Oh no you don't need to play GWs to play GW2 it's a standalone sequal. As said above you only need to play GWs if you want HoM but that's not something you need just extra.

You may want to bare in mind that the GW2 is not be a lot like the original GWs. At least as far I know, but if you want, I know you can get a free trial of GW.
Rogue? No. I do think classes are going to be more pure this time around though.
How it works now is you get the one class as your main spec and the attribute that is tied to that, then you pick another "class" as your additional...thing.
Like my ranger right now is a Ragner/Necro or "RN" she has access to both ranger and necro skills 100%. Only limitations are the way stats work, you get the one primary stat as an extra for whatever your main is, and you get some stat types for your additional deal just not the baseline stat for it.
