This is the first story that I've ever written and posted and I'm still rather nervous about posting it here! Of all the places that Airwyn had told her about, Emwe’s favorite was always Winterspring. She imagined the beautiful snowy hills and mountains, the wonderful hot springs and all the different kinds of wildlife. When she got a bit older and more experienced with her bow, she decided to venture to Winterspring on her own; she had gotten a map of the area from Airwyn and had purchased a hippogryph ride to Winterspring from her friend’s home in Darnassus. As the hippogryph flew over the elven lands, Emwe took in the beautiful lovely purple and blue hues everything seemed to have, until they passed over Astranaar. Her breath caught in her throat and her heart ached for the Night Elves that had lost their homes to the wretched Orcs of the horde. Before she could dwell on her disgust the hippogryph sped up, flying over the mountains into Felwood. Emwe had never been to any of these places, only hearing the stories about them. The taint in Felwood made her feel sick, seeing all the animals with gaping wounds and bones exposed did not improve her nausea. In almost no time at all the could feel a chill creeping into the tainted air. She instinctively pulled her cloak around herself, pleased with the warmth it brought. And then she was looking past the brown scenery of Felwood, into the beautiful whites and purples of Winterspring.
Emwe’s mouth fell open at the sheer beauty. It was exactly how Airwyn had described it, and every bit as amazing as the stories! Pushing her long light brown hair behind her ears, she gazed down at the creatures roaming through the snow: the furlbogs, the chimaeras and even large snow owls! But her mind started to wander; where were all the large frostsabers that Airwyn had told her about? She didn’t have much time to think as the hippogryph touched down in the small goblin city of Everlook. She walked into the small town and looked about, finding the inn and stepping inside. She relished the warmth that the fireplace brought and just sat there for a while before gathering her thoughts and deciding to go exploring. She pulled out the map and scanned the drawings, her large brown eyes setting upon a place labeled as Frostsaber Rock. That MUST be where the frostsabers are! Tracing the road from Everlook to Frostsaber Rock she decided it wouldn’t take too long to get there if she borrowed a mount from the stable master. She was given a chestnut mare. She ran her hands through her thick coat and mounted her swiftly. Directing the mare down the road Emwe’s mind was wandering, both taking in the scenery and imagining what the animals will be like. Soft snowflakes began to fall and Emwe smiled, tilting her head back and staring up at the flakes as they fell. She pulled her hood up over her head and urged the horse faster. Emwe began to notice how quiet Winterspring was. There was hardly any other noise besides the crunching of snow beneath the horse’s feet; it was so peaceful here. A small clearing came into view and then a large rock loomed in the distance; she had reached Frostsaber Rock! Tying the horse to a nearby tree she entered the clearing alone, her bow at her side should she need to defend herself.
The first thing she saw were several dens, some that appeared empty and others with small cubs sitting around the entrance. She grinned as she saw a small purple cub, that was certainly the cutest thing she had ever seen! Before she could take a step closer, a larger version of the cub stepped out of the den, picking up the cub in her mouth before slinking back into the cave. Staying behind a larger snowdrift, Emwe approached a different den. Two lavender colored frostsabers stepped out. They were smaller than the adult cat she had just seen so they were not fully grown; both were female, sisters maybe? Emwe heard a crunch of footsteps on the snow across the frozen lake. As the figure came into view, the blood in her veins turned to ice and then melted and seemed to boil. Horde. Not just horde, Orc. She suppressed a growl as she notched an arrow and drew her bow, pulling the string tight. She watched him carefully, taking aim, frowning as he pulled out a bow of his own. Lowering her bow she turned to see what he was aiming at. It was the two frostsabers from earlier and it seemed as though they couldn’t see him! Scowling, Emwe drew her bow again; aiming toward his large skull, she released her arrow. It hit home and the Orc crumpled to the ground, the arrow protruding from the side of his head. It was then that Emwe heard an anguished cry; returning her gaze to the sabers from before, her heart sank. His own arrow had hit and killed the smaller of the cats. The larger had stepped out from the cave that she had retreated into, approaching her sister’s body. She bumped it with her nose and let out an upset cry, licking at the fur around the wound. Emwe’s heart went out to her and before she could do anything, her body reacted on its own. She staggered to her feet and approached the lone purple cat. She pulled a small piece of meat from her bags and extended her hand to the saber. The large frostsaber looked at her warily before gingerly taking the meat from her hands. Swallowing it quickly, it subtly asked her for more with a small lick of Emwe’s hand. A smile broke out on Emwe’s face and she pulled the rest of the meat form her bag, placing it before the cat. She then engulfed it, returning to her spot by her sister’s fallen body, bobbing her head at Emwe as if to ask her to come over. Tears pricked in Emwe’s eyes, she approached the two cats. Pulling the arrow from the smaller one’s side she threw it into the snow. She took a seat beside her new found friend. Pulling her glove off, she ran her fingers through the soft, lavender colored fur. The cat gave a quiet cry, followed by a larger sigh and dropped her head in Emwe’s lap. She’s mourning was all Emwe could think. The tears had escaped from her brown eyes and began to flow down her cheeks. “I know just how you feel”, was all she said. And with a sigh of her own, Emwe buried her face in the saber’s coat, sobbing as she recalled losing her own sister. Emwe rose to her feat and was surprised as the cat did the same. “Do you want to come with me?” Emwe asked. The cat just took her place at Emwe’s side, rubbing her large head against her leg. “I’ll take that as a yes”, Emwe smiled, rubbing the cat behind her ears. She had more in common with this cat than anyone else; both had lost a sister, and that sister had been lost to an Orc. Emwe crouched down to the cat’s level, “You remind me of my sister, how would you like to be called Tia?” Tia responded by licking her new masters face. Emwe giggled and embraced her new friend. The new pair was so much alike, they were one in the same.
