Well, not really. I was in the express line at the grocery store (10 items or less) and some lady in front of me had about 30 things of cat food. Instead of telling her to go to the NON express lane, the cashier sloooowly rang up her 30 cans of cat food. I waited about 15 minutes to buy a soda and a dvd. Really now. Hire non-dumbasses, please, retail stores!

So people don't think I'm dumb, this was the only express line open and the other lines had people with more stuff than cat-food lady.

That is quite true. I am not bashing retail clerks in general. As it was, there was NO ONE ELSE around except this lady (who had 'Shift Leader' on her nametag, btw, so she wasn't new) and the other non-express lane cashiers. Sure, she prolly figured it was okay to go ahead and take the lady cuz she was the boss but in the case of the customers, it is not okay. Express lanes exist for a reason. I too worked as a retail clerk until I got another job (which wasn't much better, I threw out my back) so I know how it is and how you HAVE to take people if your boss says you do. The boss, however, should KNOW that if someone with just 2 items is behind someone with a ton of items that they should take the person with 2 items first or send the customer not reading the express sign to another lane. When I worked retail, we were told to send people who tried to check out in the express lane with more than 20 items to a non express line, no matter what, or to say that we have to take the people with less items first since it IS an express lane meant for people with a small amount of items who just want to get out. If they got pissed and threw a tantrum, we would take them, but only then.

My store was a large chain store, so they prolly didn't give two shits if the customer was mad and didn't come back, there were always tons of other customers. I am not calling cashiers in particular stupid at all. Just this one. It literally seemed as if she were ringing up this woman very slowly just to piss me off. I don't get pissed easily, I usually keep my cool, but this time, I was almost rude to the cashier when I finally did get checked out. But like you said, I was thinking that maybe it wasn't her fault so I didn't say anything.

Rant over. Just do not like people who do this, unless there is a very good reason. And never bashing cashiers, ever, trust me. I was one.

Ok, sorry I misunderstood. I despise working retail like I do and had a very rough night last night myself. I am currently training a new 18 yr old guy as a cashier. My manager had me train him on express because its easiest for him to work with and he wont get overwhelmed easily. Well even though I'm standing right there I do have to explain stuff to him and show him various vegetable codes and the like. But these people.. Ugh I had about 15 or so customers being very rude to him and he was getting nervous and all flustered while I'm having to calm him down. Some lady practically calls him an idiot to his face and hes turning beet red because of embaressment. I felt so bad for him because everyones gotta learn sometime and I politely reminded her it was his first day and he has to learn things if even a bit slowly. Sorry if I snapped it was just ugh..

I to am a cashier, and sometimes its just easier to take the idiot who cant read the bloody "express" sign then have to deal with the costumer complaining to the managers that I told them to go to a different line-up and then I have to deal with the idiot managers that are SUPPOSE to help US enforce the rules but instead tell us how wrong we are to tell a customer to go to a different line up even though THEY came through the EXPRESS lane with more then the limit!

So...yeah, dealing with one or two disgruntled customers who had to wait for idiot customer who couldnt read the sign is still preferable to the headache of dealing with the idiot managers about it. It sucks.

A common saying in our store is: There is no greater example of stupidity then people shopping.

(they cannot read the signs, the prices, the lables on food, they leave thier shopping carts in the middle of the isles -blocking everyone else, they ask idiotic questions (ex. "Are those the red peppers that are on sale?" ..."No, the sign that says these are the red peppers that are on sale is just in the wrong spot...these red things are actually green peppers..."), They drop/knock over things and dont pick them up, they leave cold items on random shelves, an anyone wearing a store uniform is there to yell at, complain to, and treat like dirt, because if we are in a uniform we are not people, we are your bitches, we cannot possible be treated with any form of respect...)

a cashiers job is just to scan the purchases, bag em, and take the money. That is what that person comes to work to do to earn thier pay check...They are just a person trying to do thier job with as little grief as possible. Sadly...they are ofen treated as nothing more thien a customers glorified slave...

We are yelled at, spit on, hit, threatened, whined to as if everything is out fault...New flash it isnt. And complaining to us about the store we work for...fyi, it doesnt help! You really want something done about it, talk to the managers, THEY have to listen, thats why THEY are paid the big bucks. Managers dont care about what a costumer complained to us about, they think that if the costumer didnt want to talk to them about it, then its not worth their time.

OMG YES! THIS EXACTLY!! I have remarked to my boyfriend a few times (we work at the same store) that this is the way I feel and for the love of everything IN THIS WHOLE DAMN WORLD stop putting FULL HOT DELI CHICKENS(big whole chickens gotta stay hot or they go bad) above the uscan machines! People grab em decide they dont want them and dont tell me they dont so they stick em up there on the little shelf with the chips and then cover them with bags of chips to hide them! WHAT THE HELL PEOPLE!? Ugh..

I've had people call me idiot. I laughed in their face. I usually just got a mean look or a baffled look, like they couldn't figure out what the hell was so funny. I'd been working retail for 10 years. I'd heard it all by that point, and getting called an idiot just made me giggle. Training others is frustrating, but I usually can't deal with them and tell my boss to find someone else. I admit that I have a very short fuse when it comes to patience. I don't get pissed easily, but I do lose patience very easily. I get irritated if someone looks at me the wrong way.

Even worse, being Asian-american, getting called...unpleasant names...by certain types of people made it worse. I just laughed at them, again, and told them to go to another line if they didn't want me to ring them up. I have had racist dicks leave my line to check out with someone else, sadly. Sigh. The managers couldn't do anything either, even if the customer complained about me, because it was the CUSTOMER being a racist asshole, not me. I was just trying to do my job and getting insulted for no reason at all.

Best thing ever I had a customer say they wanted to bag their own groceries.. Mmmk thats fine but then he put a thing of eggs in there and dropped a gallon of milk on top of em crushed his eggs and yelled at me.. Excuse me wtf? - You did it.. NOT ME!

Yes, my boss told me it was perfectly within my rights to tell that customer to go to another line since he was making racist remarks and that I was not going to be punished for being fairly rude to him, since he was rude to me first for something I can't help. The same thing in my store with homosexual people. One of my dear friends is a lesbian, and a few people have seen her and her partner together and made rude remarks, but again, she was well within her own rights to defend herself, even if she was rude to the customers. My store was a pretty nice place, for the most, despite some of the asshats.

Milk is double bagged separate.Bread and other squishy things like eggs are bagged separate.Soap and other cleaning stuff is bagged separate.

I love all you other retail people. I actually got sent home early one day from Staples (Black Friday, eurgh), but not because the manager was mad at me, but because I was so stressed from this really bad customer mix-up with bad communication and forgot to call a manager over to come deal with it. I was practically crying.

I'm pretty upfront with all my managers though. I don't have an issue telling them that some customer got upset with me and took my name down. I explain the situation to them and I've never gotten in trouble or anything. I think my mangers at my grocery like me since I'm always trying to learn how to get better at my job (hoping to get promoted to cashier once I've put my time in), and I'm always trying to make sure I'm getting stuff done and working my butt off. Pisses me off that we have a courtesy clerk (fancy name for a bagger) who's been there for 2 years and is lazy as all fuck. I guess he's finally on his last legs, but I (and several other clerks) work my (our) asses off and he just lolligags everywhere and never gets off his damned phone.

That's another thing that irritates me. I won't say I've never used my phone while on the job, but it's usually only if I'm in a "i really don't give a shit about anything" mood or I really need an answer for something from my bf. I try really hard not to be on my phone at work though unless I'm on break, and yet, I see so many of the other employees on their phones ALL THE TIME. And I don't understand it. You're there to work and do your job, not goof off on your phone all day. What's even worse is that the managers do nothing about it.

As a side note to this; cashiers that don't count change at all, or even tell a customer what their change is. We have a cashier that does this at my store and it drives me nuts, then again, I personally think she should have never been promoted to cashier anyway since she practically has to be babysat through a transaction sometimes.
