Here come the pet nerfs (5/14/13 patch notes)

Cooldown on crowd control abilities for several Hunter pet families have changed.
- Basilisk pet family’s Petrifying Gaze cooldown is now 2 minutes (up from 1 minute).
- Bat pet family’s Sonic Blast cooldown is now 2 minutes (up from 1 minute).
- Crane pet family’s Lullaby cooldown is now 2 minutes (up from 1 minute).
- Porcupine pet family’s Paralyzing Quill cooldown is now 2 minutes (up from 1 minute).
- Shale Spider pet family’s Web Wrap cooldown is now 90 seconds (up from 45 seconds).
And a buff, apparently:
- Worm pet family’s Burrow Attack has had its cooldown reduced to 14 seconds (down from 20 seconds).
I didn't think most people used petrifying gaze in the first place, due to there being numerous other more useful CCs....

So... is this instead of the change to Exotic Mastery reducing pet ability cooldowns? Patch notes has it sounding like that's still happening. But the CC abilities are the big reason why that change was to be implemented, and those all just got reduced separately.

I believe it's both.

Exciting, yes?

I don’t know... but I'm sure it's just an over sight, I'm sure they get neutered too. I was reaaaaaaly hoping the bat stun nerf was a stuff up/error and we were not going to get doubled nerfed. This makes me pretty miffed :?
And I think the "buff" to the worms burrow is not a buff so much as a fix. After they removed the 30 reduction in cool downs for BM, it also buggered up it PVE damage attached to pets (e.g., rabid, etc.)

I think this buff is just them bringing it back to where it was before they nerfed the cool down reduction. Anyways, this makes me a sad panda and I'm not even a panda!

Ignore that ^ I had no idea that of all the pets abilities, the worms burrow is not effected by longevity, so this is indeed a small buff. (or fix ;) )

This is truly on the top ten of the stupidest things Blizzard has done...

So lets see...

Raiding hunters get a dps boost.
BM hunters have one tool taken away (because no one will ever spec into intimidation again).
BM hunters take a severe nerf to pet utility..

and now the rest of the pet changes, to ensure that no one serious about their content, PVE or PVP, would ever use a pet with CC again?

There are far better choices among the pets that taking any of these that are getting nerfed (or will get nerfed). Any pet that brings a debuff is a far better choice with these changes. Way better now to bring a pet that applies a bleed or cast reduction or increased magic damage.

The really ironic thing is that Blizz is doing all this at the same time they say that hunter pets need to be more unique. Really..

And so spiders and crabs are ok, because those aren't "full" CC?...

Not getting where blizz is going with this..

Yep. Roots aren't as effective as completely locking someone down.

And I wouldn't say that NO ONE will bring pets with full CC abilities for PvP (or even PvE) - you just have to choose your timing better. Don't get me wrong, the change still sucks - but the situation is bad enough without stretching it.

This makes me glad that my current favorite hunter has only become attached to pets with passive buffs :/ what a bummer this is. I hope it gets reverted.

So what I am reading here...

Is that I should just ditch my hunter because we're not allowed to have nice things....

Correct?

But with these nerfs, are you comfortable bringing a pet that has an ability you might only be able to use once per fight?

With these changes, any debuffs are likely to be much more valuable than that one-shot at locking someone down.

Depends. If we're talking PvE, I don't generally bring utility pets in the first place. If it's PvP, then if used correctly, well-timed lockdowns can make the difference between finishing someone off and having them heal in your face or otherwise getting away. Other classes have cooldowns that are only available once per (average length) fight, so that is a question of adjustment.

I still don't like the changes, of course; I've already said as much. But debuffs are generally not worth the loss of utility in PvP situations.

Perhaps it depends on the type of PVP as well.. I only do BGs or World PVP, and in those environments, especially with these changes, I still see debuffs as being much more preferable.

Perhaps in arenas the much longer cooldowns are still better.

I'd say in any situation where you're likely to be fighting in smaller groups, the utility will make the difference. If you're in huge packs with diminishing returns everywhere, then you could potentially bring a debuff and let everyone else handle the locking down.

Personally, I stick with pets that give me the greatest personal advantage without depending on anyone else, since I generally can't count on anyone else. :)
