Just noticed this on wow Insider.

The Cataclysm world event is beginning. Watch for up to the minute coverage here on WoW Insider as we cover the events.

1:30pm EDT - We're getting several reports in that elementals and cultists are attacking Azeroth.
1:37pm EDT - It looks like there are rifts that open in various zones in Azeroth, and elementals spawn. You kill the elementals, and get some special stuff. More coming in shortly.
1:40pm EDT - There are quest people you can talk to in Orgrimmar outside the bank if you're horde.

There was a quest person outside the bank in Ironforge. At least I think it was related to this.

Seems there is an achievement available by killing elemental rifts throughout the world. Must kill one of fire, water, earth, and air within 1 hour I believe to get the achiev.

This is the first phase of the elemental invasion event. Blizz has said there will be 4 phases. Phase 1 to 3 are outlined at wowpedia dot com.

It doesn't have to be within 1 hour (thankfully - they only spawn once an hour and stay up for a mere 10minutes!), I got my achievement after about three hours of camping rift spawn points.

I got my achievement this morning in about 15 minutes. I went to Outland and found it unoccupied and all the rifts I could want. x)

Oh excellent! I wasn't sure whether you'd get the achievement unless you were killing the "right" level mobs for it. Did you get the quest from the [Mysterious Device] left behind?

No, I think the quest is only from level-appropriate elementals. But I was more concerned about the achievement. ^^

One thing that makes zero sense to me... why are Azeroth elementals appearing on Draenor and causing havoc? bit of a blunder there if you ask me

haha! Yeah I didn't even think of that. Hmmm perhaps its because Outlands is now linked to Azeroth through the dark portal? Not sure their logic here, but oh well. Don't think much else will be happening in Outlands for some time anyways. Always nice to have a reason to visit the place.

This is very much a non-RP reason, but....

Players in the level 61-67 range wouldn't have anywhere else to go that's level-appropriate for the daily/achie. Hence, rifts in Outland.

In case you are interested, here's a map of the Outland elementals. I've been unable to find one of Azeroth, though. :(

I stumbled upon some earth ones in Loch Modan last night.

I ran across some rifting earth elementals at the southern side of Kargath in the Badlands, and fire elementals just north of the Blackrock entrance in Searing Gorge.

Is there any loot in this, or is it just for achievements? Yes I am completely materialistic.

No loot from the Earth ones, but they did leave behind a device that I turned in for a quest and xp.

Wait, you can kill non-level-appropriate elementals for the achivement?!

I am so sick of wading through hordes of people in Northrend.

Excellent. I think I'll pop over to Outlands on my 80s and get their achievements at the top of the hour. =D

Got my achievement first day (tuesday for me).

You need to be present when the rift dies to be able to loot... but you dont even have to hit anything to get the buff. I was AFK getting dinner when the water rift spawned. The other 10+ players in the area killed everythign but i still got the buff and therefore it counted for the achievement.

To get the daily quest you must kill ones that are apropriate to your level - that means level 80's must be in northrend. The rift drops a mysterious object that you can loot and hand in to the earthen ring guys in Org/ IF. You can get the other buffs for the achievemnt from lower level rifts elsewhere.

Wowhead has a huge list in the comments on their writup for this. It seems to be accurate as far as my guild and I can see but it was far from a complete list.

The achievement should also be available in another 2? weeks, when the seriously tough elementals start appearing in ORG, TB, IF and SW. Low level characters had better get the achievement done now becasue these next wave of elementals are TOUGH.
