DSLR vs Point and Shoot

Unread post by AdamSavage »

Anyone here really into photography ? I'm thinking of getting a DSLR camera, as I find the pictures that come out of my point are shoot are grainy. The on I'm looking at is a Canon EOS Rebel T3. I did try it out at blacks and it seemed very easy to use. I want the sharpness and quality of DSLR. I don't care about the size of the thing really. If I just want pictures on the go, I can always use my point and shoot.

Thoughts ?

That's out of my league, at least for now. Still, gotta say it's nicely priced for a DSLR, and you can't go wrong with Canon.

I'm getting a Powershot SX160 in about a month -- those are on sale in Future Shop, but none of the stores within reasonable driving distance has them in stock. So we had to order from Sears to get a comparable deal, and even there, they're on back order. Ah well, delayed gratification...

If you're going for a T3, I would recommend just going the next step up and getting the T3i as it's a lot better than the regular T3. If you're only looking to do photography as a side thing like when you go on vacations and such, then I wouldn't drop the big bucks on a DSLR and just get a nice quality point and shoot. My fiance is a amateur photographer and we have both a nice Canon DSLR (his is like an EOS 40D or something like that) and a nice, good quality point and shoot. The point-and-shoots pictures are almost DSLR quality when taken properly (ie don't zoom into the "optical zoom" that's what makes grainy photos) and it's a lot easier to carry around places than the DSLR. If you're actually looking to get into photography as a serious hobby, that's when I would look into getting a DSLR. I'm personally looking into the Canon T3i myself for if I decide to do hobbyist photography alongside my man.

Also, be prepared to do lots of research on your camera. The DSLRs can do a huge range of functions that I'm only still covering with my fiance, how to use them, etc. If you plan on posting your photos and such, I would also recommend using a program like Photoshop to touch up photos. And be prepared to practice. A DSLR can be a lot harder to use and your beginning shots might still come out grainy, or blurry, depending on how you took the shot. A lot of my initial shots on my man's camera suck compared to some of the shots I got on my point and shoot because of the differences in the ways the cameras function.

The best advice to give would be to do your research and don't buy a camera that's out of your means. I see a lot of people who walk around using DSLRs because it's kind of the cool new thing to have (much like iPhones). They're expensive cameras that require a fair amount of maintenance and if you're not looking into getting into photography as, at the very least, a serious/semi-serious hobby, I would consider saving yourself a couple hundred dollars and just buying a nice quality point and shoot. But that's just my opinion.

Maybe a good point and shoot would do the trick, as I currently have a canon powershot SD1200 which is 4 years old already. The thing I don't like about the point and shot is how the pictures come out grainy. I've even looked @ the Canon powershot SX 16 IS. While it does take better pictures than what I have, it's still no match for the pristine quality of the DSLR pictures. At most I would be a hobbyist photography. I would take alot more pictures then I take now, specially once I get the feel for the camera.

I found this as an Example of what the T3 can take:

I know what a good DSLR can do, the EOS D line is extremely good. :P But the T3 is at least as old as your current camera and the T3 isn't nearly as nice as the T3i. The T3i has all the improvements that Canon missed with they made the T3. If you're determined to get a DSLR, I would go to Amazon and buy a new T3i over a T3.

I personally don't have any issues with my point and shoot so it might be worth it to take a look at your camera's settings. You might also be face a scratched lens or something if your pictures are coming out grainy, or as I mentioned before, it's being pushed into the optical zoom (digitally zooming kills picture quality).

I never use digital zoom. How about something like a Canon PowerShot SX50HS ?

Honestly, I can't help you much there. :( Most of the information I've given you is stuff I remembered my man telling me. The best thing I can suggest is to try and go to somewhere like Best Buy and describe to them exactly what it is you're looking for in a camera and your concerns and whatnot and they should be able to help you pick a camera out. Or if you have some other camera specialists in the area, they'd be good to go to as well. We got our point and shoot from Best Buy. I dunno if it helps, but we bought a Canon Power Shot SX230 HS. It's a year or two old, but we've been extremely happy with it. I think we use our point and shoot more than our DSLR anymore, but that's mostly because my fiance's DSLR is large, all metal, and has extra attachments on it to help take better photos (he's been paid to do weddings and stuff), and it has to be placed into a special case with its lenses and everything has to be handled delicately. The nice thing with the point and shoot is you just throw it into a fairly cheap case and go. xD

If it helps any, here's an untouched photo I took on my fiance's DSLR:

And and untouched one I took on the point and shoot:

(Yes I'm a derp and got the camera's hand cord in the shot. xD)

I found a good review of the SX50HS. It's pretty close to DSLR, and I can tell the difference still. However it's much better than what my camera could ever hope to take.

I don't know if I want something as complicated as DSLR though. That's why I'm leaning towards either of the two camera's I listed above.

That thing is not a true DSLR. And if it was I wouldn't recommend a Samsung; Nikon and Canon are the way to go there. It's some sort of weird in-between of a DSLR and point-and-shoot.

Compact System Camera is the name they use for them. The camera's I mentioned above, are not DSLR but from what I can see. They do take some pretty good shots. I like the simplicity of a point and shot, and I've started to really learn my own point shot I have now.

Here is some examples of what I was able to get out of a Canon Powershot SD1200 IS.

Hm, interesting concept I suppose.
I like my point and shoot as well. :) For most people they're more than enough until you really start getting into photography (I know I need to learn me some lighting). Your shots came out nice, Adam.
The best thing for anybody, no matter which camera they prefer, is practice, practice, practice! :D

If you're still looking around, my fiance says he would recommend the PowerShot G15 series point and shoot style cameras if you just want something small that can fit in a pocket. Otherwise he would recommend the PowerShot SX50 HS as something that still gives you similar power to a DSLR without the hassle of a DSLR.
He's been studying cameras and photography for years and he's done like weddings and other photoshoots as well. He thinks one of these two cameras would suit your needs and that your photos of that goose turned out just fine for a point and shoot and he doesn't see grainyness in them.

So I went into Best Buy to check out the G15 and the other camera. That's when I noticed an open item camera... It's the Canon Rebel T3 as an open item for $249.99.. Now I don't really need a DSLR, but at that price, it's tempting. I dunno if I should.. It is open item so who knows what was done to it. However, I did try it out and didn't seem to have any problems aside from finger prints on the lense.

It's a micro 4/3 mirrorless camera. They're kind of a midway point between an point and shoot and a full sized DSLR. On the plus side, they offer greater performance and features than a point and shoot and are less bulky than a DSLR. I don't know about the NX100, but my OM-D can fit into a jacket pocket (or even 'looser' type pants pockets such as on dress pants or khakis) if you have a pancake lens on it. On the down side, they're more expensive and the lenses for them rival the price of DSLR lenses.

For indoor actions shots, I go with one of my DSLRs (usually my old Nikon D5000) or the OM-D. It's just far easier to set them up to perform for stuff like indoor sports in arenas.

I'm a professional photographer, and I always tell people to buy the camera that feels the best. Product names such a canon and nikon are more expensive due to the fact that they lead the photography market for a really long time. I have never used a canon or nikon. I use a sony dslr. When you buy a camera always go for what you want in the camera not the name or the price. You need to look at the megapixel size and the settings it has so you can use it to keep from getting super grainy pictures. Its all about the settings that you take a shot in. I have had this discussion with so many people. I am signed full time to a gallery and everytime we have a show people are always surprised that my pictures are not taken with either a canon or nikon. So funny that people think a name can make your pictures better. It takes practice with your camera, not every shot is perfect. I can take up to 900 pictures in one day trying to get that perfect shot and have only say 50 of them be close or spot on. Here is my photography page so you can see my work. https://www.facebook.com/JulieShanahanPhotography
Dslr cameras are bulky and definitely not for the on the go person that wants to just point and shoot. Just depends on what you want to do.

True, it all comes down to what feels best and works best for you. My main reason for buying a new camera is to do blow ups of old family pictures, but I've been doing great with my son's Kodak at 12mp.

Sony does get favourable reviews on photographyblog.com which is where I did comparisons. Speaking of pros, though, the real pro in my family warned against being tempted by Fujitsu DSLRS in the same price range as Canon point-and-shoots because their quality doesn't hold up.
