Problems with Curse/AddOns?

Unread post by Shade »

I use the Curse Client to manage the addons that I use. I don't use many but the ones I usually have are:

Recount
Deadly Boss Mods
Omen
Gatherer2
NPCScan and NPCScan Overlay
Bartender4

So I got a message in game from DBM telling me I needed to update it. Today I went in to do so and got a message telling me to update my Curse Client. Did so-now the dang thing is 'unable to manage' the files of every addon that I have. Uninstalled it and tried again, got the same message.

It makes me worried if something is wrong, so I've gone through and uninstalled Curse and deleted all the addons that I have for now, I'll just play without addons at all I guess for a bit (I'm getting kinda used to it in Beta anyways). But has anyone else had this problem recently using the client?

(and let me know if I need to move this to another place in the forums)

Well, I use Curse on a Mac and they say that it is in their alpha beta, so it could be buggy.

Really, really buggy.

Went through and manually installed my addons, without using the curse client. It is okay to use addons without this client right? Its the only way I've every used addons, so I am not sure that I am doing this right.

The Curse Client is really problematic, though. A lot of people have ended up with viruses and keyloggers from using the Curse Client, so I mostly recommend people not use it. You don't have to use the Curse Client to use the addons. Just install the addons by hand.

*nod* I know many people use it without issue, but I was always wary after that rash of hackings and malware that came with it a while back. I've always installed addons by hand. It might take a few more moments, but I don't find it to be a hassle at all, especially since I'm used to it.

Thank you guys! I just have always used Curse to put my addons into the game, so I wasn't even aware that you could install them without it until I really got around to digging to figure it out. It wasn't as hard as I thought, but I was concerned that Curse was needed to make them run properly. >_<

Same here, I manually install them only as needed. Even if there's a newer version of an addon I'm using, as long as it's functioning without problems I generally won't bother updating it. Most of the simpler ones will continue functioning fine even through content patches if you just update the interface number in the toc files.

Same here.

In re: upgrading existing addons - pretty much just recount, because otherwise it can sometimes turn into a lag-causer after a new game patch. Not sure if it's actually clocked higher memory usage per se, I just know that after downloading and installing the new version, the lag goes away. :)

I also have a couple addons that are (or were when I last checked) no longer supported, which I've taken over maintenance of (bugmenot and emotereply).

Otherwise I'm lazy and use outdated version, even where I shouldn't be, such as with npc_scan...

Only people who use a corrupted client have this issue. The client and site itself are fine but if you download it off a shady site, it's going to happen. There are plenty of scam sites out there posing as the real site and it's easy to fall for it if you're not careful. The client only downloads lua files which cannot be used as an infection route.

Or people who let it auto update addons before curse can verify the files when things update. (Also my boyfriend downloaded the client from them and it seems the client was the source of his security breach)

It only downloads lua files (no executables or other methods of infection) so I don't know how he got infected from it but maybe it was possible in some way, though I've never heard or seen anyone who was truly infected from the official curse client I'm no expert on it either.

When he called up the blizz CS line to get restoration going they told him it was the client, not the addons, that was his likely issue. He hadn't had any problems with accounts on any game/forum(he hardly registers for forums ever, let alone post on them) prior to the installation of the client. And he is more anal than I am about running virus checkers and whatnot. -shrug-

They claim the client is just bad news overall. I've seen blues mention it before. IMO its just that people without authenticators think the client is infallable (probably spelled that wrong lol) and let it do whatever it wants (auto updates etc). :/
