as always, I'm trying to read too many books at once:
Dawidziak's Mystery of Mysteries "the death and life of Edgar Allan Poe", biography
Jones' Howl's Moving Castle, which inspired Miyazaki's anime
Anderson's Paul of Dune--wasn't going to read this one, but parts of it may end up in the third Dune film? (takes place btwn Dune and Dune Messiah)
Nayler's Mountain in the Sea, award-winning novel about an intelligent octopus community

Just finished Spufford's Cahokia Jazz--alt history of the USA with a Native American city and state on the Mississippi river *recommended

I just finished reading the four stories (2 novellas, 1 short story, and a novel) by P. Djeli Clark, set in what is informally known as the "Dead Djinn Universe". He's a brilliant writer, creating very original urban kinda-steampunk-adjacent fantasy.

The books are set in an alternate Cairo at the start of the 20th century. 50 years prior to the story, an event happened that weakened the gap between magical realms and ours, resulting in Djinn and other supernatural beings crossing into our world, and Egypt becoming an advanced and progressive early 20th century power with the aid of migrating djinn. The stories are centred on an agency that investigates problems and magical and alchemical nature, in particular one young female agent who is something of an eccentric and thoroughly enjoyable main character. If you're after speculative fiction that has a focus outside of Europe and North America, chiefly on north African customs and myths, as well as having queer themes, this is a brilliant series.

In order, the stories and novel are: 'A Dead Djinn in Cairo' (short story), 'The Angel of Khan el-Khalili' (short story available online, here), 'The Haunting of Tram Car 015' (novella), and 'A Master of Djinn' (his first novel).

I'm now reading 'The Saint of Bright Doors' by Vajra Chandrasekera. It's so far altogether unique and wonderful.
