Pets in WoW Classic

Unread post by jarac »

Hi all, i am new to this forum. I was discousing with my friend about pets in WoW Classic. Since i played Vanila for short period i dont know much about pets in that time. I heard only that back then elite pets were different. Have attack speed under 2.0, brooken tooth have 1.0 if i am not wrong. Than there is elite Rak'shiri who has some special abilities only because its elite, when tamed ? Can anyone explain to me how that worked in WoW classic, and is attack speed only diference between normal and elite / rare pets, and is that only for cats or other families as well ????

Thx

I dont recall anything about elites being different than non-elites though.

I do know that pet speed was a factor at first, I think there was a Raptor that was the fastest running pet (maybe Takk?). Broken tooth was one of the fastest attack-speed pets back in the day making him sought after to help disrupt casters in pvp etc.

Either way, none of this matters anymore. All pets of a family will have the same abilities / stats with any other pet in that family (eg Rakshiri will have the same stats as a regular Panther).

yes i know that from tbc all are the same, but i asking this because my friend and i have that little discuasion about pets in WoW Classic. So i wanna see whats true. I played Vanila only for short period of time so i dont know all things... I know that attack speed is different but i dont know if stats are better if tamed pet was elite beast and maybe there is some special abilities that only elite beasts posses and they stay when tamed.... Example is Rak'shiri, i do remember evryone wanted him but dont know why and are there "special" pets in Cats family only or there was in others too ???

Back in vanilla many pets had "special abilities" but it had nothing to do with being elite or rare though rare mobs were more likely to be affected. Some common mobs had it too.

Examples:
(Common) Frost wolves in... Alterac Valley BG I think? They ran at 255% speed and could catch players on epic ground mounts.
(Rare) Mazzranache the tallstrider, had the slowest run speed. It ran so slowly that in PVP a player walking away from it could outwalk it.
(Rare) Broken Tooth as you noted had a 1.0 attack speed. Opposite that you had bears (I don't remember which one was the slowest) that had a 2.5 or 2.55 attack speed.
(Rare) Lupos the wolf attacked with shadow damage instead of physical damage. In PVE it usually lowered his dps but in PVP it meant it went right through armor.
(Rare) Snarler the wolf had, I believe, had 100 resist to all schools of magic.

There's others but I can only remember the ones that I tamed/wanted to tame.

Wassa , great post about attack speeds of pets...

peanutbuttercup , for some of this "sepcial" abilities i heard but for most i didnt, nice...

Takk that was mentioned by Royi is also fast pet....

Since i think we have complete list of attack speed i wanna hear more about those "special abilities" , for example wolf that has 100 resist on all schools of magic thats so great, i wanna hear more

Btw i think Rak'shiri was all wanted pet because of some of this special abilities , but i dont know which exactly it is...

Here is also what I remember from Vanilla.

~Lupos did shadow damage on melee attacks instead of physical damage.
~Snarler had 100 of each resist.
~Fire Rocs had 115 fire resist.
~Searing Rocs had 240 fire resist.
~Frostwolves, Longtooth Runners, Takk the Leaper, and King Bangalash had fast pursuit speeds and could chase down epic mounts.
~Durotar Tigers, Snow Leopards, and Mazzranache were very slow runners.
~Gretheer, a rare spider in Silithus, used to have the model and skin of a tallstrider, which was awesome.
~Most pets with mana bars in the wild had "caster stats" and where weaker than most other pets. Wind serpents, dragonhawks, and a few named spiders where infamous for this. (Also in BC)
~Silithid Protector, a now retired crab pet, used to do an emote when summoned that was removed rather quickly once that was discovered.
~Arikara would be summoned in a poof of smoke.
~Gezzarak also had a lightning bolt animation when summoned. (BC)

I don't remember hunters really wanting Rak'shiri for any certain reason other than he had a unique looking skin.

In the first open beta elite pets kept their dragon and higher stats, but that was fixed before launch I believe.

Plus some of these Speed and attack traits would be able to be trained to the pet you wanted to keep as a main. I remember if I wanted a pet to have a special attack; I would have to go out and tame said pet and run around with it for awhile till I had learned it's special ability.. Then I could train my main with it's ability.. Plus early on some would keep their silverdragon crest.. and some like The Beast from BWL would keep their boss skull tag..

They had the tame and train thing towards the second half of Vanilla IIRC. But it only worked for certain base type skills like Bite, Claw, Dash. I vaguely remember that the top rank of Bite had to be learned by taming worgs in LBRS, leveling them until you learned it, and then it could be taught to other pets. It was really frustrating as it meant you had to waste a pet slot just to tame different pets for their abilities. The oddball abilites like 255% run speed or 1.0 attack or shadow damage could not be learned or taught. Actually by that point they'd started to normalize pets a little and removed many of the special one off features that certain pets had.
