Yep. That was something announced several months ago at Gamescon. I know that many people have been suggesting that Survival become melee for quite some time.

But...that makes no sense. Hunters-Ranged pet class. How can there be a Petless melee class now lol

Likely because hunters used to have melee weapons, and a lot of people have wanted a melee playstyle. In GW2 their ranger class, which has pets, can play as both melee and ranged and it's freaking awesome.

Survival keeps their pet. Back in vanilla, hunters had a lot more melee abilities, I think especially survival.

Like Xota said, SV keep their pets.

But yeah, back in classic Survival actually was themed around being a melee-hunter with a pet. Hunter's used to have melee weapons and melee abilities like Wing Clip, Mongoose Bite, and Raptor Strike. Survival had talents that specifically boosted those abilities and things like "parry chance". So that's probably why Blizzard changed Survival in Legion to melee in order to build around the different 'class fantasy'. They really just went back to their original concept of the Survival Hunter.

Ya I remember that...we started out with daggers or axes and we had melee weapons for when mobs got close, and there was a spot where we couldn't shoot or hit.....huh...weird

It's to give variety to the class. Currently the differences between Hunter specs are very subtle compared to most, really just minor flavour variations of the same thing. This gives people who want to try something different the chance to do so.

I myself played my blood elf hunter as melee with claws back in TBC.
I thought it cool to fight side by side with my lynx, ripping and tearing our enemies to shreds in close combat.

Of course, that wasn't very effective but it looked so cool...

Too bad I had to reinstall WoW, so all my screenshots from back then are gone.

I've only played Survival in alpha/beta and it's totally my new jam.

Oh I do plan on trying it. I really like the idea. My only issue was I thought it was melee without pet. Without the pet I was like "Wtf" with the pet...well it makes me want to release my inner Rexxar

I feel bad. Like I'm betraying my spec. It is honestly a lot more fun than BM is right now.

I actually very much approve of the change for survival to Melee.

I might actually play one (Survival hunter) on an alt now, instead of "BM on every hunter".

It works fine in my mind, that one of the specs is different in that way. I'm just sad they caved on MM.

I wish we had lassos. Would so love a lasso for SV, instead of a harpoon. But I love the idea of this spec anyway. (Though I'll probably mostly stick to BM for the greater pet range).

Hunter are squishy, let them wear shields..

I definitely want to try SV sometime, but I'm currently thoroughly testing BM since it sadly doesn't seem to be getting a lot of testing beyond level 103 (most seem to switch to SV or MM). But SV does look cool, though given how un-dual spec friendly Legion is sort of looking, I may level an SV-Hunter alt instead after all @_@

Guess the beta decided I had time, because it just crashed my Hunter in flight and I can't log back in lol!

So on log in I geuss we get some spear, unknown Ilevel. I'm rocking mythic so I'm curious as to what what we will get.
