PSA for Seasonal Affective Disorder and light therapy

Unread post by Teigan »

Well, winter is coming in the northern hemisphere of the world. For people with Seasonal Affective Disorder, this is not good news. And the effects of it actually start as early as the end of August. As someone who struggles with this, I know the "winter blues" can be pretty extreme. So, light therapy! I was very skeptical of this, but it really, really, really helps. Even if you just have a mild case of winter blues, it would probably help. There are alot of lightboxes for sale. Some are good. Some are worthless. All of them depend on your budget. While getting the "professional" kind is probably the best, you'd have to be fairly well off to get one. So, take a look. If it produces 10,000-lux it will probably work. I have this dinky little plastic thing with LEDs, but it's produces 10,000 lux and works quite well for me. And it was dirt cheap.

That being said...ask your doctor/mental health professional first and read up on it. As harmless as light seems, it can aggravate some conditions.

Oh, and light therapy is also useful for things like shift work and jet lag.

As someone who is Bipolar I would like to suggest a Happy Light, looks like this:

It really helps me, the big ones are kinda expensive but worth it. They simulate natural sunlight and it doesn't really bother me (I hate harsh light, never leave the hose without a hat). Hope that helps someone

My husband always has trouble with the winter blues, esp once Christmas is past. I may just have to check into these.

my Hubby suffers from S.A.D as well and we have a light for him. They really do help, as well as making sure he takes his daily dose of Vitamin D (chocolate flavored chewables XD )

I cry inside every day, as common courtesy withers away. Are you part of the problem or will you help it grow?

make sure to start treatment early, don't wait for the blues to start, especially if his don't start until after Christmas. the important thing is early detection and early treatment.
