The Wizard of Oz? No way it's too scary.Redith wrote:So there is a list of movies that just got put out warning parents not to let their kids see these kid movies. Tell me what YOU guys think lol
'The Wizard of Oz- Too scary
'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' -Too violent
'The Nightmare Before Christmas'-too scary
'The Labyrinth'-Sexuality, too violent
'The Princess Bride'-Too violent
'The Dark Crystal'-too scary
'The Neverending Story'--sexual themes
'Jumanji'-too scary too violent
'Hook'-Sexual themes, Pedofiles, violence
'Flight of the Navigator'-Too violent
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory... well, I don't think it's too violent, but I still didn't like that movie as a kid.
The Nightmare Before Christmas? D: I loved that movie as a kid, and I still do. I must've watched it over 10 times when I was four of five. I was a bit freaked out by parts but I still loved it.
The Labyrinth. Never watched, so... /shrug.
The Princess Bride. Too voilent? This was another of one of my most favorite movies when I was a kid, and I still love it. Allthough, I think really young kids shouldn't watch it, I didn't like the part where whats-his-face is getting the life sucked out of him.
The rest of these I never watched except Jumanji which I also loved, allthough there were some parts I didn't like as much.

I can personally attest to this. My father and stepmother were freakishly overprotective when it came to 'non-kid' movies and situations and such. I was not allowed to see ANY rated R movies until I was 17, period. Even some PG-13 things were forbidden. My stepmother grounded me for a week when I tried to tape a late-night showing of Fullmetal Alchemist because clearly I was taping animated porn. We couldn't have any video games in the house that were rated over 'E.' Hell, I had to sneak watching Pokemon because it was "too violent" and "supported fighting animals." Yeah. Crazy. I could go on, but...Senna-Umbreon wrote:I'm sorry, but that's just crap. ALL of those movies that I saw.. I saw when I was definitely under 12. Heck, I'm pretty sure I was under 10 when I saw them.Redith wrote:kids under 12
Here's the thing.. Kids do not need to be sheltered from things like this. Like Moon said.. It'll just makes things WORSE for the kids when they grow up and are exposed to that sorta thing daily.
The result? I was pretty much a bloody coward and completely naive in regards to anything sexual up until college, and it promptly resulted in a nearly terrifying set of lessons when I discovered how people acted in the "real world." Did not adjust well. Don't do that to your kids, please don't. I'm not saying 'shove sex in their faces and make them watch horrible gory scenes and learn fifty swears,' but don't overprotect them, because it really sucks when you suddenly discover that the world isn't anything like the sugar-coated perfectly ordered world you thought it was.
Also, as everyone else has said, a lot of sexual connotations that make perfect sense to us--as older, sexually mature beings--will fly RIGHT over a little kiddie's head. I wouldn't worry about that overly much.

Come on...15 years ago I was 10-11 and watched X-files with my older sister. I never was shocked.

I seem to have gone off on and started ranting. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that I disagree with the list and think people should stop treating their children like little helpless idiots who don't know what is good for them no matter how old they get. Baby your kids when they are babies and when they are sad, not for their entire lives.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is pretty shifty watching it back as a young adult, but I loved it as a kid!! It was absolutely fantastic and I would recommend both versions to anyone.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is my alltime favourite film. Of all time. I watched it when it came out at the cinema (I was 3 at the time), my mother says this: 'You cried more at Scar from the Lion King.' So if anything, using your rationale, kids shouldn't watch Disney films, since they're actually quite traumatizing in that respect. Jack Skellington was the inspiration for my imaginary friend when I was little too!
The Labyrinth? Again, SUCH an amazing tool for a kid with an active imagination. I can't remember the amount of times I took up contact juggling because I wanted to be just like the Goblin King...And the puppets! They were so creepily cute! Neverending Story? Falkor?! Are you absolutely freaking kidding me?
My father was a massive influence of my childhood (since my mother traveled a lot for work); and he'd always have his nose in a Dragonlance book, collecting Myth and Magic statuettes, and watching sci-fi/fantasy films on TV. I was raised in a house where imagination was just passed on from daddy to child. And I am completely grateful. My mind is filled with unicorns and dragons, and I couldn't be happier. =3
If anything, the crap they're spoonfeeding kids nowadays should be banned...Let kids be kids while they can, not bombard them with 'oh I wonder if Joey feels the same way about me' and 'mummy buy me a mobile now' mentality. This is the kind of PC rubbish that's ruining childhoods...And I'm not even that old! I definately agree with Cerah though, my father was there every step of the way, I never watched that stuff by myself, so if I was scared (which I never was), I wouldn't be alone.

Is it some fundamentalist religious group? (and remember, you can't spell fundamental without "mental")
Is it a professional medical association?
Is it a group with credentials in childhood psychology?
I think the list is horse crap.
Other than Princess bride, which in my opinion isn't really a children's film. Not because of anything offensive, but simply because most of the humor is too complicated for them or makes reference to topics they won't have come into contact with yet at an early age.
A bit of palindromic wisdom:
"Step on no pets!"
Casual player.. don't raid, don't PvP. Suffer from extreme altitis
I love pets - combat or non.

Sexuality and violence are a part of our world and I can guarantee that anyones child will have been exposed to more violence and sexuality if real life by the age of 6 or 7 than they would see in some silly movie.
The idea that we can "protect" and "shelter" our children from the real world is one of the things I find most disturbing about the world today.
Parents, it is your job to prepare you child for the world, and that means teaching them about everything... yes, everything.
Not just the fun and cute bits, but the cold and hard stuff to.
From my experience it is the children who are "sheltered" that have the most problems adjusting to society.
/end rant
Those are the 2 cents on the matter.

Re: No kids should watch these "Kids movies" ><
This reminds me of that women who wrote that article about hos Thomas the train was a bad show for kids because it promoted children thinking that fat men in suits are all bossy and that trains are slaves...
What we see as children is very different from what we see when we are adults, A child see's the story but an adults mind is in the gutter (innocents vs corrupted).
Heck, why isnt all the disney movies on the list? Hmm, the main character is always from a broken family, theres always an evil stepmother, they're VERY violent (just minus the blood&gore) Heck, Bambies mother dies, not to mention when spring hit and all the animals pair off to do the do.
But as kids do we really see that? or do we see the good guys beat the bad guys and everything has a happy ending?
The Dark crystal was fixed and the two races re-joined, the Goblin King was defeated and the baby saved, new friends where made. Charley got the Chocolate factory for doing a good deed, Peter pan remembered who he was and learned how to be a kid again, Flight of the Navigator-it was AWSOME! I cant say I was ever a fan of The nightmare before christmas, but it was more funny then scary.
TBH, that list is BS. Heck, everyday I watch the Bugs bunny and tweety show, as a kid it was funny, as an adult its highly violent, sexual themed, racist. But you know what? My Daughter will watch it with me when she's old wenough for TV.
Silent as night, silent as death, silent as your last breath
