best way to ask for deadmines bird tame?

i did deadmines on my hunter-twink-in-progress today, and have the two rare deadmines birds in my npcscan. at the start of every group, i let them know politely that i am after the birds, and no one ever seems to mind. the group i was just in all said it was ok if i tamed it, but i didn't expect it to actually be up. well one of them was! and as i ran past the group to tame it, the tank "saved" me from it, and killed it without saying a word. even when i said something in party chat, he never said anything. (though this might be because low level players who are new to the game never read party chat. SIGH.)

is there a better way to go about making sure you tame the birds if they are up? that was pretty heartbreaking lol.

(before you say get a friend to run you through, i am on a new server where i don't know anyone, and i don't have gold to tip a stranger either)

The only suggestion I might say is to give a heads up before you run off. Something like "I see the bird, please let me tame it without interference" or something. Not everyone is going to realize what you're doing right away, especially at low level, where you have a higher chance of running into newbies. A tank or healer instinct will most likely kick in if they just see you randomly taking damage.

I don't know exactly what went down, but that would be my reaction.

Oh, and it would probably help if I had your character's name. I'm probably going to be coming up with some clever name for my DK, something like Cialbi

he was the very first bird! i was so scared that someone was going to attack him and steal aggro. one down one to go!
