Another Question For Parents!

Unread post by Tufak »

Oh so fun, another question for the parents on Petopia!

I'm thinking of starting a major writing project (or, more appropriately, finishing one that I started long ago). It will be a children's book, with an alphabetic list (one per letter) of mythical beast/monsters from around the world, written to poetry.

Working title at the moment is 'B is for Bunyip'.

Primary question is: Do people think they (and parents they know) would be willing to get a book like this for their kids? It's aimed for older kids that are already reading on their own, but I personally think that geek parents or those interested in folklore/mythology would get a kick out of reading it to younger ones.

If such a book existed, would it be something you would be interested in getting?

As a mother of two (a soon five year old boy and a soon two year old girl), I can without a shadow of a doubt say I'd love something like this for my kids.
Especially as I assume it would have lovely artwork of the mythical beasts which the younger kids can look at, and my son would definitely be the type to be interested in a book like this. I've also found that rhyme and poetry are great favourites, or at least my kids love it!

Good luck with this project, it sounds like a very worthy idea!

Mythology + little tykes is awesome, I'd nab one. I've always been a fan of Mythological creatures, legends, and the sort, and it's great to start young. If you think about it, little boys are already sort of into that stuff with the way some of these cartoons come across, so a majority of them would easily get a kick out of it. And nowadays even little girls would be interested, especially if there's a U for Unicorn, lol.

I can tell you that in my house it's the boy who likes U for Unicorn, whereas the little girlie is more G for Gorgon. :P

I like the idea. My parents got me Hosie's alphabet when I was little, so I grew up to things like "G is for gargoyle." I loved it. Different is good.:D

I love books like that and want to find more for my Daughter. The main one I am currently reading to her has to do with the ABC's is about Unicorns and flower/plant Myths. I'd love to get my hands on a book thats ABC's for mythical creatures!

A is for apple, B is for Ball, C is for cat....BORING! Generic and boring. Kids need to learn other things, and mythology was a huge part of my childhood, I want my kid to experience that to!

Thus far...

A is for Alicanto
B is for Bunyip
C is for Chupacabra

And yes, Chupacabra is hard to say...but it's my mother's favorite monster and she's who got me into cryptozoology/mythology as a kid, so that one is a tribute to her.

hey, if my 2yr old can say Xylaphone and elephant and Rhinoserous, I am sure she could say chupacabra...Actually, after asking her, to say it JUST now, I ended up with "Chup..coba"

Hmm. Speaking as a father of 6 yr old twin boys... I'd say it's something I *personally* would want to read, but would probably not get for my kids - simply because I'm finding it challenging enough as-is getting them to retain basic facts and differentiate "real" vs "made up".

But it sounds quite imaginative and interesting! :)

This one is turning into something of moral poems, actually, which I hadn't expected.

Bunyip is a poem about why you shouldn't go down to a billabong alone, things like that.
