Firewalls

Unread post by Moore »

So I'm tired of using a built in firewall, since the Windows one isn't currently letting me do quite as much nitpicking as I want too. I was wondering what are the better firewalls out there today? I haven't kept up on them as well as I should have so, throw whatever you got at me. D:

If you just need a basic firewall you can customize, then ZoneAlarm might suffice.

What I was wanting is like an in depth firewall that will actively show me ingoing and outgoing connections. Windows Firewall sort of does this, but in a rather clunky way. I'm not even sure if there are firewalls that will actively show you but I'll try out zonealarm.

You're talking about software firewalls then? Have you considered a dedicated appliance, like a Smoothwall? Great use of an old PC.

I've got bits and pieces of a few comps laying around, but I'd rather prefer software on the main machine rather than using an old PC since space is an issue D:

AVG has a built-in firewall that has never given me issues with anything.

Only ever gotten 1 trojan. And that was cause I hadn't scanned in a month or two.

Avast has a pretty good firewall, It also blocks alot of stuff online. It will block the connection so it never even reaches your hardrive.
I believe if you can believe out of nothing an explosion (big bang) happened then how far fetched can god be?

Which is pretty much the definition of a firewall. Advertising it with "It also block stuff!" won't help much. xD

But really, you're probably better off with a dedicated firewall-machine, as someone already pointed out. It wouldn't even have to be a powerful machine, just enough to run some slimmed down version of Linux and a terminal-based firewall.
