Remember, remember ...

Unread post by swordoath »

It is to Madame Justice that I dedicate this concerto, in honor of the holiday that is sadly no longer remembered, and in recognition of the impostor that stands in her stead. Tell me, do you know what day it is?

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.

The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.

Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

It's the 5th of November, traditionally the day in Britain in which a man by the name of Guy Fawkes attempted to overthrow King James I and blow up the Westminster Palace in a bid to restore a Catholic monarchy. It's still celebrated as a holiday called Bonfire day in which they set off fireworks and burn a replica of Fawkes in a bonfire.

What we're talking about is the graphic novel called V or Vendetta (later made into a movie) written by Alan Moore about a man in the midst of a political plot to control a future England in which people are experimented on, subjugated and oppressed to keep a select few in seats of power. It's an extremely revolutionary and thought-provoking piece on how easily people can be controlled and what lengths some will go to for freedom.

Viva la revolution!

Hah, you do realise, it's not about blowing up the Old Bailey?
It's about NOT blowing up the House of Lords.

And bonfires.
And fireworks.

As awesome as vigilante V is...

...let's take a moment to actually remember the 5th of November, just like the rhyme says.

I wondered if anyone would remember. :D

Movie was 'meh' to me. Seemed to pack too much 'lefty' political agenda, but maybe that was the point :P
I don't really feel like this is so much the "Post-Modern" era as much as its the "Pre-Zombie-Apocalpse" era. I consider myself more of a forward thinking guy and an era that just won't die is just as feasible as a coming era, where the dead come back.

Thanks for the clarification! I always wondered why you'd celebrate someone almost blowing up major portions of your government.

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, 'twas his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence [or By God's mercy] he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Hulloa boys, Hulloa boys, let the bells ring.
Hulloa boys, hulloa boys, God save the King!

A penny loaf to feed the Pope.
A farthing o' cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down.
A faggot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar.
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head.
Then we'll say ol' Pope is dead.
Hip hip hoorah!
Hip hip hoorah!

I have to confess, I have a Fawkes mask for when I have to make mischief. >D I'm a wee bit crooked, as it were.

Alan Moore pulled all of his approval for V becoming a movie ever since his other two novels flopped as films, so all of the money he made for this actually went to the man who drew the V comics. xD Omega fail, as it was a blockuster in terms of sales!

Hugo Weaving wasn't the original actor; James Purefoy was. Purefoy quit because he was having a hard time breathing in the costumes, so when they brought in Weaving, he just dubbed over all of Purefoy's parts. Also, all of V's lines were dubbed in later, because despite two different microphones behind his mask, the film crew had a hard time capturing his lines.

Yep, I remembered when Marty went back in time on November 5, 1955. Course, he told the 1955 Doc what he heard from the 1985 Doc, hence the inspiration of making time travel possible.

Then, a week later, it will be when Marty goes back to 1985, and the 'famous storm'.

I had the picture of the V-mask crowd facing down Blizzard about RealID as my wallpaper for a month :)

GAHHHH damn you lol. you beat me to it. This was my favorite part of the movie second only to this line.

V: [Evey pulls out her mace] I can assure you I mean you no harm.
Evey Hammond: Who are you?
V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey Hammond: Well I can see that.
V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

At this point I feel obligated to post the animation I created as a lip-sync project to a part of this particular speech.

Good, good little speech, but damn, you don't realize how much you hate it until you've listened to it for 50+ hours to get all the lip movements right. XP
