Secrets are fun and all, and I love puzzles. However, this was something we wanted at launch (or, I did, I'm sure I'm not alone though) and we get a super hidden item with no useful hints as to it's acquisition. =\ I'm sort of disappointed.

You aren't going to be forced to use any pet. Tenacity, Ferocity, and Cunning will all have equal damage, health, and armor. The difference is spec abilities, which aren't major game changer. The worry (for me, anyway) isn't that cunning will do less DPS than ferocity, or tenacity can't be used for threat reasons. Locked specs means if you want to use your favourite pet, who is now tenacity, but your raid group wants you to bring a cunning, you can't use that pet. It's just a huge step b...
