth'tilac, Asura. Server first, she was the one spawned when I (and many others) got in a day early due to the weird double-daily-reset. Took three attempts because I was anxious and didn't want to take the time to clear a large kiting area...so I just used the area behind that wall, and disengaged past her when I ran out of room. Needless to say, that...took some refining to get the timing right. Now she's my runner-chaser when I decide I have a hankering for some casual PvP...Warsong Gulch anyone?

I suppose one could say I'm a little spider obsessed given that I have 7 in total; 6 of those residing with Synestra alone! I'd really like to add a tarantula model someday for Drakara but that'll have to wait til their models get a much needed upgrade and/or additional skins are released.

Kadija's spider buddy is Sangria.
Image
Sangria wasn't a planned tame, per say, and her appeal sorta crept up on me over a short period of time. I was searching for suitable pets that might fit in well with Trolls when I remembered the relationship forest/jungle trolls had with their spider gods. Kadija also needed something that was colorful to complement her other stabled compadres. In the end, it finally came down to deciding between a jungle spider model or this little sweetheart ... and well, you can see who won that contest :D

Synestra has one very special spider in her roster. Her name is Cavatica, which was inspired from Charlotte's full name in the story of Charlotte's Web.
Image
I have very fond memories still of the long and arduous trek as an Undead to the Alliance islands of Darnassus, and then onto the Azuremyst, and Bloodmyst isles to obtain my spider at level 20 (after the Cataclysm, so there was no ship to sneak onto in Auberdine, no water walking potion for that low of a level, nada). Ah, the crazy things we hunters sometimes do for our beloved pets!

I also have a set of 5 bone spiders for Synestra as part of a themed concept for her stampede ability. Their names are (in order of appearance) Sith, Vritra, Cydaea, Jezebel, and Bellatrix.
Image Image Image Image Image
The bone spiders are almost too perfect a pet to pass up for an Undead hunter and they're really beautiful specimens in their own right!

Oh man, I have so much I could write here. <3 I'm so tired right now though that for the moment I'll just start by saying I created a character based solely around the idea to tame every spider model that existed in game. My undead hunter, named Spiders.

I was successful, well at least until they added the new Molten Front models, but since I locked her at level 80 I decided to just exclude them.

Here's a thread with photos of all her beauties. ^^

Anyways, I'll do a proper write up on Sabbath later when I have more energy. :)

I am HORRIBLY arachnophobic. Tyger, I'm right with you. I knew I had a problem when I realized I hadn't walked in grass for 10 years because arachnids live there.

I've thought about therapy. I mean, this terror makes no sense! But, the therapy results in me holding a tarantula. ....

ANYWAY!

Clearly, I have problems with in game spiders. Oh the tears, the instances completely avoided, zones blocked from my consciousness...

Then one day, I'm skirting up the side of the Molton Front to find Skarr. I run face first into a giant green lava spider who promptly ate said face.

After I stopped squealing in surprise, shock, and terror (and tossing the laptop to the edge of the bed), I realized that it seemed, at least by looking at it from the "You Died" screen, that this giant green lava spider seemed just as freaked out as I was.

Once I rez'd, I decided that MAYBE I could tame this guy. If I could tolerate looking at him for more than a split second.

It became an obsession that took a course of 4 hours. FINALLY, my fiance came home and wondered why on earth I looked so haggard.

"I'm taming a spider" I said. His eyebrows shot clear to the ceiling in surprise.

It was then he decided it was his life's mission to help me tame that spider.

We took about another half hour before finally taming Kirix. Once by my side, I cringed really hard but didn't throw the computer. I had immediate psychosomatic itching all over my body, but I didn't abandon Kirix.

Instead, I named him "Gold" after the 2k gold in repair costs he cost me! LOL

Now, he's one of my main pets that run around with me :) I really feel like I can relate to him. He's so panicked out there in the Molton Front that he just smashes anything that comes into his LOS. I scream in terror and make anybody else smash a spider that comes in my LOS. We're really not that different, eh?

However, I still can't tolerate his swimming animation. I tried. He got dismissed. >.>; But, he sure is beautiful otherwise.

 Totally understand how you feel. My fear for real spiders majorly out-does my fear of the in game ones. Although the spider pots that With Doctors in DIII throw freak me the hell out (I forced my bf to stop using the move when he was around me) and every now and then spiders that appear in games still totally freak me out.

I like the connection you managed to form with Kirix and the sort of reasoning you made behind it; it makes sense. :)

And yeah... spider swim animation... *shudders*

Spiders are one of my favourite creatures, so I was always crestfallen that none of the in-game ones ever felt right with Veph. I desperately wanted her to have a spider, and although I love each and every model, there was never a specific click for her. A few came close, like the green tarantula (which has always been one of my personal favourites), but in the end they were still missing...something.

I eventually satisfied my arachnid obsession by creating my undead hunter themed around taming all the spiders. It was perfect, and I was happy to finally own all of the skins.

Then the Molten Front was released, and there it was. The pull. Deth'tilac called to me from the very beginning. Everything from his name, to his death metal references, to his purple colour. It was meant to be. I had finally found my spider.

In my fevered race to unlock the quest hub after it was patched in I ended up being among the very first few people to step foot in the Molten Front. I made a beeline for Deth'tilac, and there he was waiting for me. The tame was a dizzying blur followed by a heart stopping DC right at the end, but I got him. I've never felt any particular attachment towards things such as 'server first' accomplishments, but I have to admit owning the very first spawn of Deth'tilac on my realm was something special, personally. Not as a bragging right, but as a small confirmation of how much this spider felt destined to be mine.

Sabbath is really one of my favourite pets now, I'm always in awe at the beauty of his model when I have him by my side.

I love these stories. They remind me of Schroedinger, the epic Solix. The person I helped with that Solix tame has both Solix AND looted a tear. It was so odd. And yet... strangely epic. That has to be one of the most incredible tames I've helped with ever.

Now that I think about it, a lot of my happy tames were the lava spiders. Even if I lost my first Anthriss tame to a jerkadin.

I love spiders IRL, and always wanted one in-game, but for some reason I could never really bond with any. I think it may be because I kept trying tarantulas, but their mouths are all wrong and it bothered the crap out of me.

Anyway, in WotLK while doing ICC, I noticed some little critters running around called "Blood Spiders" if memory serves. For some reason, I hadn't noticed that spider skin until that point. I wasn't even sure that there was a tamable version of it out there anywhere (though I figured there probably was). I looked it up on Petopia and found a couple that I could try out.

Naturally, Naraxis was the one I intended to get. I love rares, something about them just seems special. Imagine my disappointment when it wasn't there. The next closest place was a hop, skip and a jump away in Stranglethorn Vale - the now-retired raid Zul'Gurub. It had been a long time since I had stepped foot in there, but somehow I still remembered how to navigate it.

I came upon the spider area, and was pleased to see some Razzashi Broodwidows (Broodmothers? - can't remember now) wandering about. I foolishly thought that taking down the extras would be a breeze. I had forgotten about the stuns and drunken-like state. I nearly died with the first group, and accidentally killed the Broodwidow in the process.

I moved on to the next group, and tried to trap her. It worked, but somehow she broke free and after I had killed the other adds, my boar nearly killed her, too. I quickly dismissed him and tamed my spider.

Immediately, the name Naphtali came to me (though I added an extra "h"). It's Hebrew for "struggle/struggling". It seemed fitting since I had struggled to tame her. There was this instantaneous connection, and she took on this very protective, motherly personality. This seemed even more the case when I'd mine saronite. She had this tendency to sit on top of the saronite, as if to deter would-be ore ninjas. It was this odd thing that so far, only she has done (see pic below).

Still, the rare Naraxis pulled me, so I went out there one night with Naphthali in tow. I put her on Stay in front of the cave entrance, to kind of compare her to Naraxis (though they're identical, I know - I'm just weird like that). When I looked back towards the entrance of the cave, I felt overwhelmingly guilty for even thinking of replacing her for some dumb rare. There she sat, obediently waiting for me to come back to her, such was her love for me. I bid Naraxis farewell and took my beloved Naphthali home.

I have never bonded with a spider this much before or since taming Naphthali. I've tried others, and they just don't have that same...thing...to them. I love that spider so much! She's definitely one of my top four pets, and always will be.

What's wonderful is that I originally wanted the "rare" version of that skin. Well, when they retired Zul'Gurub, her particular mob went with it. So now, she truly is rare as can be. ^_^

(A couple sigs of my "fab four", too.)

Spiders never really were high on my list of potential pets. In the past I'd tamed one of the fuzzy tarantula skins but didn't keep him long. When the challenge tames at the Molten Front were announced, I really wanted to tame some of them, just for the challenge. Of course, there were hunters all over camping the various ones. Rather than spend ages waiting, I figured I'd just wait until I stumbled across one.

One evening when doing the dailies, I ran across Kirix. More correctly, Kirix ran across me. He'd spawned and was on one of his killing sprees around the quest givers. There was one other Horde hunter there and 2 (or maybe 3) Alliance hunters. Amazingly, everyone was taking turns trying to tame. I got in line and died..and died..and died. I was at the 2 minute rez timer point by that time, but stubbornly kept getting in line for another shot and try to get the deterrence/disengage timing down right. On my final attempt, I was watching my health dropping while that tame timer got closer and closer. I died again, but just as I did, it looked like Kirix despawned. I wasn't sure though and ran back. On the way, I whispered the other Horde hunter who'd been attempting the tame and asked if she'd seen Kirix despawn. She said he hadn't. Dang. However when I rezzed, he wasn't there any more. Lo and behold, there was "Spider" available to call as a pet. I'd managed to get the tame off just in time.

Kirix is now named Wihio and is a lot less spastic and homicidal than in his wild days. I've really grown fond of him. Later on I tamed Anthriss just for the heck of it, but let him go. I never rand across Deth'tilac when my hunter was still doing dailies at the Molten Front. I don't know that I'd have gone after him. It would've been a lot of work and Deth is cool looking, but it seems that he's the spider I see most often alongside hunters. I don't see myself replacing Wihio any time soon.

I love spiders! There are so many great choices, I can't settle on one and switch them out fairly often. I've tamed all the models except fire spiders (seem too elemental to me). I surprised myself with my current pet Maple, a red & yellow spiked spider. Much gaudier than my usual pet :)

I think I've owned every skin and model of spider in the game at some point or another, but unfortunately I simply don't have enough stable space to accommodate them all. I adore spiders, both in real life as well as in-game, and I have a lot of them.

Lindy has only one spider, her beloved Yavanna, who is gentle and kind and sensitive. She is one of her favourite pets, and is also one of my favourite mine spider skins. I had long looked for a hunter to pair her up with, and finally I found a match. Lindy is 85 now, and as you can see from the gear pictured above, Yavanna has been by her side for most of that.

Destiny was named so because she was destiny for Mozag. As soon as I saw the fire spider colours, I knew the red belonged to Mozag. I didn't even bother with the rare version, and just nabbed one of the cute, regular ones. She doesn't have a very strong personality, actually. She is calm and collected at all times, and follows Mozag like a loyal pet, almost as if she had no will of her own. There may be a reason behind this, but if so, Moz hasn't found it out yet.

Gotta toot my own horn here, courtesy of my newest "trick" tame, Deth'tilac.

Interesting story - I was doing my usual Firelands dalies, but I'd neglected to reset my NPC scan after seeing a tamed Deth earlier in the week - oddly, a passing DK pointed him out to me, and suggested I tame.

Knowing the trick to him, I suggested we get a druid to spam Roots to hold him while I sent my pet in a few times to drop his HP via Deth Strike. But there were no druids around at that particular hour who were properly phased to help.

Nearly gave up after about a half-hour of searching, and even dropped group (the DK was grouped with a Paladin, whose bro was a druid, but the latter wasn't on at the time) to finish my dailies, before a few minutes later pally said druid-bro came on, and within a few minutes more, Deth'tilac was mine. Had a close call as druid nearly ran out of mana near the end, and I almost mistimed dismissing my pet and almost made Deth suicide, but finally he was tamed.

Ozzy is fearless. :headbang:
