That's a good point. Though, I did go back and do the same reverse-searching. I looked up Gara, because Gara's a good example (if not only) of a puzzle-mystery tame. Many of the items that were needed to make the Spirit Effigy are labeled as "Quest" items though there was not any actual "quest in the quest log" that I can remember during the Gara chain. So possibly, maybe its similar to Gara? Maybe we need to find an NPC that, when in BM spec, has a different dialogue that begins the chain of events allowing us to loot items (off the ground or off mobs) that will help us track down the Spectral Gryphon (Since it is a Spirit Beast, it may require the BM spec dialogue thing like Gara did).

That is possible, though I haven't seen any npcs that weren't around prior (in old areas), and I made it a habit to talk to anyone that I was able to. Still, it is a possibility.

if we're on "talk to people" maybe talking to a spirit healer in a zone where you should have a spirit gryphon but don't would start it? are there any zones like that?

Hm... None that immediately come to mind.

I believe Crystalsong Forest, Wyrmrest Temple, Icecrown, and Storm Peaks have it. Though, if I remember what I experienced and read recently, it only shows up on death for non-night elf players (since it was meant as a means to fly as a ghost).

Though, I think there used to be some NPCs spread around the old world that were ghosts that you could only see when dead. I vaguely remember that back when "ghost running" used to be the means for low level hunters to cross the world without constantly being eaten by high level things when trying to tame something on the other side of the world.

That's true. Alliance had a gryphon, and the Horde had a Wyvern. In the zones you listed, you would/will be on a spectral gryphon/wyvern whilst dead so you could reach you body.

Indeed, and there still is. There was one by Gadgetzan (one of the Dons), and one in Blackrock Mountain in the tomb suspended above the lava.

So the Spectral Feather is the item you need to search for. I don't know if it spawns anywhere else, but I happened to be running at the SW Flight Point and saw a weird blue feather sticking out of the nest. Clicking on it summoned the Spectral Gryphon. It was neutral, but I was in a rush and clicked tame super fast since there was a lot of normal foot traffic nearby and I didn't want someone to kill it. It does seem to scale (or otherwise is 110).

It doesn't fly, it runs alongside you.



The feather appears in this nest, very hidden. You can see a bit of the despawning feather under his front leg (the brighter blue thing) so you can see where it spawned.

Ahhhhh, how awesome!!!! God I wonder if there's other spawn points, either way, I'm heading there on my Horde character right now for a suicide taming mission.

Wow thats awesome!! Congrats! I flew right to Stormwind and there was the feather! Tamed my very own spectral Gryph! TY for finding it!!

true. I have not seen any confirmation that the spirit wyvern is ingame yet...unless...


hmm no.. it can't be.. having the spirit gryphon be alliance and the wyvern for horde would be too cruel...

If you go on Wowhead and view "Spectral Feather", it looks identical to the other items that say "same model as". Clicking any of them and view in 3D will show you what it looks like. It's a long feather, white colored at one end that fades into a light blue color.

And thanks! I'm glad I could help the community find something for once XD Though to be honest, I wasn't going to SW to check for it. I was planning to go visit some old world locations and talk to NPCs. I decided to stop and talk to the gryphon mount vendor dwarf and that's when I saw the weird blue feather sticking out of the nest lol
