Min of Silence, Norway memorial event: Make Love not Warcraf
Completed video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBWudG_5gOc
Hello lovely Petopians!
What: 1 minute of silence
When: Wednesday July 27, 2011, 19:00 local server time
Where: YOUR sever in front of your faction capital (SW or Ogri)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J0_phCd9xg
I don't know if many of you know, but I live in Oslo, Norway. I'm sure you've heard about what happened on the news ect over this last weekend. I haven't even had a chance to look over these forums to see if anyone here is also in Norway or if there were people effected by what happened. My husband was downtown at the time of the bombing. His building was a few blocks down from when the bomb went off and he was not hurt. Him and some colleges ran to the scene and were helping the people who were injured and then helped police secure the area. (Hubby is in the national guard.)
I have had so many friends who have lost siblings or friends on the island. I just can't explain how devastating this was for this very peaceful country.
I was downtown yesterday in Oslo with about 150,000 other supporters to show our unity, love, sorrow, and support for all those effected. It was amazing! It sparked an idea as well.
In the newspapers the media keeps describing the mass murder as a world of warcraft player, and that's supposed help justify or give people more understanding of the type of person he is. I would like to have something positive in this game to show that we are a good community. That there are real people who are sitting behind the computer who care about more than just this game. We are students, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, and parents and for one minute we will come together to pay our respect to all those who suffered in the tragedy in Norway. Most of the kids who were killed were 14-18hrs old. You know a lot of kids that are playing WoW are that age as well.
I'd ask that you try to help me by letting everyone on your server know about the memorial on Wed at 7pm. Take a screen shot or film people gathered and send it to me at Zeilla@zpresents.com. I will make a video collage of all the participants. It will be an amazing and positive thing for us to do as a community to support an irl community.
I know I will have people trolling the event, but I hope I will have more supporters and participants than the trolls.
Thank you,
Zeilla

I'm glad you're safe, Zeilla. I thought of you when I heard what happened, as you're one of the few people I actually know living in Norway. My thoughts are with your friends and community. What happened was truly horrific and came as a huge shock to me, since it's usually such a peaceful part of the world.
Regarding the WoW thing, I haven't heard any news report in Australia that has mentioned it. But they did report some sort of manifesto of the guy that mentioned training with a different game, Call of Duty 2. That's all I heard. I don't want to derail the thread with a discussion of violence and video games, but just wanted to give your concern an international perspective.

What people in the media don't get, I think, is how widespread gaming is and thus how statistically likely it is that someone like this is a gamer. They treat it like it's a "tell" that someone is especially inclined to violence.

Re: Min of Silence, Norway memorial event: Make Love not War
I will make every effort to be there.
Edit: Might be on horde. Haven't decided.
Great to hear you're ok. Prayers to those families who've lost someone.
If anyone else is doing this please post and show some love.

I'm going to do this on my server regardless of whether anyone else is there. Outside the capital at 7pm server time (twenty-three minutes off from now).

Re: Min of Silence, Norway memorial event: Make Love not War
Thank you all for the support! And like Zed implied, yes, just one person marking this event is meaningful! Of all the places I posted about this, this was the one place I knew people would understand and that I wouldn't get trolled for it. Thank you guys! <3!
We had over 200 ppl on my server and even horde guilds came to SW to show support. It really was amazing! My email is getting flooded with screen shots from all over the EU servers! WowHobbs sent me a video of his realm participating as well.
People really did come together to show their support for Norway and really brought a positive image of WoW players. We all know there's good people on this game, it's why we play, but now others will know it too. I'll post here when I have a video of the event up!
Thank you again!!!

The song is called Mitt Lille Land. I think it is Maria Menas version.

Yeah, it's the same version.
The "funny" part is that the song was made a month before the massacre, it was used as an advert for one of the TV channels we have, I think it was some news thing, it's tv2 anyway.
