Re: Random Pet Challenge [v3.0]

Unread post by Javelin »

So this morning I went to tame a purple firefly for myself.
Image
The Tame:The tame was very easy, but it can be a little complicated on lower levels, since there are a lot of mobs close to each other.
I named her Darling, just 'cause I liked it.
Skin, sound, etc.:At first I had to get used to it, since i'm not a big fan of bugs (expect spiders) but i liked this little flying thing being around.
The wings weren't as loud as i expected, if I don't pay attention to them, i can't even hear them.
Image
First i headed to The Molten Front for some daily quest. I was on BM spec, so the pet could keep aggro on mobs without any trouble even with Growl turned off. The 2 second stun was also useful, if my bullet reached the mob before the pet did.
Image
The next spet was PvE. I headed to Zul'Aman with a random pug, but this time my little Darling wasn't so successful. Even if she's ferocity, she don't have buffs or any other abbilities for helping the group, so my dps was lower than the usual. (But at least, due to her size, it's not easy to loose track on her.)
Image
Then I gave PvP a try, with more success, than before. The pet itself has nice dps and the stun is very helpful as well.
So in my opinion wasps are great solo and PvP pets, but the instances/raids are not the places for them.

Also, I want to try a random pet on my other hunter too :D

"Weel whit was supposed tae be an easy task fur catalogin' anither beats turned intae a cluster buck. Ah thooght tae myself, Ocyen it's only a wee orange turtle! Fa woods hae thooght Ah woods rin intae a mingin' Orc..."

Saltwater Snapjaw
Orange Turtle

Image

The Saltwater Snapjaw is one of 5 tamable models of Orange Turtles as of patch 4.2. One of them is a level 24 rare, Cranky Benj who is found in Hillsbrad Foothills (more about that later). Prior to Cataclysm he was found in Alterac Valley.

Another version, Aku'mai Snapjaw is a level 23-24 elite mob found in the Blackfathom Deeps instance.

The normal versions of this pet can be found in the Hinterlands (Saltwater Snapjaw 30-31) or Swamp of Sorrows (Sorrowmurk Snapjaw 50).

But you may say: "That's only 4 Ocyen, you said 5!" First off, I can count. Secondly, the other is a level 8-9 mob and is only tamable by Goblins in the Volcano in the starting areas, phasing out after Volcanoth. As I am a Dwarf and unable to visit these areas...to hell with the Child of Volcanoth (they don't retain fire breath anyways)!

The Tame: What was supposed to be an easy tame almost turned into a battle for survival quickly. Originally I was going for Cranky Benj (I like em rare)--knee deep in Horde territory, making it risky for us Alliance to get all the way over there unless you are flying mount ready. I was. Flying over the river splitting Hillsbrad I picked him up on the mini-map, landing to find another hunter...a Horde hunter, taming him.

What does a Dwarf do?

Well, there is the unwritten hunter code of not ganking a tame, but when I play I am fiercely dedicated to whatever faction I am currently siding on.

I blasted Cranky Benj into turtle soup.

Image

The Orc stopped, looked at me. I looked back. He brought forth his pet--a Crocolisk. I busted out Rhinox. A silent agreement had been reached; we were going to throw down. I flagged for PvP and waited for the incoming shot. The Crocolisk came first--it was on. The fight we raged most likely made Titans smile as they drank mead and said: "Holy hell look at them go!" While my Orc opponent was 2 levels higher; a combination of macros and swiftness won me the battle...just as his level 85 friend was flying in.

Thankfully I mounted up before he could launch an attack and blasted off towards the Hinterlands, losing my pursuer in the chase. The tame after that was quite easy, the only issue lower level hunters may have is the elite hostile turtle mob that patrols with the neutral Snapjaws.

Skin, Sounds, Etc.: After the tame, I was disappointed at how small Dewback (the name of my Snapjaw) became. As a dwarf I am used to things being huge. Ok, that's fine. I can deal. The skin only has one unique feature: the eyes. Other than that you're adventuring with a Mandarin Orange as a pet. At least he's quiet.

Image

Use: Forget using the Saltwater Snapjaw in PvP, you're better off killing a squirrel after you have /love it and using that as your combat pet. Instead, the Saltwater Snapjaw like any turtle is a perfect questing buddy for low to mid-range level hunters. His special pet ability is Shell Shield, which reduces his damage taken by 50% for 12 seconds (with a 1 min cooldown). He's not going to do a lot of damage, but he can at least tank mobs perfectly.

This also means that while he should not be your main pet in dungeons, he should be brought along just in case your tank rage quits or dies. Pop him out, hold mobs and use Intervene (Tenacity talent tree) to jump over and take damage for the healer if your druid/shammy/priest/paladin friend is getting a case of Uncle Bad-Touch.

Final Word: Sadly, Dewback is being released back into the wild. I already have a turtle (Ghamoo-ra, a placeholder until Terrorpene) and Dewback would be quickly forgotten in my stable. In my opinion, the turtle models should be bigger and with more variety otherwise many of them will never find a home (even if they are decent tanks).

Hit me again!

I went to Deadmines today. I did 4 runs, then I found the Ablino parrot (the white and yellow one). I tamed him and named him "LuckyCharm" to help me find my Brilliant Macaw, but so far no luck. I'm stubborn. This thing is evading me, I have to get it! I did 5 dungeons with LuckyCharm and my fiance helped me to run faster through the dungeon (it takes level 44 Nerdanel a few shots to kill everything, so he helped me as I was getting annoyed because of how long it took) - still no purple parrot *sigh* I'm continuing tomorrow!

@Ocyen: I LOVE your reports. They just make me smile every time I read them!

I know I COULD tame the bear, but this birdie makes me want to get him, the more he evades me :D I'll probably do the bear, too, when I find the time in Sweden, but it could take a while.

Thanks! My second one was way more interesting because it was not a creature I already had stabled and had to actually go get. Hopefully yhr next one is a unique creature of some sort.

I tamed the Brilliant Macaw and even saw him three more times in my search for the Albino Eyegouger. /sob

I'll trade you!

Deth'tilac. To tame: Kite, kite, kite! That is the biggest thing with this tame. Also, rezzing and saccing your pet to lower his health (if you don't have any help) will work wonders. When I tamed Deth, I did it ALONE and didn't know about the pet sacrifice thing, so I kited my damn purple spider around for 45 minutes before finally getting him low enough to tame. It was a long haul, but I eventually got it. Here's two pics of Deth just hanging out:

Image

Image

Nice backshot of Cyric's flaming purple ass:

Image

Dead spider in the water pic, and a swimming pic. He has the usual spider animations in water. He's all like "GET ME THE EFF OUT OF HERE!!!":

Image

Image

Combat shot. He webs his enemies and roots them in place, which is great:

Image

Cyric and Sara, in front of the Hyjal fire portal:

Image

All in all, I love Deth'tilac. He isn't my FAVORITE pet, but he is certainly the most unique pet I have. He is well worth taming if you find him. He does decent dps, but he still isn't as good as Ferocity pets like Skarr or Skoll. His web ability is very useful in both pve and pvp, and almost makes up for his slight inability to hold aggro as well as his fellow pets.

My challange was the brown lynx.

I found her in the ghostlands. The tame was not so hard as i was already lvl 50.

I named her Kamala, i liked her after i tamed her which i found funny as i tend to like the red one more. She has lovely yellow eyes, which i didn't realy notice before.

As for combat she fights like most other cats and uses the same idle as all cats do now, though she seems to be a bit less loud, but i might just imagine that.

Swimming looks ok, like most other cats, so nothing special.

I am not sure if i will keep her long, but i will keep her a bit longer as she seem to grow on me. It will probably depend on the amount of cats i collect which stays.

I would like a reroll please

Gondria. Found her wandering in Zul'drak easily the first time I looked in WOTLK. Here's a pic of her pre-name change and post name change, also a picture of Gondria pre-tame in the wild. She's neutral and doesn't aggro anyone and drops mediocre loot for lvl 77ish characters. I have found her in this particular spot at least 4 times already:

Image

Image

Image

Kitty paddling in the water. Poor kitty doesn't like swimming:

Image

Gondria hanging out in Orgrimmar, a top shot. She's very see-through:

Image

Khaleesi and Sara, sitting in Org. Gondria giving a kitty-yawn:

Image

I love Gondria. She's a very pretty pet and at the time she came out she was very unique. I almost prefer her translucent purple model to the clone-models of Ankha and Magria. They're more visible, but Gondria seems much more of a "spirit beast" because she is so ghostly. She was an easy tame at the time I tamed her. I just dropped an ice trap, trapped her, and tamed her with no problems. She's ferocity so does great dps and holds aggro really well, like all spirit beasts. Tame her if you're BM! On my server, she's up nearly every day and I have rehomed at least 10 Gondrias. She has around 5 spawn points but seems to prefer the one by Harkoa's children or the one by the steps in the troll area.

Would like to edit to say possibly releasing Terrorpene, so please don't roll me him. I do not like, nor use this pet. I'll take a few SSs just in case you really want pics of Terrorpene, but I dislike this pet and would rather tame a pet I do like in exchange for getting rid of the shitty fire turtle.

"Puir blighted bastards, that's aw ah can say fur th' bears ay Northrend. In thes adventure ah maunt tae sae a body ay them; but reports trickled in abit anither prowlin' th' moontains nestled atween Silervpine an' Tirisfal Glades. Ah contacted mah mukker Rayven, ah woods need tae hae some protection fur thes investigation an' whit we discovered was naethin' we expected..."

Rabid Grizzly
Diseased White Bear

Image

A staple for undead hunters seeking a tanking pet, the Diseased White Bear has a little bit of interesting history behind it.

The first tamable mob of these gnarled looking bears can be found in Dragonblight, the level range between 71-72. Common enough if you do the quests around the area.

It's the Tirisfal Bear of Tirisfal Glades that is a really bizarre specimen. While not a rare, it has a long respawn timer, and it's level range is between 80-84. Keep in mind, Tirisfal Glades is basically the starting zone for the Forsaken. As I am only level 71 I decided to log on my rogue and do some investigating and what I found was mind = blown.

Along the walk path of this bear (level 81 at the time before I killed and skinned him) there was a ring of mushrooms surrounded by...Faerie Dragons? Level 81...Fey-Drunk Darters to be exact. What happens next has to be seen to be believed.

Image

The Darters take up position around the mushroom circle and the music changes, it is heard nowhere else in Azeroth as they bathe the circle in light and musical notes and the corrupted deer nearby stand and watch. After some poking around I discovered this event event happens every 6 hours; so if you're out taming the Tirisfal Bear; make sure to stop by here and you may be in for a treat.

Thus far, no rhyme or reason in-game has been given for this event; making it even more special. Screenshots do this no justice, so instead have a video!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPQXpOHwWag

The Tame: Back to the bear, the Diseased White version was a hell of an easy catch. No trap needed, just ran up and woo'd the big bastard. Seriously, after the Faerie Dragon event everything was sort of muted for awhile. Basically, any hunter of level can grab this bear with no troubles (even with the many mobs patrolling the zone). This particular one I tamed was named Scarhide (for obvious reasons).

Skin, Sounds, Etc: By the time you are level 71, if you wanted a ragged looking bear you probably already managed to get a lower level one from areas like Western Plaguelands. Really, there's not too much variation between the diseased skins in terms of color. Sounds are shared with all bears' quiet while idle but can be quite noisy with constant growls in combat.

Image

Use: The Rabid Grizzly is a Tenacity pet, meaning he's great for solo questing. Make no mistake though, his special attack has use in both instances and PvP. Demoralizing Roar reduces physical damage caused by all enemies within 8 yards by 10% for 15 sec. This means in raids your tank is taking less damage and in PvP you are taking less damage.

Bears are also one of the few families of pets that have a bonus ability, this one being Rest. Before Pet happiness was nerfed, it would cause your bear to drift into a slumber for a few moments and restore some happiness...now it just...takes a nap? Yeah, that's about it.

Image

Final Word: Another successful adventure, this one with a pleasant surprise. Too bad I really have no use for Scarhide at this time and he will be released back into the wilds; maybe with the strange little Faerie Dragons.

Ready for a 4th run, hook it up!

Would like to add that I FINALLY tamed an Albino Eyegouger and have officially dropped Terrorpene. I did a pic-taking montage of Terrorpene prior to releasing him, though, if anyone wants to see alot of pics of an ugly-ass fire turtle. In a semi-review, I will say he was a great tanking pet and looks the part of a tank, and for people around lvl 81 that want a unique, rare, tanking pet, if you find him, get a priest to bubble you, then tame him! He's def worth it at low levels before you can tame the spirit beasts and Karkin/Madexx for your Tenacity pets.
