Game of Thrones

Unread post by Nili »

Right so I finished watching the 10th episode this week and haven't been able to get it out of my head. It's driving me nuts. I'm tempted to name my pets after the characters.. I even ordered the first three books on Amazon and they should arrive any day now. I think I may read them while I camp some pets hehe.

Anyone else obsessed over this show, series, books?
Am I the only one who cried when Drogo died? :(

I think I need to bounce ideas, theories, and character obsessions around with others here.. maybe that will help..perhaps..?

I really like the theme, acting, sets & atmosphere, music etc, but I'm really tempted to stop watching it simply because of how depressing it is : /

I keep waiting for it to turn around, for the magical "AND WE ARE SAVED" event but it seems to just keep getting more dismal :(

Books yes, though I read the last one some 10 years ago... haven't watched the series yet but my niece was just pitching it to me and it sounded pretty sweet, so I'm planning on renting it.

I haven't been watching the show, as I do not have HBO, but I love the books and am re-reading them (halfway through the 4th) in anticipation of the 5th book coming out next month.

I think it is a great idea for a naming theme! When the books arrive, you'll see that they all have an appendix that lists all the characters (cast of thousands!), which should come in handy.

@Acherontia: No, it's not going to have a Hollywood ending.

@GormanGhaste
Your name! My husband reckoned I should try your namesake's book as well. I've been caught up in Harry Potter, True Blood, fandom books for god knows how long. I think it's time to bury my nose in some medieval fantasy novels.

Also grabbed a spider this morning, his name shall be Joffrey! Think I may name Loque Cercei :D

Good that it doesn't have a hollywood ending, I'm in the mood for something dark and unpredictable! :3

The funny thing is, I first heard about the Peake novels from an essay on the history of fantasy that was included in a Game of Thrones RPG book, for some reason. :) I definitely recommend the first two Gormenghast novels, but the third (and soon to be published fourth) was published posthumously and written by someone else from his notes.

A Song of Ice and Fire is one of my favourite novel series of all time. :) The books are simply amazing and I've yet to find any others that reach such a caliber.

I'm thoroughly impressed by the HBO show. I was extremely hesitant when I heard that they were making one (considering the travesty that happened to the Sword of Truth novels and their recent TV adaptation), but this one is really well done, I've enjoyed it immensely.

My boyfriend loved the show as well, which I was thrilled about since he's not big on reading huge fantasy books and I'd always rave about how good these ones were. Now I can finally share them with him in a form.

Sad to hear that--not that it's not "Hollywood" but that it won't be somewhat uplifting. I usually watch stuff to unwind and relax, but it seems like the current cool thing to have everything end really sadly. I stopped watching Doctor Who & Torchwood for the same reasons :( I like content that makes you think, and I don't demand ridiculous perfect endings, but the level of "sad" in this show really brings me down!!

My only other gripe with the show is that there's so many characters, and a lot of them are similar in appearance--I know it's down to the setting & culture of the area, and I don't know if it's the same of the books, but I always find myself asking my husband "who is this guy, again?!" I mention this because I'm curious, anyone else have issues keeping the chars apart?

That said, I don't know if I CAN stop watching--it is just that well-done. It really pulls you in, the story & the setting both, and the characters are very well-done.

I would like to hope that the book series will eventually build to a satisfactory conclusion, but only 4 books have been published so far. A fifth one is coming out next month, but I think the series will run to at least seven books. And Martin is notorious for taking a long time to write books!

As to character confusion, I haven't been watching the show, but even reading the books it can be confusing. :)

I got the first three books on Saturday. 108 pages into the first book so far. I could be done with the first book in two days if I didn't have real life priorities ! :P There's no character index from the looks of it, they're only paper back. Ah well, I'll just pick some that I like :)

Off to read some more, I am loving the Dany chapters the most lol

That's strange. My paperbacks have the appendix, but maybe they left them out of the newer editions? And they aren't an actual alphabetical index, but listings of characters organized by House. Also, if your books have a preview chapter of the next book in the series, the appendix is actually Before that.
