Loque names [Need help still xD]

Unread post by Vephriel »

Heh, it's probably presumptuous of me to assume so, but I'm going to be camping Loque pretty much all this weekend so I'm really hoping I'll find him. ^^

Anyways, I figure I may as well start brainstorming a name for him. Unlike my Skoll, who's name was perfect as-is, I don't think I'll keep Loque's original name.

It would be sort of nice to have a Norse name just to match my other spirit beast, but I'm open to suggestions. I did browse other Loque Naming threads first, but I didn't really catch any that I liked.

EDIT: I don't think I like the name I picked out in the end, so I'm back for more ideas. x) See page 2 for my updated post, hehe.

Ooh, NORSE names you say? You asked the right person! I have a list of pretty much all of the Norse gods and goddesses somewhere here, let me see what I can remember off the top of my head...

Name - Associations

Loki - Chaos, Trickery, Mischief
Skadi - Winter, Hunting, Mountains, Snow
Odin - (wednesday is called odnsdag in norwegian), Poetry, Creation, Knowledge, Royalty, Sacrifice, Valhalla, Life, Death, two wolves called Geri and Freki, two ravens called Munin and Hugin.
Thor - (Thursday is called Torsdag in norwegian), Lightning, Thunder, War
Freyr - Fertility
Freyja - (Friday is Fredag in norwegian), Beauty, Fertility, Nobility, Cats
Vali - Vengeance

Let me have a look for my list...

Edit: Forseti - Justice
Meili - Loveliness
Tyr - War, Tuesday (in norwegian tuesday is called tirsdag)
Ve and Vili - Creation
Eostre - Dawn
Gersemi - Beauty, Treasure, Precious
Frigg - Love, Foreknowledge
Nott - Night
Sandraudiga - 'she who dyes the sand red.'
Sol and Sunna - Sun, Sunday (obviously).
Syn - Refusal, Locked Doors, Court defense
Tanfana - Autumn
Vor - Wisdom, Care, Spring (Spring is called vår in norway, pronounced vor.)

Hope you find something you like!

Alrighty then! I actually used Skadi for my Loque, Tyr for my Devilsaur, Thor for Skoll, Odin for Arcturis, Loki for my Vargul Blighthound, Syn for the Kurken, and Gersemi for Aotona

Hahah I'm totally fascinated with Norse Mythology. Yes, I am indeed a dork, but who wants to be 'normal'?

I love it as well! ^_^ Probably why I adore the WotLK expansion so much. I like a lot of mythologies, they're all so fascinating.

Mhmm, when I first saw Northrend, I literally squealed. xD

Howling Fjord? I mean come on, that's SO blatantly based on ancient Norway.

Mhmm, all mythology is fascinating, I just feel more of an attraction to paganism, and old norse mythology in particular.

My the way, to anyone who believes otherwise, Paganism is NOT Satanism. I could easily debate about the conflict and eventual combination of paganism and christianity.

Hehe, no worries. xD

Do you happen to know any Norse names to do with winter/frost, or souls? Despite Loque being in the jungle, he looks like some sort of winter elemental to me. :) That or a creature that holds souls.

Something along those lines. x)

Honestly, those were my thoughts, and that is why I chose Skadi. She is the goddess of winter, associated with snow, and mountains.

Let me think about it....

Höðr (Hodr) is the norse god of Winter.

Can't think of anyone to do with souls, apart from Hel, the queen of Hel, the norse underworld. Sound familiar?

Yeah, I'm thinking I want to stick with masculine names since my Loque will be a boy. Skadi would be perfect were he a she. :3 They don't necessarily have to be mythology names either, just regular words that may mean those things.

No worries though, you've given me a lot of ideas. :D

Ah, okay then! Let me see...

Well, you could make a combination of words, Ice is Is in norwegian, Snow is snø, Winter is Vinter, Cold is Kaldt, Paw is Labb, Claw is Klo, Tooth is Tann, Avalanche is snøskred, frozen is fryset, snøstrom is snowstorm. I can't remember what Frost is in Norwegian.

Ah, those are all perfect! :D Thank you so much! *hugs* I think I'll put something together with them. ^^

I've been browsing some sites and just saw that Frer meant frost, though I have no idea if that's correct or not.

You're welcome! Glad I could help. ^^ It's handy to be able to speak Norwegian fluently.

Edit: Not as handy as Spanish though. xD

Nope, I don't think Frer means frost, I just remembered that Frost in norwegian is called Frost or Rim.

Hehe, I'll trust you then. xD

I got that from here:
http://www.northvegr.org/date.php

"Frost Moon: The word month is derived from the word for moon. Given the importance Northern Europeans placed on using the moon as a guide for time, I thought it appropriate to use the word moon in the month names instead of the word 'month.' The Old Norse name for this month was frermánuðr. Frer means frost so the direct translation of this month name would be Frost Month or Frost Moon. "

Ah, perhaps the word Frost comes from Old Norse Frer? I'm not sure, but there isn't a word called Frer in modern norwegian, so I doubt people would question you if you chose to use it. xD

Look forward to hearing all about the mighty tame 'n' name!

...

Yes, that was a very bad rhyme, and I agree it sounds cheesy, even for WoW. xD

Check out this site for a rather large collection of names for various cultures gods and goddesses, Norse included.
