A different approach to taming rares

Unread post by Kro »

Some people think this is a stupid method, but it worked for me and I'm happy.

If you're desperate to tame a rare mob and you also happen to have a bit of money to spare, try transferring to a very low-population realm and camping there for a few days. I did this and got Skoll the moment I logged back in near one of his spawn points. On the third day before I transferred back, I found Skoll again. I wanted to tell someone, but Dalaran was barren at 4am and there wasn't a single hint of life in Storm Peaks. After literally half an hour of waiting to see if any hunters were around, I decided to kill Skoll with Skoll.

Of course I regret doing this now.
...But at the very least it shows how a temporary server switch can drastically increase your chances of taming that rare mob you've been after for months.

As a side note, I also managed to kill quite a few Northrend rare spawns while I was on the low-pop server. If I had stayed, I would've gotten the Frostbitten achievement in no time. :headbang:

Aww I wish I could do this. I just can't justify the cost... :( I'd totally be tempted to stay and look for TLPD...

Grats on the tame! :)

Yea, that always bugged me. My hunter and my warlock are on different servers. My warlock regularly stumbled across Loque AND Gondria while my hunter was searching for them. It wasn't until months later that I found Gondria, and then almost a year later for Loque.

Once I hit higher levels it may just be worth the extra monies. But right now my highest toon doesn't have full BM spec so it just wouldn't be worth it I don't think.
But great idea to keep in mind for future.

To be honest it isn't worth it imo, as it just makes the tame feel cheaper. I'd only do this if, and I mean if, I had the cash to spare and if I got grief while trying to tame Krush on Rosa when/if Aria and Gex get their priest n shammy up to 80- and got all the crap I need for the tame.

But then it'd only be for that reason alone- if everything else kept failing.

It doesn't sound "stupid" to me. If you have the extra money to do it, then I think it's certainly a good idea.

But I has no money... or very little...

I think it makes as much sense as spending the WoW time camping... Either way you're spending the money on WoW to get a rare. *shrug*

That's the same argument I used with my husband when I wanted to transfer characters for my Elite Testing Cadre. "I can pay the money to transfer 5 characters, or I can spend X hours getting new characters to levels 18, 19, 22, 29, and 43 -- levels that those 5 characters already have. And if I am leveling, I won't be working on paid contracts."

He saw the light pretty fast. ;)

Haha. Nice negotiation! :) It's true though - if I tally up all the time I've spent camping Skoll and Loque, I could have probably paid for the transfer to a low pop realm AND back a few times over...

For me, this method is straight out. I have no cash.

Or maybe...
