Pet loyalty level

How exactly does this work? Obviously just keeping the pet fed does not do it, you have to fight with it too. Perhaps some xp base too? Any way to track all this in TBCC?
If I remeber correctly you need to have the pets out to gain loyality. Dismissing and dieing lower pets loyality but feeding, healing and fighting raises it.
That was how it worked when i played vanilla.. but I dont play classic so not sure it's the same
