Dire Horns:
Facts:
- Appearing under the "Creatures" header in the patch notes: "Dire Horns have been added as a tameable species for Hunters that have learned the required skill. Aspiring Dire Horn owners should seek out clues regarding these auspicious beasts." (source)
- A book "Ancient Tome of Dinomancy" will be required to learn how to tame them. The book can drop randomly from the dinomancers on the Isle of Giants. (source)
- All five colors of organic dire horns can be found on the Isle of Giants, on the north side of Kun Lai Summit. Orange is also located on the Isle of the Thunder King. Maps showing the isle's location and where each of the five colors can be found on the isle are in the related video.
- As of the first build, nothing in Un'Goro Crater has been flagged as a Dire Horn or otherwise tameable. (source)

Spirit Beasts:
Facts:
- Also appearing under the "Creatures" header in the patch notes: "Fite spectral porcupine fite! Three new spectral porcupine spirit beasts have appeared across Pandaria as tameable beasts, though taming them may provide quite a challenge." (source)
- The delayed spirit beasts of patch 5.1 have appeared!
- The spirit porcupines mark a return to the 4.2 challenge taming mechanics. They need to be kited until they reach 20%, like Deth'tilac, but there are no shortcuts to taking off chunks of their health.
- They also hit like trucks (especially Degu), so the tame beast glyph and deterrence are highly recommended for actual the taming part.
- They are perfectly visible in the open.
- They are marked as gold dragon elites and have a very short respawn timer (~10m).
- Dying to any of the three means a hefty run from the nearest graveyard. Degu is the worst, since you can end up resing as far away as Halfhill.
- Slows confirmed to work against all three: Concussive Shot, Ice Trap, Snake Trap, Binding Shot (including the stun). and Glaive Toss (unfortunately largely uneffective due to being such a small slow).
- Powershot's knockback works, but is largely impractical during a kite, due to having a cast time. Glyphed Explosive Trap does not work.
- Intimidation works, but would be difficult to pull off during a solo kite. The hunter would have to intimidate, heart of the phoenix, and abandon the pet.
- Mirrored Blades doesn't work on Degu, since his quills go through Deterrence.
- When tamed, they are larger than regular porcupines.

Degu:
Image
Zone: Krasarang Wilds
Challenge Mechanic: He throws barbed quills that hit for massive amounts of damage if you move too far away from him while kiting and destroys you in melee range. Thankfully, he also moves slower than his siblings. He needs to be kited in his dead zone, so the hunter is not hit by either the melee or ranged attack. Scatter Shot and Entangling Roots do NOT work on him. Of the three, he's the only one to move from his spawn point (which is, as marked, on the west side).
Map: Image

Gumi:
Image
Zone: Kun-Lai Summit
Challenge Mechanic: He runs faster than his siblings and resides in the Kun-Lai Mountains. This means kiting him around the very rocky terrain before he enters the tameable range. Aspect of the Cheetah is a must. Scatter Shot and Entangling Roots do NOT work on him.
Map: Image

Hutia:
Image
Zone: Jade Forest
Challenge Mechanic: She casts an interruptable heal while moving. Scatter Shot, Silencing Shot, and Entangling Roots work on her.

i could have sworn that back when spirit beasts where slated for 5.1 we where pretty sure they where adding more than 1 at the time. i am assuming we don't have enough details to know exactly how many we will be recieving at this time am i right kalliope?

Correct. :) We can only presume that we're getting the one (or ones) from 5.1 in 5.2, but since it didn't happen then, we really don't have much to go on. Was there a spirit beast planned for 5.2 as well? Were there multiple spirit beasts planned for either patch? We don't know! So unfortunately, it's still only an educated guess that we're even getting one this patch.

At least we do know Dire Horns are coming and they will have some sort of challenge. :D

Indeed. Kalliope, I'm looking forward to your detailed videos on the dire horns. That will be my first stop as soon as 5.2 goes live. Thanks to your past videos, I've been first on my server to obtain many a rare pet!

The green Dire Horn in particular beckons to me. It'll be the perfect counterpart to my king krush! Even if it's the common color, if you could just do a swoop by their general area that'd be awesome (when you get on the ptr that is :p)!

It's honestly my favorite pet addition since the rhinos! I visit the dire horn thread frequently to admire the different colors. Heh, guess that's be hunter spirit in me.

*Deadly
*Durable
*Dire Horn

Considering past iterations of this thread, this seems the most appropriate place to confirm that clawed tracks are still backwards (Hexapos). I checked Portent and his still go the correct way.

Thanks, Quiv - will assume that applies to all of the claw-tracked rares then.

Just to let everyone know that Patch 5.2 IS now Live. However I took a fly over to the Isle of Giants and there are currently no mobs there, save for Oondasta the giant Devilsaur Boss Monster that is being introduced there. The Isle can be found directly north of the Troll Questing hub in Kun-Lai Summit, though I'm going to wait until I know if there will be some critters on the island before doing more exploring. I may go back and check out old areas and see if anymore of the worm models like the Amber Parasite and Gorishi Grub are tameable though :)

Live? Don't you mean in the PTR? PTR =/= Live. Live usually refers to regular gameplay rather than the PTR. :)

XD Derp my brain kinda went silly on me, but yes the PTR is now open to play on. Again I didn't do much I actually jumped right on after it was already playable >> Went directly to the Isle of Giants XD But I don't think it's open for anything at the moment as I only saw Oondasta on there... that guy is just so gorgeous up close... and HUGE >>

Yeah I flew up to him on my Pre-made hunter in the Vials of Sand Mount form XD By his head he's huge <_< Hopefully more will show up on the Island, if Oondasta's on there I'm going to be that will be where we can hope to find the new models for Devilsaurs and the Dire Horns :) and perhaps more dinos as well :3

In the current patch, he wouldn't be Tameable anyway. Aren't bosses 3 levels above the content they appear in? Maybe next xpac he will be!

Indeed, but it had to be confirmed regardless. :)

Besides, someone would have asked. ;)

Thing like Krichon or Cracklefang (level 91 daily quest bosses) are marked as tamable, and so's the Stone Guard (raid bosses in MSV). Unless Blizzard specifically doesn't think this model should be tamable, I see no reason Oondasta wouldn't be marked, for the future.

It is covered with a lot of armor and troll stuff, which seems to be a thing Blizzard is avoiding when it comes to pets (there are more armored things that follow this rule than have been made tamable), but yeah, I could see it being flagged in the future. Even if it was, it'd be a pain to find it up even after MoP has gone I expect, because if I recall correctly he drops a mount.
