Dahlia

I've decided to name my Tallstrider Dahlia, but haven't decided how to pronounce it. I know there are multiple ways to pronounce the first syllable, but I want to have it rhyme with gall, instead of gal or gale. So I'm just trying to decide if I want it to be two or three syllables.

Me too. I never imagined people would pronounce it differently. It's a beautiful name regardless and I highly approve of any and all Tallstriders as pets. :headbang:

As a German I'm not sure how native English speaking people might pronounce it, but I would say closest is Dahl - ee - uh. Dahlia or as we know it Dahlie(Dahl ee eh) is a very pretty flower and I love the name for a pet. In German phonetics I would write Dahlia ['da.lja], not sure if this might help you. The focus on the "da" and the "lja" kind of added. I would just use two syllables in German but three in English.... Languages can be strange...

The traditional pronunciation for the flower in English dictionaries is DAHL-yuh. But I think most any American who was unfamiliar with the word would assume it is pronounced DAHL ee uh. I happen to like both of them, hence the poll :)

And I've always been fond of Tallstriders and their screeches; I was very, Very happy when we got Tallstrider mounts!

I guess I'm the oddball of the group. I've always pronounced it Dahl-yuh. Then again, I've known people to say it both ways. I suppose part of it is influenced by where you come from.

Personally, I find the yuh sound rolls off the tongue much easier when said aloud than the long e. Both work though. Just go with whatever sounds most natural for you :D

i always pronounce it as Dah-lee-ya, with a heavier 'ya' at the end rather then the 'uh' which sounds more like a thump noise. But thats also cause i am a huge fan of the song 'Hey There Delilah' by Plain White Tee's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbJtYqBYCV8. Both the term Dahlia and Delilah come off the same to me in sound ^^

I pronounce it Dahl-eye-uh. I know that this isn't a conventional pronunciation, but I like the sound of it, more than the 2 common/correct ones.

"Dahl-yuh"

Unless of course all of the people who covered the Black Dahlia murder of 1947 pronounced it wrong... including all of movies and shows that have covered it since then in some aspect.

Thanks for the input, everyone. My Tallstrider let it be known that she prefers "Dahl-ee-uh darling", so that's what we're going with! :)
