Human Hunter lore question. Please help.

Hi everyone! So, my main character is a human BM hunter, and I made an entire back story for her from birth to present day in Legion. The other day, I was talking about Illidan with some fellow players on my realm, and I mentioned how weird it felt for my character (Arwyn) to be working alongside him on the Broken Shore after killing him in Outland years ago; but then someone told me that because humans couldn't be hunters until Cataclysm, there was no way Arwyn could have been there. They continued by saying I can't claim that she participated in anything from Vanilla wow through WotLK. So, yeah, I'm feeling really upset now :(
The thing is, I know Blizzard didn't add them until Cataclysm because of class gameplay balance, or something like that, but lore wise, I can't find any reason for human hunters not existing pre-Cat. I mean, we have people like Tyrathan Khort and Nathanos Blightcaller who are human (undead human in Nathanos' case) hunters before Cataclysm. Also, there are human hunters in Amberpine Lodge and Grizzly Hills from WotLK. So, my question is, is it ok for me to RP that my character has been on the scene from day one?

That's absolutely silly! There's no reason at all that your character couldn't have been a hunter for years. Blood elves weren't playable until BC, but that doesn't mean that they only started existing at all post-Outlands. Similarly, human hunters are very well documented in lore- if anything, I'd honestly say that "human hunter" is as close to a character without a class as you can have, considering just about any human could probably be trained in a few days to pick up a gun and shoot a deer. Bam, right there, that's a baby MM hunter. Give them a dog and they're ready to go. Unlike with, say, Sunwalkers, nobody "unlocked" the knowledge of how to shoot a bow for humans. :,D

I wouldn't go by what people on RP realms say anyway, though. My experience with the general populace (especially on trade and the like) is that people are EXTREMELY elitist and picky- jut play what's fun for you!Un

game mechanics =/= lore

They were plenty human hunters in Grizzly Hills and also as followers of Nessingwary. And humans have to hunt for food anyway, so it's silly for any race that eats animals for food can't be hunters.

As someone from an RP server, I think that's ridiculous. It's totally absurd to think that every single human hunter started 'learning' to be a hunter scarcely a few years ago in lore-time. Just like Death Knights and Demon Hunters existed before they were playable classes.

Even IF humans were only exposed to 'formal' training and the 'formal' title of hunter during the Cataclysm- like many races were introduced to the Pandaren ways of the Monk- they would have already had those skills. In the example of the Monk, it makes perfect sense for a human to be an adept hand-to-hand fighter, and to learn to FURTHER refine their skills and have a NAME for their fighting style after learning from the Pandaren who appeared during Mists. They were ALWAYS a monk, just like your hunter, they just didn't have a formal name for it or formal training until it was 'unlocked' in lore.

I just think it makes even LESS sense to have a hunter who has only been a hunter for a few years be able to do what our characters can, as opposed to someone having honed those skills in practical ways (such as tracking and killing their own game) since they were young.

Lore is a box of scraps anyway, and it's our job as RPers to build something better than the sum of its parts out of it. When even Blizzard is willing to retcon and ignore their own lore, there's absolutely nothing wrong with not adhering to it with the sort of fanaticism that some people on RP servers do.

Not to mention, Humans are the descendants of the Vykrul, who have very clearly mastered not only ranged combat, but befriending and taming beasts as evidenced by the Vykrul in almost all locations we encounter them in. There's no reason that that knowledge of beast mastery, hunting, and combat would've been lost to them. It's purely a mechanics standpoint in terms of the class only being available with Cataclysm.

Daetur's correct, the lore is all over the place. Hell, it's sounding like monks as we know them have been a thing since at least BC. If you make a new draenei and find the monk trainer, it's a pandaren who claims he was just exploring when he heard an explosion and came to see what happened.

Do as you will and be what you want, there's always going to be a critic. Just let it slide off.

There was no big U HAVE BEEN BLESSED U R NOW HUNTERS event adding hunters to gnomes, undead and humans ICly. Sunwalkers, Tauren paladins, did have a lead up and new lore so playing one of those pre-revelation might raise a few eyebrows but we've had human rangers and ranged fighters for a very, very long time. Hell, there was even a HUMAN /ranger lord/ (a normally elven title!) up until he got sputched in the third war and turned into Nathanos Blightcaller. If anyone whines say you were a rogue, you won the roll on Thori'dal ICly, saw the Light and became ranged only.

Next time remind them that Nathanos Blightcaller was a human hunter since vanilla. Anyone can pick up a bow and become a hunter technically.

Actually, The belfs trained 100 humans in magic & nathanos was a human ranger back during the roll wars so I have no clue how they came to that conclusion.
