Wolf is the general best DPS pet. Safest bet in most cases.

If you're BM, and your groups/raids don't mind the devilsaur, you could use that and call it a day too.

If the raptor is your thing, go for it.

All in all, the difference is so small, it probably isn't that big an issue.

Yeah, it looks like Blizz isn't focusing on a lot if little issues with hunters. For the most part, they try to keep PvE and PvP balanced, along with gear scaling and such. Hopefully in Cataclysm they'll remake the hunter class, so to speak. With the whole "no mana just focus" deal for hun...

Exotics pretty much are looks, and special skills. But really, the skills don't come in too handy for PvE. Soloing, yeah I can see that maybe. PvP there are some interesting options, but nothing groundbreaking. But who out there saw King Krush and didn't think "I want him as my poochy! :o "

Yeah, spirit strike does look better. And yeah, spirit beasts are just a pain to find and tame. The new one would almost be impossible.
