The breed change from the MP is VERY expensive but the genes are cheaper than the normal genes .. I like that.. Not sure If I want anyone with piebald though

One thing I'm not clear on--if a dragon has genes like bar/daub which have gaoler equivalents, does it keep them if breed changed into a gaoler?

no - Gaoler genes are different even if they are named the same. Different scrolls on the ah. If you turn a dragon into a Gaoler it become a triple basis and if you turn a Gaoler into a normal breed it becomes triple basis
