Special Pets (functional)

Unread post by skribs »

There exists a database of pets with special looks, or pets that are more difficult to tame.

Are there plans to put in an option to search by attack speed or some other bonus (i.e. Lupos)?

There was a very special pet on vanilla: Lupus, a rare worg in Duskwood.

What made him special was that his attacks were SHADOW DAMAGE instead of physical.

Of those pets you don't have attack speeds, I believe Araga and the Frostwolf were 1.5 attack speed. The Frostwolf was also notable because it's 240% chase speed.

Elite pets had more hp and armor when tamed too if I rember correctly. Only golden elites i think. . Not silver rares .. which I don't remember if it was even a thing?

Silver elite rares did indeed exist back then. They were just, well, rare.

As for the increased hp and armor I don't remember they having more compared to ''normal'' pets.

I tracked down records of the attack speeds of another 16 Classic pets. That just leaves 23 for which I have no reliable record. See:
http://www.wow-petopia.com/classic/atta ... ed_Unknown

There are some obscure pages that do mention attack speeds for these pets, but I've found them to be unreliable - some just filled in a default '2.0' for anything they didn't have specific data on.

Regarding Lupos - he did indeed do shadow damage in Vanilla, but that was fixed in 1.9 so he shouldn't be doing that in Classic.

Quick question.

I noticed that there was some information posted saying that pets did the same damage regardless of attack speed. I wonder if that is true though.

Surely with faster attack speed there would be more chances to get a critical strike to increase the uptime of Frenzy (beastmaster talent).

Blackfathom Deeps, and yes, that turtle had more HP and was thus highly sought after.
Many elites were better in vanilla. Think they changed it in Wrath.

Does anyone know which patch removed Lupos' shadow damage and equalized pet attack speed? I've read that the Classic servers will be sitting (balance-wise) at patch 1.12 (Drums of War), and am trying to find out where we stand with pets, then.

I believe it was 1.6 that normalized pets? Attack speeds might not be the exact same across the board, but the DPS will be roughly the same regardless. I don't think any pets have unique move speeds anymore (Mazzranache) and nothing crazy like extra resistances or Lupos' shadow damage.

Lupos was fixed in 1.9, so no shadow wolf for Classic.

Attack speed was standardized in 2.0, I think. We should almost certainly see variable speeds in Classic, as I know they were checking our data on them :)

I saw a hunter with Lupos today and asked about shadow damage. We went outside of Stormwind to test it, and our battle logs said nothing about him dealing shadow damage all 5 times we had him attack something. :C

Siggy under construction!

Pets within a family that vary in attack speed also vary in damage. That is, cats (for instance) will do a certain amount of dps regardless. If you have a faster cat it will do less damage per attack. However speed does give you more chances to crit per second and really messes with casters.

So faster attack speed = more crits = more DPS.

No, because lower attack speed = bigger base damage per attack = bigger crits = the same dps. What the faster attack speed gives you is more crits, which gives you more chances to proc Frenzy, which is increased attack speed without a damage penalty, which is more dps.
