An acquaintance of mine and I had a discussion about Seattle's minimum wage increase being passed and he was going off about numerous things that didn't really make much sense. One of his arguments was how minimum wage is meant to be for teens still in school as extra allowance and spending money. For people to save up for post-secondary school while living comfortably under the care of family/guardians.

He completely disregarded all the people of every age trying to scratch by on minimum wage with whole families who may be for numerous reasons unable to provide for themselves or each other either temporarily or permanently. Or people trying to live on their own to escape an abusive household. Or people who struggle to keep work and find themselves job-hopping and couch-surfing (second hand experience with that, my dad had to hop and surf because his most stable job had another company buy the company he worked for out and fired all the staff and he struggled getting employment for over three years after while raising me by himself). I can honestly probably go on for another paragraph or two of the other shit he said to try and argue that their new minimum wage is ridiculously high.

I stopped replying to the conversation because it heated up extremely quickly and I wanted nothing to do with it because he was being that defiant rock blocking the way to a stable economy and he wasn't going to move an inch on it. Wasn't worth anyone's time at that point.

17min ago he just uploaded a picture saying "A new law where anyone who opposes raising the minimum wage automatically has to live on the minimum wage."

What.

The.

I'm sorry for this. But I just don't know what to do. I'm not sure if I should be upset or if I'm just being a selfish prick.

I was looking for an animated commission a while back and someone contacted me saying they could do it. Their examples were to my liking so I agreed. The price, however, was a bit much IMO for something with only a few frames.. But I was happy with the style that I agreed. Payment was to be done in gems, so I had to actually buy the gems with real money to do it. No big deal... Except for the fact it's ~$100 worth. Now, I know animating is tough.. But like I said, there are only like 5-7 frames of simple movement. Oh well, that's not the issue.

The issue is how long I have been waiting. At first, everything was fine!
My first contact with this person was Mar 04, 2014.
The price was agreed on Mar 05, 2014.
First half of payment was sent to them on Mar 07, 2014.
Base examples for me to choose from were given Mar 08, 2014.

But then...
I hadn't heard a thing. No update. That's fine, these things take time. I finally send a 'Just checking in' message to see how things were coming along and got a reply on Mar 20, 2014 saying that they hadn't had time to work on it. School and stuff. That's fine! No worries. It happens.

Then nothing. Again, that's fine. Like I said, these things take time, but I was becoming a bit curious and they had mentioned I was welcome to peek in and see how things were coming along! I get a reply to another 'Checking in' message I sent on Apr 03, 2014. Again, nothing has been done. Just occasional dinking around with some of the frames. But! That's okay. It's a big commission. Animation takes time to get it to work right!

Apr 12, 2014 I get a message saying their main computer they use for animation is starting to die and they might not be able to finish the commission.

Apr 19, 2014 I was given lineart of the animation.. But was quite a bit different than what we had agreed on. Not a big deal. They were trying new things. We were able to work around that. However, they did request more payment than what we had agreed upon, which seemed a little offensive to me. But again, everything was worked out back to what we had agreed upon in the first place.

Apr 27, 2014 I'm given an update with the fixed lineart. I send the second part of the payment.

Once again, hear nothing from them. After checking in again, I get a reply on May 13, 2014. Apparently there were some medical issues. That's fine. Again, life happens! At least they're not terribly hurt or anything and recovering!

May 18, 2014 I get a message saying their tablet broke. Life. Okay. Well at least they're alive and kicking and haven't forgotten about me! I thank them and wish them luck on getting it all back in order.

May 24, 2014 I get a message that they are back in working order with some minor tweaks to the animation to make it more realistic.

May 25, 2014 I get a message with the animation's flat color update. It's getting closer! It just needs the markings and the few minor tweaks and it's done.

June 10. 2014 Still no reply.


Looking back on this log, I suppose it's not that long to wait.. Right? I dunno. A lot of things happened to this person in such a short amount of time (unless they're just excuses... But I'm assuming they aren't!), which would make things take longer.
After getting all this down, I'm starting to think that it's not really the time I'm waiting on it (or price) that is starting to get on my nerves.. But just that I feel like unless I do a "Just checking in ;D" message to them that I won't really hear a thing about it.

To be 100% honest, the more and more I look at my rant, the more and more upset I get with MYSELF about wanting to rant about this. I'm not a good artist by any means, but I should know better. Art takes time. Animation takes time. It's difficult work and they're doing their best. What gives me the right to be upset or anxious? I don't have any right to be and I should lay off and let them do their thing.

I guess this rant turned into a rant about myself!


ALSO! If for what ever reason the person I'm commissioning reads this (I don't think they're a member here...?), please understand I am not trying to ruin you or call you out. I will not put your info or name anywhere. I will not give any info out to even hint to who you are. I don't want to ruin you. Please please don't be mad. Lol. I'm just blowing off a bit of steam.

wow I'm ranting alot today...

Firstly Bowno - Don't be angry with yourself. You paid for a service and that service hasn't been provided. 3 months is a long time for 7 frames and its a $100 worth of work. I would expect constant updates. Also don't take this the wrong way but I would not of paid in full until I had the completed work, just my paranoid perspective however. I did 2d animation at university - it would not take me that long if I sat down and worked solidly on something that was only 7 frames.

My rant - why am I competing with these ppl for higher duties? One sleeps most of the day...the team leader catches her at ALL the time...and the other has the mental capacity of a 10yr old (seriously can barely do her own job and if you tell she's made a mistake she goes and cries - at 32...)...Yes i sound like a bitch but higher duties should be given because people do a good job not cause one is having a cry cause she hasnt had a go and life is unfair, this isn't fucking high school!!

Anyway part of our roof flew off today and the powers been out for most of the day and because it's winter it's raining all the time.

Going to the hospital with a very painful blood clot is not my idea of a good time...went in at 3:30 am on Monday (which btw is a great time to go since there's no line up, lol) Got put on an IV drip (had to have it covered, needles freak me out) and given morphine for the pain, I love morphine. Had tests taken, was moved to a bed. didn't actually get a procedure to fix the clot till 11:30 pm...during the wait I decided to work on my skrelp hunt...the little fuckers couldn't even give me a sympathy shiny!!! FML!!!!
Started getting really bad pains at 8:00 pm that kept escalating till I went in for my procedure, none of the pain meds they gave me were working. Blissful knock out stuff, how i love thee.
Woke up a little after 12:00 am feeling GREAT! Got to go home for 1:00 am...hadn't eaten anything since Sunday night at 8:00 pm, even then I hadn't eaten much...got home and first thing I did was raid the fridge. Ahhh Food how I missed thee!!!!

Spent today taking it easy...still feeling drained though.

Bowno, Don't apologize. They're throwing up a ton of red flags.
It's incredibly poor form to ask for more money halfway through a commission and about as bad to "try new things" without asking if you're ok with that first. The spotty communication is also questionable.
The artists_beware Livejournal community might be helpful if you're going to commission others. They keep a list of known scammers, have a monthly positive review, and can offer advice.

Fucking so called girlfriend doesn't even bother to try and call or write or even email yesterday when it was my birthday been so long since I last talked to her yea ok I know she is going through stuff but come on now at least let me know she is ok. It is no wonder I am talking to another girl in game and flirting with her like I used to do with my I guess still girlfriend. I don't care if she can't be on WOW like she used to that never bothered me but this shit about not writing me or letting me call is bullshit. Hell I even asked for a name change to my in game name of Iowawolf cause I am starting to lose touch with her I even deleted an alt I made for her and am thinking of deleting the others soon. How the fuck can a long distance relationship survive if both aren't even fucking trying to make it work and I am starting to feel like giving up.

I can't stand Korra herself. She's a whiny bitch! I really hate those kinds of characters who have great/godlike powers and complain constantly about it! Am I meant to feel bad for her?

Still the animations nice but I can't watch a show just for that alone.

Also she said if I have to drink soda I should use a straw so the chances of it coming into contact with my teeth is lower and really I think I should cut back on my soda intake anyway.

People who push their agendas onto others have no business being in positions of power. I am a Union Delegate for my workplace so whatever the majority of members want thats what I push forward to our union - i've recently come across the most arrogant delegate who dictates what his members should think...what!!

He wrote in a post "A good delegate is not someone who says, I asked x numbers of members what they thought of the deal and some said yeah, and others said nah and others couldnt give a stuff really. A good delegate is someone who asks his members what they think and if they all dont give the correct answer he needs to work on them till they do" ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? Why is this man allowed to even be a delegate! This comment scared me alot. Yes our deal isn't great but tbh if its what the majority wants you suck it up and deal with it, you don't bully people till they think the way you want them to think! And they wonder why union membership is at record lows...cause of toolbags like this guy...

I can't ever remember what things look like. Even things I see ALL THE TIME.
It just flies right out the window.

Really helpful since I am an 'artist' (for myself). I try to draw a thing and it's like.. wtf? What am I drawing again?

I have to get reference sheets so I can draw my own damn characters. It's bloody sad.

Just the other day I tried to doodle a cloud serpent on a sheet of paper and it looked like some mutant snake. Nothing at all like a cloud serpent.

It's so damned frustrating, it makes me want to quit drawing more and more.

You might be thinking "Then you're just a bad artist lmao". Well part of that is true. I'm no great artist. But if I am LOOKING at the thing I want to draw, or have a picture, I can draw them just fine. Its the trying to draw them with memory is when it goes down the drain.

I don't need pictures for everything.
Cats are fine. I CAN draw cats without references. Domestic and wild, and wolves too.

But that's pretty much it.

Maybe I'm just not meant to be an artist at all.
