Saturo's hunt

Unread post by Saturo »

Been wanting to do this for a while now. I mean, everyone else is doing it! My first fanfic, and it turned out a bit messier than I had planned.
It supposedly tells the story of Saturo, Gnome of the Horde.
---------------------------------------------------------
The Gnome walked slowly on the beach, looking for beast noble enough to be her pet. She had been at it for a good week or so, and by now the monotony of it had gotten to her. She couldn’t help but reminisce about her early days of hunting. Most wouldn’t consider it long ago, it was infact just a few months ago, but Gnomes are odd in that way.
---------------------------------------------------------
When she had told the others back in Gnomeregan, they had laughed, and seeing that the Gnomish culture isn’t a culture very accepting of Hunters, she had left Gnomeregan, and set out to find her place in the world. Just as well, she thought now, the dwarves had spoken of a disaster when she arrived in Ironforge. She had tried to get more information about it, but it had proven difficult, almost impossible. All she could hear was something about Troggs, and she had never heard of such creatures earlier. She didn’t care much however, they had outright laughed at her! She couldn’t help but feel a bit sad now, however. She should have been there, to aid the others, rather than running away. But then again… Not going back had been her most difficult decision yet, and she still wasn’t sure she had done the right thing.

She had looked around in Ironforge for hours when she overheard a discussion some drunk-looking dwarves had had regarding “Tha’ great beast”. She heard one of them say something, followed by excited exclaims by the others, and one of them taking up a heavy-looking blunderbuss. She realized what the discussion was about, and tried to infiltrate the group, with mediocre results. (“Ye’re a Gnome, ya’re too small ta’ be handlin’ heavy guns like these!”) After trying to convince them that she was infact a great marksman, she decided to leave them alone. They seemed to be more concerned about what loot they could bring home from their hunting trips, and not about the connection with nature she was concerned with. She realized that Ironforge was not the city to look for like minded individuals in, and she left, to go find a sailor able to bring her over the great sea, to Darnassus.
She had travelled to Booty Bay, and was entrenched in heavy discussions with a Goblin privateer about getting a space on her boat, when she heard some Tauren discussing “That excellent shot I had actually hit with!”, and she immediately thought that this might be it. She decided not to try to talk to them, remembering her failure back in Ironforge. The privateer said something, and got annoyed when she didn’t seem to be paying attention. “You’re listening to them, aren’t you?”. She nodded, and he said “You don’t want with them to do, last week they stole my loot!”. “Ah, these are pirates”, she thought, and realized that she had never been much of a criminal. Nope, this isn’t right either, she thought disappointedly.

After some days of rough sailing, and an attempted piracy, she ended up ship wrecked on the shores near Auberdine, and decided to try and walk to the elven port. Shuddering, she looked around. The woods were dark, and ominous roars could be heard from inside them. She looked around a bit, and decided to run. She ran for a few minutes, when suddenly she could hear splashes and slithering sounds behind her. She looked around quickly, and saw some serpents following her. No, not serpents… They were… They looked humanoid, and they were wielding large tridents over their heads. Their long tails were quickly slithering over the sand. They seemed relatively intelligent, and she decided to try to tell them that she isn’t here to rob their temples, despite the pirate outfit she had bought in Booty Bay.

She survived with about two inches between the trident one of them had thrown at her and her head. She quickly turned around, and ran quicker than she thought she was able to.
“So much for hospitality!”, she yelled at them as she ran.
A loud roar, and the sound of hissing voices panicking, she turned around. A large, white bear had attacked the serpent-men, and recognizing the moment, she took up her gun and started shooting wildly. She had never gotten any real training in the use of her gun, and she missed most of her shots. The bear however seemed well trained, and it attacked the serpents with deadly proficiency. Soon, they had all keeled over, and the bear slowly walked up to her. She looked at it, a little frightened. This bear was deadly! What would stop it from killing her too!? It sniffed her hand, and then just stood there. Slowly, she patted it, and noticed the bear’s clear, blue eyes. It looked kindly on her, and then gave out a slight roar and started walking away, slowly. It walked down the coast, and Saturo was never one to stay behind, just to avoid something. She walked next to it, keeping the same pace. She was used to running, even while she just walked. It always seemed like the larger races ignored her need to run, while they just walked. Most Gnomes wouldn’t say anything, and Saturo had never done so either. She just walked quickly next to the bear, and began thinking of it as her friend, her pet. Maybe she wouldn’t need to go to Darnassus, maybe she could just stay here with this bear? She had begun rubbing the thought into her mind, when they reached Auberdine. The bear however seemed to have other plans, as it roared and charged headfirst into the city. She could hear it run into one of the houses, and she now realized why she hadn’t noticed the town earlier, it hadn’t been very far away. The houses were built inside trees! She realized that the elves had an uncanny connection with the wilds, and proceeded to walk towards the dock. Her bear friend came out of a house, followed by an elf who seemed to be wondering where the bear was walking. The bear stopped right in front of Saturo, and licked her over her whole face with its huge tongue.
“Eww…”, she said, and the elf seemed surprised, not noticing the Gnome right in front of his feet. He looked down, and gave her a surprised stare, before quickly hiding it.
“Are you the one Grimclaw found?”, he asked, looking down at Saturo.
“Yes”, she answered, and quickly followed with “I assume you’re the one who trained him?”
They continued to talk a bit, and Saturo got a bit disappointed, seeing as how the bear already had a master. The elf, after hearing what the gnome was hunting for, arranged for her to sail to Teldrassil the other day.

Early in the morning she arrives in a small village at the roots of the great tree. Seeing little activity, she decides to try and find an inn to spend the day. She won’t have a lot of luck finding any elf to talk with during the day, so she might as well adopt the local behavior while she’s spending the time here.
The next day, she decides to find the hunters. The local populace doesn’t seem too happy with having a visiting Gnome, and keep their distance. Saturo felt alienated by this, and decides to get what she wants and then leave. Finding the rangers, she asks for some instructions in becoming a hunter. She gets annoyed by the preaching nature of her trainer, he’s constantly talking about how the Hunters are there to maintain balance in nature.
“When will I get to hunt then?”, she asks, running out of patience.
The trainer seems infuriated, and quickly says something in Darnassian. Certain that it’s an insult, Saturo leaves. These hippies can do their own thing, she thought, as she walked to get a hippogryph to fly her to Auberdine so she can make her way home. “This is impossible!”, she thought as she was flying. She thought of the Orcish community in Durotar, and she knows that there are Hunters there. She realizes that it’s quite a walk, and decides to get a mount. The elves had tamed the local sabers, the dwarves had a connection with the Rams of the mountains, and the humans rode warhorses, as they had always done. Gnomes however, had a sort of rite of passage, which was to construct a mechanostrider. She had built the basic framework, and already had an engine connected. If she tried long and hard she could get the machine to walk slowly. This was as far as most got, and it was more than enough to pass. If you wished to become a true engineer, however, you would have to accomplish something greater. She actually had the machine with her, it was in her luggage, and most of that was still in the wreckage of the boat she had gotten to darkshore on.

The hippogryph landed swiftly, as close to the wreckage as she could get it to fly, and it flew away as she jumped off of it. She found her strider, and started attaching various parts she found lying around, it turned into a much larger creation, and in the end it was just as swift as the ones made by the artisans in Gnomeregan. She was proud, and, pressing down on the pedals, she raced forwards, on trough the dark woods, on the rather small path. She soared on, and quickly reached another region of woods, known as Ashenvale. The strider ran out of fuel shortly after the town Astranaar, and she had to walk the rest of the way. In the distance, she could see sandy mountains, and she knew that she was close now. As she walked, she thought of how she should befriend the Orcs. She had heard that the new Horde wasn’t one to turn down potential allies, so she thought long and hard about how she should introduce herself as an ally. Her people were officially part of the alliance, and it would be very hard for her to make them realize that she wasn’t a spy. The problem seemed to be without an easy answer, and she lost herself in her thoughts as she walked.

Suddenly, she could hear something sneaking around, and she quickly looked around. Something was stalking her! She thought she had heard ruffling in the leaves and such earlier, but she didn’t realize that it might not have just been the wind blowing around.
“Who’s the…”, she begins, but is interrupted as she is lift up by her cloak. An Orcish face is looking at her, studying the small Gnome intensely.
Saturo is about to say something, when the Orc speaks, “Gnome, is it folly or stupidity that has brought you here?”
She is about to respond, when the Orc speaks again, “The warchief will decide on your fate.”.

The Orc carries her all the way to Orgrimmar, which was surprisingly close. Saturo tries to talk, in order to get away, but the Orc doesn’t respond. The guards and populace are surprised when they see what the scout is carrying. Why is he carrying such a talkative gnome?
The two reach a larger building, and the scout says something in Orcish. The guard responds with a quick phrase, “Dabu” and opens the gate. Saturo feels embarrassed as she is carried to an Orc in an obviously high position, but just then the scout releases his hold of her cloak, and she falls down to the floor.
“This Gnome was found walking along the border of the Barrens and that of Ashenvale.”’

---------------------------------------------------------

It had taken a few months for the Orcs to begin to trust her, but she had received it in the end.
And now, walking along the beach, she reflected about whether or not she had made the right decisions.
Hearing the chirping of a crab behind her, she spotted a large, red crab crawling around. All the time she had spent in the Horde, their biggest concern about her had been her diminutive size, and spotting this huge crab, a thought crossed her mind. She remembered something a troll had told her;
“Joo gnomes be da’ smallest creatures in da’ world, and still it be joo that make de’ largest machines, mon.”
Back then she was pretty sure it had just been a joke, but it seemed fitting that she had the largest of the crabs as a pet.
She retrieved a rather large fish that she had fished up earlier, and the crab, spotting this, crawled over to her and took it in his larger pincer. As the crab was eating the fish, she could feel the bond between them forming. The crab was looking friendlier now, so she patted it over the shell. It didn’t seem to notice, and all she achieved with it was getting her hand slimy. Regardless, the bond had formed, and she had her pet now, at last. Looking out over the sea, she wondered what the world had in store for her next, and she could hear the crab chirping next to her, it was entirely friendly now, and she knew that this pet was now her closest friend, as the bond between the hunter and the pet is the strongest in the world.

And that is how Saturo tamed her pet, Crab.
