Something that I think would solve the problem is one of the little SPOILER code thingies I've seen on some forums. Basically, you put the mature content in a quote-like bubble, but then to show it you have to click Show Spoiler. I think that would be a neat way to solve the problem with "mature" content, because then, if you click Show Spoiler you just made the choice yourself. It would be pretty easy to install too, it's just a little mod for phpBB.

I also exist on DeviantArt.

Yes that would be wondefull. Then noone could complain about it as they would have to choose to view it.

The viewer's choice to view something, regardless of content doesn't make it right to post anything you like under the cover of Mature. I totally don't understand people's perception of the viewer is solo responsible.

- edit by me.. missed a word :P

See this from our perspective then, Makkie. [...] I could understand your reasoning, but this is 2011, and it's the Internet. Far worse than would ever appear on these forums can be discovered by googling for something as innocent as Newspaper. Ifsomeone reads it, it's their own fault. We shouldn't need to take responsibility for what someone else does, and we don't have to either. You've seen Azu, teenagers are completely capable of cognitive abilities!

[...]

And for the record, we're not saying we *need* to have topics on these boards about overly mature topics. If talking about sex is deemed too taboo by Mania, then that's the way things go, but sex isn't the only mature topic. It would probably surprise you at how mature today's kids are--I'm pretty sure they can handle any topic that might get brought up here in a mature fashion. And if they're just reading the Petopia forums for information about hunters and their pets, then the Off-Topic boards aren't the place they should be anyway. ;)

I knew I should have locked this thread before I went to bed! <-- joke

I am going to lock it now - just briefly! - while I catch up. This is not something I would normally do - it's a little self-serving - but I have a lot to read and respond to, plus I need to do some moderating here, and I can't do that while people are responding.

...

Edit: Unlocked! And that, my friends, is what I call heavy moderation. :D Note that I also deleted a couple of posts that either had no content after an author edit, or had no content after my edits.

i think ill throw in my 2 copper if it is safe xD

I think alot of people have made good points.

I love the fourms as much as everyone else,i like many, dont like seeing bombs and gernades being thrown because someone doesnt agree with something or doesnt like it. For a while this place was a warzone * iscert bomb noises here* and it was sad so see such a wonderful place going haywire.
I know veph and kalli where trying there hardest, and i can understand people being upset because there post was all of the sudden edited or just gone. I think the idea of, lets says someones post needs to be deleted or edited, for what ever reason, they should be notified through PM so they know and its not like --> " HEY guess what i edited/delted so and so's post cause of this!" --> i think it would be alot nicer and make alot of people happy to just see a pm saying, hey look sorry i had to edit/delete your post cause of this reason.
I know on the grinds my gear post alot of people got made cause it was supposed to be a mature post, and some people took offensce to stuff and what not, but i think like other said maybe its just of thing of the " Mature" tag should of been slapped on the title from the dead beggining of the thread, and maybe more clear rules on what can and cant be talked about so there is more " well it wasnt posted" or " you never said i couldnt" type of thing.

I hate to see this place to become a war zone because alot of people members or "stalkers" .. that sounds bad lol but, they come because they are trying to find a place where they talk " hunter talk" get info, help and the like, and even get help with RL things, and to just let off steam.

Though it is nice mania is trying to get everything sorted out and make things better kudos to you mania. I hate to see the fourms a warzone.

So mature content is definitely a point of contention. ;)

For the record, I am not worried about the forums being shut down over mature content. (Eric says he will throw us off his server if he catches any whiff of mature content, but considering his extensive porn collection I am certain he is joking.) I would be concerned, however, if community members didn't feel that they could come here because of mature content.

The official forum rules don't say much about content, except for language, and while I often talk about inappropriate content I don't think it's at all clear what that means to anyone but me. So that's a huge one for me to sort out. I'll start a separate thread on that, I think.

(And thanks for the suggestions on spoiler and cut codes. I'll definitely take a look at those.)

...

I've been thinking more about the number of moderators we have here. I wasn't even sure we needed two, but I added a third because I'd been away so much. And then circumstances piled up and show me that even with three, plus me, everything can still end up dumped on one person ... or less, in fact.

One of the things I was thinking about while I read over this thread - and this is just rife speculation at this point - is the notion of moderators who can lock threads that get out of hand and flag them for attention by a senior mod or me when time permits. Of course, that might just make arguments boil up into other threads ... I really don't know. (Ironically, I know more about managing games than I do about managing game forums.)

...

It seems that Vephriel's explanation of the mod actions in the GMG thread really helped explain what happened. One thing I noticed while I was making edits in this thread is that the little reason-for-edit box is kind of small for explaining anything complicated. (It has lots of space, you just can't see more than 32 characters of your reason at a time.) For threads like this where I'd given you notice about what I was going to be modding for that's okay, and for small normal edits it works fine, but anything more complicated is probably going to take its own post.

That might be another reason to lock a thread when any moderation is taking place, so the moderator can have the time and space to explain not just what is being done, but - if it's necessary - what needs to be worked out and how temporary or official an action is.

*snort* I started the reply while the thread was locked, not realizing that there is a checkbox to lock a thread when you reply. Sorry about that! It's unlocked (again). And yes, I am embarrassed.

Ok there has been some hardcore editing here..So much so that alot of the post here don't make much sense. I'm totally lost to what was originally said here..I had to go over my own post several times before I figured out what I said.. I was only able to do this because I could remember most of what I posted. Mania: If you use a strike out and change the text to a white font that way it's harder for the edited out section to be read. This was also reflect that the post was edited and still allows users to see what it originally said.

I figured maybe you kept it locked because you had reached a final verdict or something. :D

So it sounds like maybe our rules need to be updated with what you consider too mature for the site (which you said you were making another thread for so we'll leave it at that)?

I think this is a good idea, perhaps with the person locking it leaving a post/note saying that they're locking/flagging the thread for you to take a look at.

though just a suggestion, if you did this i think if the Mod who locked it and flagged it for you or a senior mod explained why they are doing it for the time being (IE: getting out of hand) alot of people wouldnt be to mad because now they know and re not lost in the fog going .. umm what happened??

just my 2 copper xD

Also Vephriel did a good job when she locked the original rant thread. It boiled over into a new thread and she had to lock that one as well. After that everyone I guess got the message to calm down and wait for Mania (you) to come back.

I think the lower mods and senior mods thing would work well with the spoiler and cut codes idea. Like rum is to coke even.

Not trying to go on too much of a tangent here, but I think that Kalliope ought to be commended for how she handled the GMG thread after it exploded. All we've been hearing, directly or indirectly, (myself included included) about Kalliope's actions is about how she screwed up, is at fault, etc. Just wanted to throw that out there.

As for having a 'hierarchy' of mods, I'm on the fence simply because I am unsure how effective such a system would be, especially with one administrator.

When you put it that way, I'm not sure I really like a hierarchy either - but I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say you are unsure how effective it would be, especially with one administrator. Do you mean that everyone will end up waiting for me regardless?
