How'd You Chose Your Characters' Names

Unread post by Arwyn »

How did you come up with your character or characters names? Did you just think it up? Did you use the Randomizer offered by Blizz? Did you base it off the name of character you like?

For my main characters I'm working with now:

Nhaul: Just made up

Nonn: Just made up

Loirdes: Heard it on television and I liked the sound of it

Nalyn: Just made up

Alyr: Based on a name offered by the Randomizer

Bhanke: Based it on the work "bank" since its one of my bank alts.

So how'd you get your names?

Well, 'Vephriel' has been a name I've had for a long time.

I remember years and years ago I got it from one of those random 'Vampire Name Generator' thingies. I put in my real name, and it said that my vampire name would be Vephriel. Though the generator itself was silly and I just did it for fun, I really liked that name and so I just kept it in my head and used it for various characters and such. Then, when I started WoW, I thought it just suited my Blood Elf perfectly. :)

My main, Eloin, was named after a character in a book I read. I recall that the character was an animal, which I suppose is why I named my hunter this. /shrug
Kamalia was a name I found that meant "Like the moon". However, I made a typo,as the original name was "Kamaria". I chose it because my draenei had the pure white skin option, and I had noticed on other draenei that this skin option often looks like it's glowing for some reason.
Clover is my tauren druid. I just wanted her name to be something short and sweet. I made her a couple of months ago, and was shocked that the name hadn't been taken.
Rickymortis is my (severely underleveled) undead priest. I saw the name on a comical Halloween tombstone and it stuck.

My first ever toon was a Tauren warrior named Regash. That came to my mind when I had him look like I wanted him to. Just like that! *fingersnap* It was there.

Karathyriel came from a name generator called eBoN (everchanging Book of Names). Some say the -iel at the end of the name makes it a female name but I don't care, it sounded (and still sounds) male to me.

My first character was 'Lynxr.' I was trying to see whether the name 'Lynx' was available, but made a typo and accidentally stuck an R on the end. I went with it.

When I created Jagwyr as an alt, I decided to stick with the theme of misspelled feline names. I especially liked that they both contained a Y and ended in R.

Well... its kinda funny... :)

This char has a very interesting history. Long story short, he started as a Dwarf Hunter at Vanilla Launch on a high pop pvp server, was rerolled as a Nightelf, abandoned at 45 for a little while, moved to a pve server, leveled to 70, moved to another pve server, leveled to 80 and now race changed to Blood Elf and server swapped to yet another PvP server. Yeah. Good times....

This guys moved around a ton from all the different groups of friends I play with who like to swap sides and servers like its the flavor of the month. But why epicfail? Well, I could say it started as an Ironic thing... like a porn star named Timmy Tinydick with a more than a 5 dollar footlong going for him. I could say what I first thought when making the last major server/race change... "Nothing good could come from this... /grin". I could say its a warning to others about my unluckiness with groups, loot, survival (not the spec), etc... you know its not the black cat that crosses your path thats as unlucky as the poor shmo who trips over one. I could say its because I may end up race changing this guy over to a goblin (when available) and roll engineering/Alchemy. Not a bad combination really: The most unstable personality handling pharmaceuticals, firearms and explosives followed by a gigantic T-Rex that chews on people he doesn't like.... What could go wrong there???

Truth be told, the world may never know the meaning behind my name.. but I will tell you this... if you group with a guy named Epicfail and something horribly disfiguringly wrong happens to your person.... whose fault is it REALLY??? I'm just sayin...
I don't really feel like this is so much the "Post-Modern" era as much as its the "Pre-Zombie-Apocalpse" era. I consider myself more of a forward thinking guy and an era that just won't die is just as feasible as a coming era, where the dead come back.

I also have a Draenei elemental shaman named Phasers.

She was created as a silly joke, on a day that my home server was down, as a 'temporary' alt on a random server.

Phasers... she's a spacegoat who crashed on Azeroth in a spaceship. She shoots lightning out of her hands. She's an Engineer. She can even create wormholes. What could be more perfect? She stuck, and I leveled her to 80.

I'm a big Star Trek fan, of course. ;)

Most names I make up because they sound good, some I pick because it's a word that just sounds like a good name.

Ryno was the name of my first main toon years ago when I played FFXI. I just like keeping that.

Saturo has been a nickname of mine for a while (mostly online tough), Taelnazir was offered by a name generator, Toshi I just made up, and Stereoptic was meant to be Stereoscopic, but that was already taken.

I also exist on DeviantArt.

Lunania (Hunter): Wanted a name that had 'Luna' in it despite the fact she was a Blood Elf. X) I just stuck 'nia' on the end and yay, a name \o/

Onidanaa (Druid): Was just... completely random. Although I had to add the extra 'a' since my last server it was apparently taken. Ironic, 'Oni' means Demon in Japanese... which is the complete opposite of her personality.

Môonfeather (Shaman): Compound name, but I had to use the special character since it was already taken.

Cyndeth (Warlock): Random name generator. :3

Samala (Druid): Made up.

Ravenstar (Hunter): Made up as well.

NEW SIGNATURE PENDING... SOON.

Oh wow, let's see...

Saor is the name of my main. He's a rogue. I originally rolled a rogue to make a character similar to my primary villian in the world-building stuff I've been doing, Soar. However 'Soar' was taken (pronounced Soh-AR, by the way) so I went with Saor, and it just kinda stuck.

Kalos is my paladin, derived from 'Kalos kagathos,' which I've seen translated as both 'the just and the beautiful' or 'handsome and brave.' Either way it fits a Blood elf paladin pretty well, I think. :) Later on I rolled a shadow priest that I named Sophos, derived from the same philosophy; it means "wise and good.' Kalos and Sophos Kagathos have since been made brother and sister :)

Finally, my hunter Silinrul has a much less original name. Silinrul just means 'hunter' in drow. Then again, I rolled her just absent mindedly while waiting for my friend to help me get another character off the zeppelin (she got stuck due to streaming the game, long story) and never expected her to stick around. Now she's level 80 and still going strong. XD

I am somewhat...uninventive, and used a name from the map of Azeroth and chose Ungoro and made him a hunter, i had no idea that the crater was so full of life and had so many beasts (even though most ar untameable) so i tell people exactly that as a reason if people ask me why i chose my name.

Firewing, my hunter honestly came out of the blue. And I chose hunter because, come on, who DOESN'T like a large cat or a beautiful bird fighting for you and being your companion?

Azunara, my druid was based off a web WoW comic I read a good time ago. One main character was a nether drake named Azuna. I love the name, but it was, of course, taken. So I tacked on a 'ra' and voila, my comical, crazy, gnome hating, (long story.) druid was born.

Kieryon, my DK, came out of random.

Terania, my BE, was because I love the name Terra. Terra was taken, Terrania seemed odd, so I took out an 'r'. Her full name? Terania Novaria. Her last name makes me think of novas, then supernovas, then explosions. Her dragonhawk was named Phoenix, and now all her pets and mounts follow a fiery, explosive name. So she Phoenix, Ashes the Onyxian whelp, and Inferno, the black hawkstrider.

I'm an altoholic: Just thought I'd warn ya ^_^
Ryukotsusei: (Pronounced Re-You-Coat-Say. Don't wanna confuse you like I do my guildies in vent :D) My first character, a blood elf paladin. I got the name from a show called InuYasha. There was some dragon dude in a couple episodes with that name and I liked it.
Rongar: My orc hunter! (yay)Clicked Randomize and Ragnor came up. Thought it sounded better backwards!
Soanvalke: My Mage. His name is Japanese for Stefan, a character from the Fire Emblem games. Well... It's actually Soanevalke. I like mine better!
Maldon: My shaman! Just thought of it.
Alorath: My rogue. Again, just thought of it.
Greil: My original human DK. Got the name from a character in Fire Emblem.
Tazinoka: My faction-changed Greil! I thought it sounded troll-ish so I went with it.
Tazka: I changed Tazinoka to an orc about a month ago and I thought this sounded more orcish.
Grunall: My druid. It was from the randomize button.
DONE! Mostly because I'm too lazy to remember anymore :D

My characters are named in all sorts of ways:

Bermuda: After trying and failing to think of a name, I noticed the world map hanging on my wall. The first place I saw was Alaska, which wasn't available, so I looked again and chose Bermuda :D .

Boomsky: Named after a planet in Spore. Most of the planets are called generic stuff like Delva, Plandeb and Oxyndon, but then I found a sun called Trick, and around it was a planet namd Boomsky(no lie ;) ), I instantly realised that it was the best name I had ever heard :P .

Alerri: Completely random, used because nobody on any realm worldwide had ever used that name at the time.

Etc etc :D
Also known as Bermuda from those pesky official EU forums.

This is going to be a long one... lol
Espen (NE Druid): The name of one of my RP characters, a little girl that could turn into a bear. I think it means forest, or bear, or something along those lines in Gaelic.
Komia (BE Hunter): The name of one of my RP characters, one that commands mythical-type creatures. Her two main pets, Yume and Phobos, were her partners.
Skithia (Draenei Pally): The name of a Chaotic (card game) creature. I like the sound of it.
Teva (Tauren Shaman): I wanted a lady cow shaman, so I made up a Tauren-ish name.
Durjak (Troll DK): I made it up, after looking up how troll names work. Correctly, it's Dur'jak.
Krowth (Forsaken Warrior): The name I use for any bank alt I use anywhere. It's 'work' backwards, with a 'th' tacked on.
Zudarjin (Troll Warrior): New name for a new, specifically for WoW RP character. I made it up the same why I made up Durjak. Correctly, it's Zu'dar(jin). He only thinks he's a Jin. XD
Lyrae (BE Rogue): The name of one of my RP characters, attached to a new, specifically for WoW RP character. The name of a star.
Arkadiy (Draenei Shaman): Means 'Happy Land' in Russian. I couldn't resist! :D
Kevasina (Troll Priest): WoW random name.
Hyenal (Forsaken Priest): WoW random name, that I thought was AWESOME. It's Hyena, with an 'l' on the end!
Hepta (Gnome Rogue): The name of my most favourite D&D character. Hepta Tightass was a Halfling Thief. It fit. XD
Tazdingu (Troll Hunter): 'Tazdingo' is a Troll Cheer that I love. Wanted to use it as a name, but it was taken, so I modified it a bit. ^-^ Correctly, it's Taz'dingu.

That's most of the main ones I play on. XD

Okay I won't be saying everyone, because then this would be one long post (I have over 20 characters ^^) and my memory sucks!

Latarir: My main nightelf man druid. The actual name has no meaning, I think rambled names and well he is a unique case because...it sounds elven even sorta.
Metenor: Draenei mage, this one is actualy funny...I was watching the weather when his name was made, it's sort of a twist of meteorologist.
Miarra: Draenei hunter! Another no meaning name...I want to recall why I named her this. (Maybe I wanted to name her Mia)
Anotnaar: Blood elf mage, no I do not have an obsession over mages. His name was taken from a name generator, with some added..his original name was Anoitnas. I just tweaked alot here. (same with his two brothers)
Sinaen: Belf DK, the only DK leved to 80 before the duel-wield neft. Anotnaar's brother to be exact, by looking at the roleplay logs his name was Sinoen, seems like I changed it.
Hargg (Har'gg): My underlevel Orc warrior on The Sha'tar, I thought this name up with my druid mentor...he being the more Horde name expert.
Siliner: You guys were waiting for this one...(kidding!)okay so my Belf hunter. I spended a hour and so on designing him, no don't ask how I did it! His name took another hour, when I went throught the alphabet to figure out a name, then I chose that his name begins with an 'S'. Now that I look it and even say it...it sounds oddly 'sillier'.
Kalapata (Kala'Pata): Actualy has been long deleted but I plan or reviving him. Mah troll Shammy! The word means "fish pot" in finnish, another wonderful name suggestion by the druid master!

I try to put thought into my names so its not random or anything.

Silverhawk(tauren shaman) This is my main and I wanted a name that seemed nomadic. I'd used the name several times as a pen name and figured why not? It did fit after all.

Immoralè(undead death knight) Do I have to explain that one? It seems so obvious. What could be more immoral than a death knight?
Funky letter is there because I couldn't delete the other toon I was using as a name place holder at the time. And later realized I'd spelled it wrong >.> (WTB name change pst)

Valhn(BE hunter) Gonna change the name someday to what it was supposed to be,Valhen. She is named after an original character I created for a story. Love the character and the name so I used it for my hunter.

Lonèwolf(tauren druid) My uncle was a native American and his name was Lonewolf. He passed away a few years ago.

Vash(BE paladin) If you don't know who Vash is go watch an anime called Trigun. My boyfriend made a priest named Wolfwood and we level the two together xD

Tahlian, my blood elf (originally night elf) hunter was one of the first WoW characters I ever created. His name was inherited from a D&D swashbuckler I was playing in a tabletop game at the time...according to an article I had read on the elvish language in the game, "Tahlian" means "blade master." Not quite appropriate for a hunter who stands back and pew-pews while his dinosaur chews on things, but the meaning is less important than the name these days.

Teresian the Tauren (originally night elf) druid was the very first character I ever created...I got sucked into the game by watching the opening cinematic. If I recall correctly, the name is a reshuffled version of one off the name generator. Since Tere and Tahl date from Vanilla WoW, I don't exactly remember for sure. Tere and Tahl were brothers when they were Alliance. These days, they're more "brothers from another mother." :D

Destril the blood elf priest - Des got his name from the name generator.

Dandill the blood elf death knight - Also another name generator find. I had to add an extra "L" to make the name available. I wasn't sure on the name, till the person who was rolling an undead DK to level with him looked over my shoulder at the name, chuckled, and said "Keep that name...she'll call him 'Dandy.' " So I did, and my Dk's nickname has created some of his more memorable habits and personality quirks. :D

Oakleigh the Tauren hunter - I had originally meant her name to be "Oakley," as a sort of homage to Annie Oakley...but the name was taken. So I messed with the spelling a bit.

Keilos the blood elf paladin. I have no idea where this one came from. As I was staring at the character creation screen, stuck for a name, it just came to me. And for those who were wondering, that's pronounced "KY-lohs." ;)
