Idea: Aquatic pets

Unread post by AquaPets »

An idea for aquatic pets for hunters,
-These pets only work when in the water (much like aquatic mounts). Where if you leave the water your pets will dismiss
-Normal pets will still also work in water
-Because they cant be used on land these aquatic pets gain an additional ability as a trade off, which allows underwater breathing
-A new slot on the "Call Pet" ability allowing up to 6 pets, with the 6th slot being dedicated to aquatic pets
-A few new pet families and some sub families for existing pet families
-Why? for fun
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new pet families are:

Nimble Fish - These are the smaller more agile fish but not necessary critters as these fish can still fight. Some of the models would include the "frenzy" fish and the "deepseafish" models
-Specialisation: Cunning
-Basic Ability: Bite
-Family Ability: (Dodge) Slippery Scales - Increase dodge chance by 30% for 20 sec
-Diet: Fruit, Fungus

Notes:
-The "Pterois" model seem to be new with Dragonflight
-The "felbloodsnappa" and fish skeleton don't have animation attached to the models but their unique enough that they would make good pets (once animation is added)
-I don't think the "goldfish" or carp model would work, and would make a better battle pet instead. However I included them for a visual reference anyway
-I think the first row of classic fish models would work, not sure about the rest
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Predatorial Fish - These are the large more bloodthirsty fish. Some of the models will include the various "shark" models as well as the "swordfish" versions
-Specialisation: Ferocity
-Basic Ability: Bite
-Family Ability: (Mortal Wounds) Voracious Bite - Grievously wound the target, reducing the effectiveness of any healing received for 10 sec.
-Diet: Raw Fish, Fish

Notes:
-I included the Zandalari druid forms, not sure if they exist in the wild but would be cool to tame
-various versions of sharks with multiple patterns; normal, hammerhead and swordfish versions exist
-I think the classic sharks have been removed and replaced from retail
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tideskippers - These underwater sea creatures consist of the more bulkier beasts, Some of the models include "dolphins" "orca" whales and "whaleshark"
-Specialisation: Tenacity
-Basic Ability: Bite
-Family Ability: (Defence) Blubber - Reduce damage taken by 50% for 12 sec.
-Diet: Raw Fish, Fish, Fungus

Notes:
-The whaleshark models would shrink once tamed as at the moment they are too large, they would mirror the size of the orca
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Squid (Exotic) - These slimy tentacled beasts would be classified as exotic. With some models include "leviathan" and the multiple "seamonster" models
-Specialisation: Cunning
-Basic Ability: Smack
-Family Ability: (Triggered Defence) Counter Illumination - When health falls below 40%, reduce damage taken by 60% for 15 sec. Can only occur once every 120 sec.
-Exotic Ability: Ink Spray - a Damage over Time spell that lasts 12 seconds with a 60 second cooldown
-Diet: Raw Fish, Fish, Fungus

Notes:
-The seamonster and leviathan models would shrink as they are currently too large
-The "mercilessone" are sometimes considered aberrations however in pandaria they are a few models out their called octopus within the fishing nets
-Considered combing them with Kraken to make a new family called "Sea Beasts" however I'm not sure the family abilities would work
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kraken (Exotic) - The terror of the depths, ready to unleash their rage. the will use the various "krakken" models
-Specialisation: Tenacity
-Basic Ability: Claw
-Family Ability: (Slow) Chilling Touch - Reduce movement speed by 50% for 6 sec.
-Exotic Ability: Unleash - increases damage by 20% for 8 seconds, 150 seconds cooldown
-Trick Ability: Splash - uses the "submerge" animation
-Diet: Raw Fish, Fish, Raw Meat

Notes:
-They would shrink once tamed
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Existing families also will have aquatic pets incorporated in to them with existing sea creature models. These pets will inherit their specialisation/abilities but also get a bonus ability - underwater breathing.
Existing families are:

Jellyfish - subfamily of Sporebat - thematically I feel they go together well and at the moment Sporebats only have 6 existing models to choose from.

Notes:
-Almost all the models have an armoured or mount version which I think should be tamable
-The "abysall_jellyfish" model doesn't have any animation attached to it yet
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sea Serpents - subfamily of Serpents - A nice way to add some of the underwater eels

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sea Turtles - subfamily of Turtles - Actual turtles rather than tortoise that currently can be tamed

Notes:
-"deepseaturtle2" is a new model in Dragonflight
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sea Slugs - subfamily of Carapids - The snails from Zereth Mortis are currently in this pet family

Notes:
-Not sure if they should be aquatic only, but they are found in underwater zones

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sea Lions - subfamily of Riverbeasts - I feel the name is vague enough that it can incorporate multiple different appearances .

Notes:
-I think the "Lionseal" should be a normal pet that can be used on land
-includes the aquatic druid forms and the Kul Tirans druid form, with and without armour, not sure if they can be found in the wild but they look good
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sea Horse - subfamily of Coursers - a way to make use of the unused colour models
Seahorse.png

Notes:
-Both models have armoured and non armoured versions
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Threshers - subfamily of Hydra- even though they only have one head, the rest of the model looks quite similar.

Notes:
-Perhaps can be put into the "Riverbeast" family if they don't fit Hydra
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stingray - subfamily of Rays - A way to tame the underwater variety
Stingray.png

Notes:
-The "stingray" model is from classic, not sure if its been replaced or still in the game
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's still a few models that I didn't include but I think this is a good look in to aquatic beasts in wow and how they can be utilised.
Or perhaps it could be a new specialisation for aquatic pets only

The specialisation abilities will be:
-passive - underwater breathing
-active - increase swim speed by 60% for 12 seconds, affects entire party, 150 seconds cooldown
-OR active - (engineers buoy) - your pet attempts to take you straight up to the surface

Bonus Glyph: "A murder of crows" - when used underwater it can be replaced by "A school of Piranhas" instead (This model already exists)

I love this idea. It would introduce so many fun new beasts as hunter pets!

Unfortunately, my gut feeling is that the developers wouldn't be able to justify the amount of time required to implement this, as it would only be usable in specific situations. I think it would require a new water-based patch for them to justify it, but it would be great to see it all the same!

I've always wished we could somehow have aquatic pets, even moreso after I played Guild Wars 2 for a couple years where they had this exact mechanic - as soon as your character was submerged, your active pet would automatically swap to your aquatic one (it could only be used underwater), but it felt very natural and fun - as someone who has a fear of deep water, swimming along with a big shark beside me made me feel safer and it was a more enjoyable experience.

Yeah, I tried to reduce the workload by combining some the looks into existing families, sadly we've missed the chance with the naga patch and BFA

I'm all down for this to be honest, But like some people have said, It feels very situational and considering it can only be used in water, I'm doubtful Blizzard would bother to make it. :(

Though just food for thought, There was an item in Nazjatar that allowed you to use your underwater mounts in the zone so.. Maybe we could have something like that for pets? Expect obviously we could use them everywhere.

I could see a counter being, "Oh well they'd need too be in a bubble and that would look ridiculous and make no sense!" And you would be correct.. However in a world where we can tame Giant Geode worms with crystal teeth, Robotic cats and ostriches, Ancient ruin like Spiders and Beetles found the the depths of the afterlife and an ancient storm wolf once trapped in a gun, I think this is the least weird thing that would need to be added.

I could totally see the method of getting this being related to fishing, Or perhaps a new secret rare mob found in one of the water zones like Vashjir, Nazjatar or Even Thousand Needles if you really wanted.
