So I'm looking into a new server...

Unread post by Feath3r »

I've been thinking really hard about starting an alt on another server but all the numbers and research on the net won't help if no one mentions certain things. (like the pricing on the auction house being horrifically high low level or Crossroads being closed on certain days because of bored Alliance)

- I'm hoping to avoid pvp because I'm paranoid enough as it is doing escort and pvp quests, I'd hate to be that way all the time
- I'll probably create a Horde toon.
- I'd like to avoid servers were the population imbalance is too high either direction unless it doesn't really effect my leveling or my ability to gather materials for professions.
- Non-High population servers would be nice, but if you make a good argument for it, I'll probably try it out.

So, any suggestions? :D

My suggestion would be to pick a server in a time zone and at a data center you want (the closer the center, the less laggy you'll be). Then create a lvl 1 and run to Org and *interview* trade while you browse the AH. It's tedious, but well worth the effort.

Nesingwary? :D Seriously, it seems solid horde side. (No idea about alli-side.) Only thing I'll say is, low level gear is waaaaay overpriced on AH. It's an issue if you like to buy upgrades, but if you're like me and figure it'll come with quest rewards and dungeon drops, then you can make a pretty penny.

I really don't know anything about the alliance side, but I think the population balance favours horde. I've no problem leveling my gathering profs.

Nesingwary is pve and what, CST I think? Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Bonus: <Petopians> is horde side and <Ominous Latin Name> is alliance side - our two forum US guilds.

-shrugs- If you like RP, you could try my server, Wyrmrest Accord. Friendly, not too much of a faction imbalance (Horde and Alliance are about even), there is a bit of world PvP, but people here don't seem to care much about PvP in general. We do have low raid progression (We're an RP server after all), but there usually are a good amount people who will help you out.

However, we are stuck in Emberstorm, which is known to have problems. D:

Another thing to consider or not... do you want to raid eventually? If so, higher-pop servers are generally better, as there are more people to drive progression. If you don't want to raid, then the exact opposite might be better, lower-pop servers will give you less crowding for questing and taming those rares.

Stay away from Altar of storms (US) <.< you will hate it.
overrun by horde, bored 80`s often hunting lowbies. High Ah prices, LOADS of crap on city general chat.
Horde tend to spam that good old Legendary sword.

Trade chat is trade chat no matter which server you're on. Its Gabriel's Unified Theory of Internet Idiocy (I'm paraphrasing): Anonymity + Audience = Complete Idiot.

Anyways, Sisters of Elune is a low-population, Horde-dominant RP server. The population swings only moderately in favour of the Horde, and that will likely change after Cata when everyone makes their worgens. AH prices fluctuate for resources but gear holds pretty steady. Raid progression, as it is an RP server, is not great though there are a few decent raiding guilds on either side, namely <Apples> and <We Gem Skill> for the Horde, and <We Happy Few> and <Zen> on the Alliance. A large number of RP guild exist, though it takes a bit of trial and error to find a good one.

The PvP aspect is kept largely to the battlegrounds, though again as on any server, you always find one jerk who wants to ruin your fun sooner of later. Crossroads comes under attack now and then though its not as bad as Zangarmarsh (bad server, don't go!) but then so does Goldshire so it balances out. Nazthori, our resident warmonger, has left WoW again, so if you are planning on rolling Alliance, no more 150-man For the Horde raids!

My server probably isn't the kind of server you're looking for, but I'll give you a brief list of how life is like on Area 52:

1) Excessively high Horde population (to the point they are trying to "entice" some of us off via free transfers to whatever server they want to put them on).

2) Leveling is pretty decent despite the amount of people on the server. In fact, that makes leveling via quests a plus because you're more likely to find people for the really hard ones you need a group for.

3) Gathering materials via Mining and Herbalism is fairly easy at low levels, but there's competition once you get into the WotLK stuff. I've never had problems with Mining except on weekends when more people are out gathering Saronite in Sholazar Basin.

4) Auction House prices for low level stuff is expensive. This is good if you plan on selling gathered materials in the AH, but bad if you plan on regularly buying materials for any crafting professions.

5) There are tons of PUG raids going on at all hours of the day, and many are quite successful more often than not. However, PUG organizers use Gearscore very heavily on this server as a starting point. Typically, PUG organizers will recruit by saying something like "Starting ICC 10, 5200 GS minimum, come to portals for gear check". Basically, that means they won't even look at you unless you have at least a 5200 GS, and when they do look you over, they expect you to be wearing appropriate stuff for your class/role, and also have it gemmed/enchanted properly.

Apparently Apples is no longer a hard core guild. A large portion of their raiders left and formed their own guild, though, my "contact" didn't mention the new guild name. However, another raiding guild to look for is Twitch. Have two friends in it, and they apparently downed the Lich King recently. Though, I have to admit, I have no idea what other guilds have done so... But basically, we're a slow raiding server. I think we're in the bottom ten when it comes to raid progression. Also, a LOT of guilds are having issues with attendance. I think there is a lull right now, before Cataclysm.

Wintergrasp is pretty much owned by the Horde on Sisters of Elune. They should just start calling it: Hordegrasp or something. ;)

Generally it is a friendly server, though there are some jerks, as there will always be on any server. I do think though, as a low level character, you won't have any problems leveling your various tradeskills. At level 80 however, gathering saronite or titanium is a royal pain in the rear.

Good luck on finding your new server!

I concur with what has been said of Sisters of Elune.

Alas, all 10 toons on Sisters of Elune are Alliance. Seems that the Alliance side doesn't want to be bothered much with PvP. The Alliance side lost many PvP'ers with the Faction change ability.

I would say that Alliance wins in Wintergrasp about 5% of the time (and that usually happens when a large strong raiding guild decides it's time to run VOA for the week). Other than that, Alliance seem to rarely get 25 in WG fights. Tenacity of 8-12 is just not good. I will be glad with the changes coming to limit numbers at 25 until both sides have 25, at which point the largest number difference will be 1 more than the opposing faction.

I have no resilience gear of any kind, save some BoA items used for leveling my lower toons (once I get my raiding gear all set, then I will see about filling out some PvP gear - so I can get past being 1-2 shotted .... both me and my pet need Plate, hehe)

My toons are in a small guild and we are joined with five other small guilds and we run ICC25 on weekends. We took down Festergut for the first time only last weekend - took us 8-9 weeks (with 2-4 attempts each). Rotface will be next ;)

For The Alliance is tough these days. My first 3 toons to get it, got it about 1 1/2 years ago. There was someone that would run it like clockwork on a weekly basis for anyone that was interested. He would organize the groups. Invites were given to those that were on his list that had heard via word of mouth. My mage was fortunate enough to be allowed to run with them at lvl 65 (had already done the achievement on my 80 hunter and was assisting weekly). That particular run we got all four in the one go (usually would do the 4 in two stints). Now my next 80 is having a very tough time (has 1/4 complete). Has only been able to join those that announce in chat, lol.

Btw, I tend to help horde with PVE occasionally when the opportunity presents itself. I have also had assistance from horde at times :)

I'm not sure I will like leveling on a PvP server (have some low toons, horde side on a PvP server - just beginning to venture out of the starting areas, lol).
