You might be going "da hell? What are you smoking and where can I get some" but it's true!

See in the Auckland Winter gardens this weekend had a very special flower bloom a Amorphophallus titanum or "Corpse flower".
They only knew it was going to bloom 11 days ago! See they take something along the lines of 7 to 10 years to bloom. But they could bloom after that in like 2 or 13 or never!

It's pretty cool tho first one to bloom in New Zealand and one of the few to bloom in a green house!

I'm not a huge plant person but it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity kind of thing. It was very large too. A couple meters at least!

Yeah it also smelled like something crawled up and died in it too XD Very fitting name

That's a huge and smelly flower!

As soon as I read the title I knew what kind of flower it would be ^^ Really awesome that you got to see/smell it!!!

It indeed was huge and smelly.I knew it was going to be big but not that big! It was really awesome to see in real life, I mean I've seen the David Attenborough show where he's by one but seeing it yourself is not the same it's way cooler.

I would not recommend seeing one if you vomit when you smell bad things

Wow o.O I have never seen nor heard of that thing. It looks really cool. Never seen such a massive, weird looking flower before. This is what I love about petopia- people share cool little highlights like this.

Wow, that's different! When I saw the subject I thought it was going to be a Rafflesia, but this one seems to be just as big, and way taller.

Also love that they put pitcher plants just above it, to get any flies and bugs that make it in.

I love those. That's so cool you got to see one in person I'll have to let my mate in AKL know there's one there flowering.

I kept bumping my head into those plants They where everywhere in that greenhouse! Big ones and small ones. (bound to be more then one type I think)

I don't think the flower lasts that long so I hope your mate sees it!


Oh don't know if you guys know but see in the photo of the sign that big green tree with the wire around it? That's another one of those flowers! It's not a tree at all but one giant leaf!

So it's flowering again. I'm going to go tomorrow and see it again. I'll fix those photos too.

Awesome. Enjoy The greenhouse will be nice in winter too.

Melbourne RBG has a two or three of them apparently and they had one flower earlier this year (March), so I finally got to see it in person. It was pretty amazing! Funny how much it almost feels fake, like it's so strange it just can't be real.

Yeah I agree on that feeling. Like it's some prop from a 60's sci fi movie.

Those things are neat.

Opps I forgot to post them. As it bloomed in winter it was not that big.

I took more pics of other plants and there was a cool chillie display I can put them up if you'd like.
