I'm at 479 fiendish leather (outside of my bank, so from the talbuks I've killed this morning). Each talbuk gives 2-3 leather. I've skinned no other beasts. Assuming 3 leather per talbuk, that's about 160 kills. And nothing. On top of the many many kills I've made before today.

So we tame while they are eating, essentially?

I have been killing talbuk all over Krokuun for over an hour and have nothing to show for it still. This is very RNG-y.
